- Topher06, on 04/26/2008, -5/+155This is news, a fashion designer being an *****?
- filosofix, on 04/26/2008, -9/+137Those french fashion houses and their designers make me sick. They probably think the starving kids look as "healthy" as their models.
- seananderson, on 04/26/2008, -11/+114Louis Vuitton is a no-talent prick who just happened to get lucky that his cheap, ugly, desktop-wallpaper pattern got popular. I don't know how anyone can shell out so much money on an original LV when there are 100 times as many people carrying 100% identical imitations around.
- twiztidsinz, on 04/26/2008, -7/+66LV is french.... they'll surrender in a few days.
- mattgilberg, on 04/26/2008, -4/+51But hey, look on the brightside. If this goes to court, the U.S. government will have actually spent money on Darfur.
- OneOfNone, on 04/26/2008, -16/+62Wow. After reading the article, I have a suggestion: next time you see someone with LV merchandise, even fake, react as if s/he is wearing a piece of roadkill. Step aside in disgust, pretend to puke. If asked, explain why. Let's see how's that for PR.
- inactive, on 04/26/2008, -5/+43Suing... for copyright infringement... for using an image that resembles their product? Wow - and why isn't everybody else suing for silhouettes of recognizable shapes resembling their products on shirts and such?
"You see, judge, this thief stole our design by drawing something close to it on her t-shirt. No, she isn't producing cheap knock-off products and underselling us, but she is drawing our bag!!!"
She should counter-sue Vuitton for downloading her design from the internet without her explicit permission, subpoena all their IT equipment, and demand $250,000 for each unauthorized copy of her picture found on their machines. Just as absolutely irrelevant and ridiculous.
Intellectual Property laws protect no creativity; only the greed of dinosaurs who can afford to enforce it. - pradaaddict, on 04/26/2008, -5/+39Louis Vuitton is dead you asshat.
- pederg, on 04/26/2008, -8/+41I don't think that this is much about LV suing for the sake of doing it, i think they have to for future protection. It's kinda how apple filed against NYC for their "Green" logo.. It's so the court can't say in the future "But why didn't you sue last time someone came close to your logo".. LV will hand in the papers even if it is ridiculous and they would loose, but it is to be safe..
- Daniel591992, on 04/26/2008, -3/+35How pathetic.
- reeder, on 04/26/2008, -2/+32It makes sense. The people who can afford the bags are the same people who most directly benefit from the Darfur genocide.
- smokeydbear, on 04/26/2008, -1/+21That's Keith Richards ... he's supposed to look like that.
- sliksta, on 04/26/2008, -5/+24Sickening and shameful. Some people have no morals at all, none. This is what happens when 'intellectual property' goes too far. And I mean wayyyy too far.
- ivankraszl, on 04/26/2008, -0/+17Who is going to sue Saatchi & Saatchi for this ad?
http://adsoftheworld.com/media/print/cordaid_handb ...
Ah, smart guys removed the branding! ;) - unpolloloco, on 04/26/2008, -6/+23It's not a vuitton - it resembles one. Big difference there.
Furthermore, I'd make an argument for fair use - that campaign is making a satirical statement, not infringing on a trademark - mattgilberg, on 04/26/2008, -7/+20you dick. you're just like the company. i mean, look at your ***** nickname. "pradaaddict"
- apophenic, on 04/26/2008, -3/+16Yes, let's act like PETA, because everyone takes them seriously.
- StaticThunder, on 04/26/2008, -0/+13Thats patents and trademarks, not copyrights. You don't lose a copyright for not enforcing it. The copyright is just that, a right to control copies. Louis Vi-whatever can let them do whatever they want, or sue them, as he sees fit and is in no danger of losing any IP.
- uhhNo, on 04/26/2008, -5/+17http://louisvuitton.com/web/index.jsp
this guy certainly does not look healthy - JimmyDushku, on 04/26/2008, -1/+13LV has sued many people and organizations for the most frivolous things. I believe they recently tried to sue Britney Spears because she was displaying one of their bags and they didn't want her to tarnish their image.
- dunderballer, on 04/26/2008, -0/+10This is great. The lawsuit will bring more attention to Nadia Plesner's message than she could have dreamed of and hopefully will have no success in seeking compensation. LV and the materialism it depends on will take a hit.
- EdgarVerona, on 04/26/2008, -2/+12Meh, I could care less.
Message me when he's UNdead. I'll digg that. - inactive, on 04/26/2008, -1/+10Let them know what you think:
https://wws.louisvuitton.com/web/html/yourquestion ... - awills, on 04/26/2008, -1/+9She has done nothing with their property, and they are losing nothing because of her actions. What are you even talking about?
- Bleeding_Heart, on 04/26/2008, -0/+8I think what is clear is people love the tshirt/badge/wrist band etc that associates them with a cause and makes them look caring and deep.
They could donate the entire cost of the item to victims, but then how would other people know and praise them for it.
Nadia (or rather the quote used here) says she started this to take a shot at big media rather than to help anyone, I'm sure she will help someone and thats great but I doubt thats her main concern. - giveer, on 04/26/2008, -5/+13If your point was as valid as you think it is, you wouldn't need to mention its validity.
So, you can't hack the dark realities of the human race rubbing shoulders with your prancing along the Boardwalk. Welcome to Earth *****. - Risingashes, on 04/26/2008, -1/+8I personally don't have any desire to own custom plates or bags or whatnot.
The desire to be rich and the desire to be perceived as 'in the know' are completely separate desires. - arcticblue, on 04/26/2008, -1/+8The submitter wants us to think this is "tech news".
- mitrovarr, on 04/26/2008, -0/+7Shouldn't this be protected under Fair Use? It's obviously parody and should be protected as such.
- giveer, on 04/26/2008, -4/+11@pradaaddict
"If they are to die, they better do it and decrease the surplus population" - Ebeneezer Scrooge.
You should give a ***** only because you're a member of the human race - and I don't care who you are, you won't take your last breath on Earth and say, "At least I spent all that time working in the office for myself." If your attitude is anything other than a digg-show, I will sleep more comfortably tonight knowing that I don't know you. Your heart is Ugly and I feel sorry for you. Mostly because you won't understand why. Enjoy that life of yours. - JosephShell, on 04/26/2008, -0/+7Will someone please hack these guys?
Perhaps turning their url into the picture for a bit will be a good thing.
Let them know it can happen again. - disinfect, on 04/26/2008, -0/+6That's understandable though. I mean, britney spears...
- inactive, on 04/26/2008, -0/+6Let them know what you think:
https://wws.louisvuitton.com/web/html/yourquestion ... - inactive, on 04/26/2008, -5/+11Problem #4132789034897 with the copyright system...
- pradaaddict, on 04/26/2008, -3/+9it's not going too far. That image is in the likeness is a trademark design and is being used to make a political statement that the company may or may not agree with. They are well within their legal and ethical rights to sue.
- UltraDavid, on 04/26/2008, -1/+7There's protecting your mark, and then there's being a huge douche about things. Vuitton didn't have to ask for ridiculous damages, it could have just asked her to stop.
- Herolint, on 04/26/2008, -1/+7What does that mean, "asshat"? Is it a hat that resembles a fashionable fundament, or is it a hat that you wear on your ass to keep the sun out of your crack?
Either way, I want one. - Lagstorm, on 04/26/2008, -3/+9lol.....digg me down but that is funny.
- inactive, on 04/26/2008, -0/+5It's a trademark. They could still grant a license to use the trademark, however, and still maintain their rights (this is how the Linux trademark works)
- Zyphon, on 04/26/2008, -1/+6Oatmeal. That is all.
- NewSc2, on 04/26/2008, -0/+5Remember, Louis Vuitton is owned by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy). Their brands include Louis Vuitton, Moet, Hennessy, Glenmorangie, Sephora, Fendi, Kenzo, Veuve Clicquot, Krug, Belvedere (vodka), TAG Heuer, and many others.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lvmh - unpolloloco, on 04/26/2008, -3/+8There lies the problem. It is a political statement, not a trademark infringement. It should be protected free speech as satire.
- mattgilberg, on 04/26/2008, -1/+6Nadia Plesner talks about brands becoming apart of art. I don't believe anyone was sued over this...http://www.jssgallery.org/Other_Artists/Andy_Warho ...
- FamilyGuy, on 04/26/2008, -1/+6What I think is humorous is that this person is just now getting sued when there are have been SO MANY LOOK ALIKES all OVER the place! Why now?! Everyone else is making a ton of money off of the look alikes, why sue the person who's trying to raise money for a good cause!? What a bunch of money-hungry pricks.
- Razormane11, on 04/26/2008, -0/+4Even if LV is claiming infringement on their designs, I think it is pretty obvious that the use of the work would fall under some sort of criticism from the fair use act. Furthermore the notion made by LV that the people who buy this crap in the first place are now going to stop buying it from an awareness fund-raiser like this is almost laughable.
***** why doesn't LV help this woman. Do a different design or something and help raise awareness. Then donate the money they would waste on litigation. Oh that's right they don't really give a *****. I realize LV doing a design for it kinda defeats the purpose in the first place but like I said before, people buying it already are not stopping from this picture. - ritter99, on 04/26/2008, -0/+4fundraising ... pfff ... all the problems in this world could be fixed in a week, or maybe a month. but nobody wants them to be fixed. specially not by a noname student .... wake up people, we're going down.
- celotil, on 04/26/2008, -0/+4Hear ya. I've been looking for a nice, small set of luggage for those occasions when I travel and naturally I started looking over the more expensive brands, presuming - with skepticism - that I'd be able to find a nice set of luggage that was made of leather, understated in appearance with perhaps the brand name being small and hard to see - so as to not be showing off -, preferably black or charcoal.
I wanted a duffle-style bag with U-shaped top opening and end pockets, a tri-fold garment bag that held 3 to 4 outfits - jacket, pants, shirt, maybe a small toiletry bag as well and a pair of shoes -, and a briefcase-style laptop bag to suit a 17" MBP.
What I found in most of the big name brands from well-known fashion designers was tacky, overpriced garbage. I can't believe what passes for "fashionable" today. Nearing the end of my search I wondered if I could call myself Cel `Otel and sell polished dog *****, with a ribbon. - localzuk, on 04/26/2008, -2/+6Huh? How did they? They drew a bag which was similar in design to LV stuff. LV does not have a copyright on 'similar' designs, they also don't have the right to prevent someone using their name in the way it is being used (ie. 'LV are trying to stop my campaign!'), and they don't have any rights what so ever to demand any money for a copy of a letter being on a website!
Sorry but LV's understanding of EU copyright legislation is weak to say the least. Not to mention how cold-hearted it makes them look. -
