- comrademikhail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Hey, what's with the swastikas? Or are those peace symbols?"
"Buddhism has no reference in the story, even more so has nothing to do with swastikas. So why link to it?
The emoticon is for Shuri-kens, that's all."
Straight from the article itself:
"*Please note that this mark is not a Nazis swastika;the outer spokes rotate in the opposite direction, anti-clockwise. The version above, ( a Juumanji) has a long tradition (greatly predating the Nazis) of being used as symbol to represent Buddhist temples in Japan, and it is now used on maps for that purpose." - pupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> Buddhism has no reference in the story, even more so has nothing to do with swastikas. So why link to it?
Wrong. Swastikas have been used for hundreds of years by Hindus and Buddhists. The fact that you can't display a swastika in public now has more to do with intolerance and misunderstanding of Eastern culteres than anything else. - GlassMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet the japanese have plenty of dirty emoticons, they just don't publish them on a site because they are polite.
plus theres a reason they don't have as much an appreciation for boobs, if you think about it. - panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article says the (^_^) is two bytes and :-) is one byte. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldnt that be 5 and 3 bytes. Stupid article..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow i've been looking for this!!

- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just before anyone thinks my swastika comments are too much, I want to be perfectly clear. I am Jewish, and any "real" swastika stuff, Nazi connotations, make me sick. I just wanted to point out some history.
- Nightkidz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is pretty interesting to know...!!!

- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0(o|o)
ULTRAMAN!
The article was worth it simply for that one.
But in all honestly, I use a combination of Eastern and Western smileys. . .
Tis just easier, the western ones: XD :p and more
the eastern ones: ^^ o_O -.-;; and more
If you ask me, its more a matter of vertical vs horizontal, because when using smileys, they're simply a matter of convenience. - MattZed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice.. dugg

Does it display correctly? Some might need to download the Language pack, or the IME to see it on WinXP English Ed. (Although I think Microsoft should have included it by default... >_> ) - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WTF shaddup about swastikas, they're shurikens.
Sweet article. I've seen a lot of those emoticons while playing Counter Strike. Never realized they were 1337 aZn versions of emoticons. - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Weird, whether a happy or sad face the mouth never changes, just the eyes change.

- noodhoog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Panic: "The article says the (^_^) is two bytes and :-) is one byte. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldnt that be 5 and 3 bytes. Stupid article.."
You're wrong.
The article is referring to the fact that some of the japanese style emoticons use characters that are two bytes each (i.e. the extended japanese unicode symbols), whereas our western style ones use single byte (ASCII) characters. - GreatChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, 'asking for favor' is usually used for 'I bow to your superiority' more.
Funny that list... most of us asians don't even bother with the brackets. _> - YoshoKatana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ack! That "ga" was written in katakana. It should be hirugana. I apologize again!!
