- Lexus30, on 10/12/2007, -7/+65Sounds like Kevin is a smart guy. The way to stay rich is to shop at Walmart, or Bestbuy.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+54@Lexus: Sure Walmart is cheap, but Kevin is not going to stay rich if he shops at BESTBUY! Its VERY pricey. Every true geek knows that it is NEWEGG ALL THE WAY!
- CaptainWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37You know, I am a church-going guy myself, and your name and comment tickle me.
He isn't rich. And using a bible quote on a Digg comment either tells me you are a troll, or one of the Jesus-extremists we keep laughing at.
A wise person once said "I love Jesus, but I don't like the fan club." or something to that effect. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33I WILL, HE TOOK POSHSUICIDE TO MCDONALDS.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28$60 million could buy a pretty huge needle
- SwabTheDeck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25@Lexus30
I'd imagine not buying Lexuses (Lexii?) would be part of that equation as well. - Zinite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24For the love of god he's not worth $60 Million! He said so himself, he has no idea where they got that number.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Look at the Google guys, the rent an apartment and have billions.
- roeboedog, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26oh lay off!
- danielson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2360 bil? He's the richest man in America?
- ZigZags, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24This interview sounds fake.
- luciferin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I believe 60 Mil. is the estimated worth of Digg.com, if it were to be sold. I'm not quite sure how they come up with THAT number though..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17That's what all rich people do. That's why they stay rich. They don't waste it on ***** items.
- seamarshal, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22I'll tell you what,
Kevin is about to sell out to us loyal TechTV fans,
Everytime there is a post regarding TechTV it gets nailed such as this
http://digg.com/tech_news/Help_Bring_Back_TechTV
If you guys can explain why he is dissing Leo and all his tech buddies, please explain.
The story on the return of techTv was about to be one of the biggest dugg story ever.
However it was erased.
Go ahead amd do a search on TechTV on digg.
You'll see what I mean,,,,,,,,,,,,
We are all being sucked into a new media, that has nothing to do with Tech!!
Most of us are old TechTv fans, And the only reason why digg is popular is because we followed where techTv left off.
I smell a G4 like move here in digg,
I call a vote for no confidence....................Why is digg not supporting Leo, and the rest of the former TechTv people with plans to bring baack TechTV?
Long Live TechTv - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Hey if I was getting all of the attention in the world, I'd take all of my photos with two thumbs up and a big cheesy grin on my face. That pic is total cheese, I would've done the same thing.
- JackQuack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18HE USES CHEAP HEADPHONES! Tell me more.
- NickDouglas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Easy answer: He didn't. Really, he didn't. Kevin has said on Digg that he's not a millionaire.
- NickDouglas, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19As the guy who published it, I'll bet anyone here $100 that my interview is real. I'm not kidding. E-mail me at nick [at] valleywag [dot] com and we'll work out a Paypal bet.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Kevin is worth 60 mil the same way that I'm worth 2 mil. Paper wealth is fantastic for conversation starters and enlarging your e-penis size, though I have to say that Kevin's paper wealth is even shadier than mine considering the market for digg.com.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I didn't even know who Kevin Rose was when I started reading Digg.
- Robotsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Yeah... you know those old folks, always frightened to death of... horizontally striped t-shirts, backward hats, headphones, and smiles?
The "old folks" relative to our generation were tripping on acid in a ***** field somewhere when they were our (at least -my-) age. I doubt a 29 year old giving the thumbs up is going to make them ***** their pants, no offence :P - otatop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10'@jesusandpals didn't Jebus also say "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all".'
No, dude, that was Thumper's mom. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It's kind of stupid to spend a lot of money on headphones you plan to travel with. $20 headphones sound fine to me -- especially if you're listening to MP3s on them.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9http://web2.commongate.com/post/wealth_punks_the_other_cover_/photos/13017
- fifty50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Shortest interview ever.
- geezusfreeek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10You are taking this way out of proportion. Look at my username. _I'm_ supposed to be the freak here!
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -3/+10I didn't realize that 4 questions meritted a "discussion".
1300 diggs? Seriously? - fourfive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8MDR-V150
- ginty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The article title (and for that matter the article) is bogus. Breaking even isn't making money and it certainly isn't making 60 mil in 18 months.
This isn't even paper wealth its speculative wealth. I may be sitting on a 10 million dollar couch, but unless someone pays me that for it, its only worth what I put into it. - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Yup, I like that photo too. A bit cheesy, but he still looks like a winner. At least to me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm digging that up just because I can't stop laughing.
- uncleFester, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10"Nothing wrong with being cheap, but V150's are not "seriously good"
Points off, Kevin Rose =("
why aren't they good? because they're sony? because they cost $20?
for shiat's sake.. a brand name doesn't make something good. specs don't make something good. how they sound to you, if they fit the bill you're looking for, if they're of enough quality to satisfy what you want/need.. they're good.
I'm so SICK of this brand/style culture we have. I have some name-brand stuff (ipod as an example) and it's NOT because it is an apple. it's because it fits the bill for what i want or expect.
-r - cdwhatcott, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I can't believe you are all discussing this interview/photo like you know the guy personally. "anyone who watches Diggnation on a regular basis knows how he talks and this does not even sound like him." That has to be one of the lamest things I've ever read. Stop acting like Kevin Rose is some messiah... he's just a guy.
- ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Maybe get some pics of him and Posh Suicide as well ...
- Bitgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm still trying to figure out who this "kid" is. Who, that 29 year old kid on the cover? Who wrote this, some 70 year old with a fondness for saying "young whippersnapper" and "meddling kids"?
- suomi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Are you drunk?
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Look at the Google guys, the rent an apartment and have billions."
Actually, if you plan on staying in an areas more than a few years, buying a home is much smarter financially. - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If I were tripping on acid, that photograph would *definitely* traumatise me...
- applepro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3those cheap headphone are seriously good — the price performance ratio make them that way. spending $150 for dj headphones for us normal humans and how we use them is a seriously bad value.
- jupitersolo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Unfortunately we will never see tech TV come back. Everybody is doing there own thing. And that's part of life.
My big question is... If Sarah and Kevin broke up because she wanted him to save money for a house and future, what is she doing NOW that she spending all of her money going around the world with her new HUSBAND???
Not to knock her on this, if it is true. People make mistakes, I know I have! - Lexus30, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@SwabTheDeck -no i dont lthink having many Lexus' is a good idea to stay rich... although i wish i had one.
@ShrimpCrackers -well when you need something on the fly, newegg isnt your best bet. - dmurphy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4link to the story:
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_33/b3997001.htm?chan=top+news_top+news - hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Soon he's worth nothing because the way the site is evolving. Digg is getting worse and worse with crappy stories like these getting more than 1600 diggs. I'm all for Kevin Rose interviews, but when it's 4 lame questions, then it only deserves the "OK, this is Lame" rating.
- Fafhrd68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First we must assume that the price put upon Kevin's head is an estimated value of ALL assets. Assets can be valued at hard assets and soft assets. Hard are things like real estate, cash, cars, etc. Soft is ideas, possible revenue earnings, and many other non tangible things.
Seeing as DIGG is one of the top visited sites on the web and the real estate of the web is so speculative then we can venture a guess that a large portion of his $60 million is soft assets.
This dynamic always happens when a leader in the community starts to become and icon with in the community. Especially in this community. Once someone has raised him/herself into he area of making a sizable amount of capital, then they are seen as "sell-outs".
Like every group of people, we hope and wish that our icons will stay true and follow those things that we have liked about them. People grow and change. If Kevin is in his "I Like" this money thing, who cares? I personally don't think he is selling out, just moving on and doing what makes HIM happy. - gwinerreniwg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@jasqwerty: Some people think a $100 bottle of wine is worth it (but $6 Boone's will get you drunk). Some folks think a $45,000 BMW is worth it (but a $12,000 Hyundai will get you there). Some recording engineers will only record on $50,000 Neve or Sony boards (but you can record on a $325 Mackie). Of course there will always be diminishing returns with any product, but the point is that for those that appreciate audio (or whatever product types you're referring to), aficionados perceive the incremental differences as a substantial differentiators - and to them it makes all the difference in the world. Anyone who says they cant tell the difference between $50 and $150 headphones is either a liar, or doesn't appreciate sound enough to care. There's nothing wrong with cheap audio equipment, but don't dis those that _can_ tell a difference. Definitely not the placebo effect.
- smellinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And he doesn't need to "make 60 Million in 18 months" of profits.
The value of a company can be approximated by considering the sum of all future cash flows. A quick approximation: How much (in today's dollars) will digg net over 20 years?
It is believable that that number is $200M. Just because the last 12 months were breakeven, at a few mill in income doesn't mean that the FUTURE isn't "Rose-y".
Sure, it's speculation, but not as speculative as company valuations for which there is real stock exchanging hands every day (*cough* google *cough*). - DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3hehe.. sony just got a major plug.
- raingrove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Alright. You know what guys? The fact is, Kevin may or may not worth $60m but he is probably worth much more than most of the people around here.
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5lol, it is a funny pic. Noob question: How did he make 60 million in a nutshell?
