- Alaerus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Katamari Damacy helped me get through my year tour in the desert. You should have seen the look on the other soldier's faces when they saw me playing it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Screw the PS3, I'd like to see what he would do with the Revolution...
- TubaFrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If only there were an upcoming videogame console to embrace unique creativity.
- hollismb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, it says that he plans on doing that in the next ten years, which isn't really anytime soon. Not the best title choice you've got there.
- z.unit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This guy belongs at Nintendo, he's saying exactly the same things!

>so yeah, we heart katamari is the same game with new levels

>But Mr Takahashi did not want to make a sequel. He only got

>ahead without him. - Maverick83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a lie. He's just going to find anotehr company that can supply him with more acid and mushrooms.

Here Here - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to agree, we are going graphics crazy and have forgotten about substance. I can't wait for the nest generation with physics cards and the like.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nintendo should hire this guy. Their values seem to be aligned. He could get the best of both worlds that way and we would still get crazy fun games.
- Wreckk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a shame... a true innovator...
Luckily there is a PSP and DS version coming :)
Really looking forward to playing with the stylus. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Possible reasons he quits:
-Offer he couldn't refuse from William Gates the 3rd (wink wink).
-Illegal substances are being regulated to the max in Japan.
-The burning of people into flaming stars will come back to haunt him.
-Artists and innovators have no room in this world society. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This makes me sad. Imagine Katamari on the ps3, or the psp! Lots of ideas lost forever...:(
- Sigvard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! [sob]
- c0dek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet - in ten years or so I may have a kid I can roll around one of his playgrounds - now THAT's fun!
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On the 360 or PS3, Katamari could be ***** awesome. Imagine: Endless fields of ***** to roll up. Endless. :')
- icespide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's already a Katamari on the way for PSP
- elShaggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bummer. I would really like to see those playgrouds though.
- .mark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The guy who created Katamari is giving it all up to go creat playgrounds?
Figures. - BurntToast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is really sad. It's really sad when the industry relies on stupid remakes like 15 incarnations of "Grand Theft Auto: Black Butte" or sequels of games... instead of making innovative and original stuff. The guy is right though, right now there is no market for it.
Shame really. - markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, now thats a true genius. I totally agree with him that games nowadays are driven by "sales and marketing", not so much as innovation. I wish there were more developers like him that likes to think outside the box. Too many "realistic" games out there, not enough surreal, artistic and imaginative.
- chuckmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dude those playgrounds are gonna be fun for ME too =)
- innternal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I salute him for his creativeness
Leave it to the corporations to screw over artists and innovators
/salute - gamer31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"why would katamari on the ps3 be amazing? its not exactly a visually amazing game. they'd probably make it look simple and kinda crappy on any system. he's not exactly an innovator either. in case you didn't notice, we
my comment messed up cause of my attempt at making a heart. so yeah, we heart katamari is the same game with new levels to roll crap up in. lame"
I think that you proved Mr Takahashi right. Its not supposed to have really great graphics its supposed to be colorful and fun. And If you read the article it said he didnt want to create a second game. All he wants to do is create games that will be fun and offer many choices not a realistic game with one path.
"In fact, he says he feels slightly ashamed that much of the talk about the new machines is about more realistic looking games, rather than about using the raw power to do different things in a game." - LittleOni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the kind of person Will Wright was talking about the industry needing. Look. Many of you might think Katamari Damacy is gay, pointless, unattractive, and the like, but you're missing the point. Video games are meant to be a form of escape, but it seems like the more powerful the sysems become, the more developers want to push realism down our throats. There's a reason Nintendo sells millions of Mario titles: they're fun, easily accessable, and most importantly fantastical. I, for one, loved both Katamari games. It's sad to see people like Keita Takahashi talk of leaving the community or those like Lorne Lanning who have pratically left. It's a shame that the industry works the way it does nowadays, but that's what happens when the priority shifts from creativity and fun to making the next Madden/GTA/Need for Speed/movie and/or TV series-based game. If you make money the safe way, why bother shaking things up?
- Waxbeetle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NOOOOOOOOO! HE WAS MY HERO!
- ados, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0he's moody guy and creative, i like it!
- dr.tchock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0please RTFA.
"In 10 years time, I am not going to be making games any more," Keita Takahashi told the BBC News website.
"I would like to create a playground for children," he said. "A normal playground is flat but I want an undulating one, with bumps." - burrito4891, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I completely agree DiMo and CDHarrisUSF, Can you imagine Nintendo and this guy? I just read this article after reading Reggie Harris' recent discussion about the future of videogames. It seems like they fit each other's ideals completely. Besides, I have been playing games for 15 years and I am getting a little tired as of late of the lack of progress in them. Sure we have nearly perfected the different genres, but what about the games that are so unique that they defy categories. I cant wait for the Revolution and I sincerely hope this guy at least throws one more Katamari Nintendo's way.
- natemc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Modern playgrounds suck, they take all the fun out in exchange for safety. You haven't grown up until you get at least a few cuts, scrapes and maybe a broken limb from playing on a playground.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This makes me sad. Imagine Katamari on the ps3, or the psp! Lots of ideas lost forever...:("
Like everyone else said: Forget PSP and the rootkit-fantastic PS3. Imagine what he could do on the DS and Nintendo Revolution. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't remember which conference it was, but he gave a presentation once that was totally surreal. He did nothing like any other developer I've ever seen/heard. It was like they had let some crazy guy in to talk about games...and he schooled everyone.
Bad headline, yes, but don't be surprised even if he does say he's quitting. Only artists and children can understand him, and even they must doubt it sometimes. - b0rg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool guy. Katamari was proof to me that the enjoyment of a game has very little to do with photorealistic graphics and immensely complex plots involving hollywood voice-overs and licensed cars or personalities.
I think I'd like visiting a playground he designed. With or without a giant, sticky beach ball. :-) - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By the way it says he won't be quitting until at least 10 years. He can still write a good deal between now and then, hopefully for a system that encourages creativity (Revolution) over bling (PS3).
- xaph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A game can be realistic. But a game should also be fun.
And so, one man was taken away, and creativity, was destroyed. - croc1892, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:(( will creative titles will be sorely missed
- hollismb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Geesh, you people can't read the article. It says that he doesn't think he'll be making games in ten years. That's it.
- unclejesse0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That sucks. The game is crazy fun.
- croc1892, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0his*
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well he's blown his wad, I don't know what the game industry is like over there. But it sure sucks here.
No one should have to put up with all the struggle and long hours only to have your ideas twisted and crushed. - BloodyRids, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"I dont know about you, but those playgrounds are gonna be crazy fun for little kids."
Huh? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I was gonna say that, but i forgot
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I wonder if The King will be at the playgrounds. :3
Likewise, I agree with him. Gaming just isn't heading in a good direction... - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I blame you all, the video gamers who go "OMG, REALISTIC PIXEL SHADER 16.0536 IS GOING TO KICKS SO MUCH ASS LOL NINGAYDO HAS A NOOB STICK," for driving creative geniuses like this man away from the industry.
- DiMo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0nintendo revolution might fix those weird controls, and a lot of people would have fun...why did he quit on the fans and not bring something to nintendo :(?
- Play, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
this sucks - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0sweetness, submit a story on that
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Good that ***** was gay
- osuadh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0my comment messed up cause of my attempt at making a heart. so yeah, we heart katamari is the same game with new levels to roll crap up in. lame
