- moofree, on 06/19/2009, -0/+34Lick your screen just in case.
- inactive, on 06/19/2009, -0/+18120Hz is the least common multiple of 24/30/60 Hz. When a 24 fps movie is displayed on a 60 Hz display, the playback stutters somewhat as frames are being repeated at an uneven rate (3:2 pulldown or something), it's especially noticeable on interlaced sets. When displayed on a 120Hz display, each frame of a 24fps film is displayed 5 times in a row without any jitter. Likewise 30fps content will display the same frame exactly 4 times in a row and 60fps content twice.
- aaron117, on 06/19/2009, -6/+22Thought this said "LSD price drop".
- WOMPA, on 06/19/2009, -1/+17Plasma may be replaced by a superior technology, just as CRTs are being replaced now, but the comparison to LaserDisc and Betamax does not make any sense. There isn't going to be a competing format of programming delivery that will immediately obsolete my plasma any more than your LCD. Nor is there some kind of "format war" going on that will one day force all consumers one way or another. Your comment would be much more accurate if it said HD-DVD is the Betamax of our generation....because it is. Plasma is just a revolutionary technology that is being replaced by other revolutionary technologies. It's called progress.
- Qays, on 06/19/2009, -1/+14I can't wait til OLED TVs come out
- cjflashman, on 06/19/2009, -6/+17Dude, you can pick up a 19-inch 1680x1050 LCD from NewEgg for around 150.
And here I have a 15 inch 1024x768 LCD right next to it from NewEgg, six years before.
The colors on the new one? better.
The contrast on the new one? better
The brightness on the new one? better
The price on the new one? one fourth of the other one.
I remember when a stick of PC100 512MB was a good $75...
I love Moore's law. - synapz, on 06/19/2009, -4/+15Technology advancement in a free market reduces the prices of goods through the improvement of production techniques.
Inflation by the central government destroys the price benefits of improved production techniques.
The faster the inflation, the less the benefit, and they are inflating like mad right now.
End the Fed. - shadus, on 06/19/2009, -1/+10Plasma is nice, but LCDs have done a great job catching up and use far less energy and look just as good on the high end. There were some very nice pioneer and panasonic plasmas available and they came a long way from where they started too, just not nearly as far as the LCDs have come.
- Mavital, on 06/19/2009, -1/+9@shadus: I completely agree that LCDs use far less energy and probably look just as good on high end. However, if you are looking in the $1000-$2000 price range, there is no way an LCD can beat a Plasma. I fell into the LCD hype for so long, but after viewing hundreds of posts on the avforums, Plasma (if taken care of) has an amazing picture for the money.
I own a Panasonic plasma right now and I get a lot of "wows" when people come over. No, it isn't as bright and vivid as an LCD, but it looks INCREDIBLY realistic, which is what people should be shooting for. - inactive, on 06/19/2009, -0/+8I'm glad I'm not the only one who still has an appreciation for good old fashioned CRT TVs. Yeah, they may be bulky, but I've always preferred the picture on them compared to LCDs.
- moofree, on 06/19/2009, -1/+8"My mouth tastes like... emails."
- Lucas123, on 06/19/2009, -10/+17I like my plasma TV..
- ryanonfire, on 06/19/2009, -1/+7Tastes like burning.
- keyvoh, on 06/19/2009, -1/+6Me too. My eyes are deceiving me this morning.
...orr it could be the LSD. - mgb4tim, on 06/19/2009, -3/+7I'll stick to my 38" wide HD CRT - no pixel-lag on that one. beautiful!
- Mavital, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4@gluesniffined: I heard the effect makes movies look like day time soap operas on TV. Is that true?
- krazyfiend, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4We all went to drug school. That's all.
- t3know, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4Dude, You can get even bigger monitors on New egg for less shipped
Hanns-G 22" currently going for $139.99 to your door
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ... - Lasereth, on 06/19/2009, -1/+5The article may be right, but LCD prices are STILL falling like crazy, even now. Last Black Friday I bought my LN40A550 for $999 and I thought I got a steal (they were usually $1299 then). Now you can get them for $700 regularly. Hell you can get Aquos and other really high quality LCDs for $999 at 47". Prices have plummeted over the past 7-8 months. They were *supposed* to plummet last fall but they drop wasn't big...then after Christmas, around February-present the prices just went crazy. If you're a gamer and don't have an HDTV, now is the time to buy one.
- EnjoyFailure, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4My eyesight is terrible. It doesn't really matter how nice a tv is, it's still blurry to me.
- TrevorPace, on 06/19/2009, -2/+6Plasma is a complete energy hog. I'd say it's days are numbered for sure.
- breakneckridge, on 06/19/2009, -2/+6You have no idea what you're talking about. The things you just said are so factually incorrect from a technical standpoint that I couldn't even begin to correct what you said. The things you just said literally don't even make sense. What you just said is akin to saying your favorite letter is the number 4.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTFwAxfHgSA - inactive, on 06/19/2009, -1/+5Why would you want that resoultion though? I like slickdeals too, but that isn't a deal.
- sampath3, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4i am not sure actually Why they increased refresh rates to 120Hz.
- cjflashman, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4nVidia's new 3D vision glasses.
- zip000, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4I always think tomorrow is the time to buy one.
I really want an HDTV, but I just can't really justify it as long as my CRT is still working. I can't even use the excuse - "well, we'll just move this one into another room and use it there" since we've already got 2 spare TVs that never get used.
Sometimes I stand over the TV with a cup of coffee thinking, "one little spill is all it will take". - dforty3, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4They will all eventually be replaced by OLED. Can't wait for that technology to become affordable.
- wolfzombie, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4Yeah, LCD prices have plummeted in the last year, but I want to know why 1080p 32" LCD TV's haven't come down. They still cost almost twice as much as the 720p and always more than the 37" 1080p.
- HonoredMule, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3He does manage to get one or two bites on most pages. I can just see breakneckridge straining at his keyboard with neck-veins throbbing. It's kinda sad how little effort is need to troll around here, really.
- Lucas123, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3I own a Panasonic as well, and all my friends who come over to watch games at my house always exclaim how my television is nicer than theirs -- even the ones with LCDs and I only paid $1,200 a year and a half ago.
- inactive, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4Meanwhile, the price of LSD just keeps going up.
- PeppermintPig, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3ryanonfire, inflation can refer to a number of things, but the common use of the word refers to inflation of the money supply. When the Fed creates new credit/money, that IS inflation. The negative effects OF inflation occur over time. I like how a story about LCD screens takes a tangent into ending the fed. :)
Innovation and competition lowers costs and price tags. When prices go up, it's likely government meddling, such as in the medical field. - edwartica, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3You're
- Shwaavay, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4Can someone answer a question for me? Why would they need to increase refresh rates to 120Hz? Frame rates in movies are like 30fps right? So at 60Hz you are already refreshing each frame twice, which makes no sense. Why refresh it 4 times? Not to mention the 240Hz sets, which are drawing the same image on the screen 8 times!!
- SteveMax, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3Sorry, but you fail at trolling. You should either insert semi-informed statements and remove all the just plainly stupid ones or remove the authority tone; the combination makes you an obvious troll. But try again, you could get as entertaining as other famous trolls here.
- aserer511, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3to be expected: fabrication reaches a rock bottom where it is no longer getting EXPONENTIALLY cheaper to make a set
- ZoomBoy, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3<insert lol wut pear here>
- gluesniffined, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3I can see the difference on my 120Hz LCD. The difference is that I feed mine a 1080p/24 signal and with it in 120Hz mode it smooths out the motion so I don't see judder. 5-5 pull down and frame interpolation means that those sweeping/panning scenes in movies don't click across my screen like a slide-show. That is the purpose of 120 and 240Hz.
- Mavital, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3The two major reasons I would use to convince you to spill your coffee are if you:
A) Are a sports fan (once you see a football game in HD, you will never want to go back)
B) You own an xbox360 or PS3 (the added clarity in games in amazing)
Regular television is improved, sure, but sports and video games are where I really appreciate my HDTV. - frequentFlyer, on 06/19/2009, -1/+3I don't care HOW low LSD prices go, I'm not going to take that *****.
- h0ser, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2LSD is super cheap. For 5-10 dollars you can get ***** up for 8 hours. Had some great times as a teenager on LSD.
- davewelsh79, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2It's because TV comes in 30 Hz (29.97 Hz) and movies are filmed in 24 Hz. Showing 30 Hz TV shows on a 60 Hz panel requires displaying each frame twice, but trying to display 24 Hz movies on a 60 Hz panel requires showing one frame for 2 cycles and then the next frame for 3 cycles. This causes a judder when there's motion on the screen.
If you double the frequency of the panel then you can show TV shows by displaying each frame 4 times and you can show movies by displaying each frame 5 times. - EvelynKillface, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2What happened to that cartels-raping-everybody price fixing thing that I recall hearing about? Weren't we supposed to be getting these things dirt cheap by now? Like half the price they are currently?
- PeppermintPig, on 06/19/2009, -1/+3I still enjoy my two 19" Viewsonic CRTs with decent refresh rates, and any upgrade I go with would need to be at least 20" since most LCD models are widescreen. Larger screens are always a bit costly, so the longer I hold out, the better.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2Camera tech like NATAL will make all desktop touchscreens obsolete next year.
Think about it.
PS And OLEDs will make ALL LCDs obsolete very soon... - chaos7, on 06/19/2009, -1/+3i've never noticed "pixel lag" on my LCD montior even once
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2The average human eye can indeed see more than 60 fps.
at 240, you get 120 fps per eye for 3D, etc. That's the magic number for 3d. As stated above, 120 is the magic number for 2d. - Mavital, on 06/19/2009, -1/+3As I was saying in some other threads, if you can get a good deal on one of the Panasonic Plasmas, and are not concerned about the extra power use, you will get an amazing TV for a great price. Plasmas has better blacks and are very good a reproducing realistic colors. High end LCDs are amazing, but in the mid-range, a plasma will smoke an LCD.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2It's great for HD sports in particular.
And you are confused and/or just plain wrong on this one. Your friend it right. Try not to be a techno idjit, k? -
