- noahw, on 11/09/2007, -4/+38Price range went from 100 million to 300 million in less than a year. The current trend on the web is: Build a website -> Get a lot of users -> Sell
- chris9902, on 11/09/2007, -3/+37Who would really want this site? What would they do with it? I can't see anyone recouping $300million from ads.
- NoHandle, on 11/10/2007, -3/+36Is this the only site you visit? Almost all the comments are ***** now. Loads of faked stories and ad bombardment. Seriously, before Digg went "mainstream" it would be as you described it. Now it is like reading youtube comments.
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -7/+291. Sell digg
2. Create new site like digg
3. Get digg users to use the new site
4. Profit! - EnderMB, on 11/09/2007, -3/+18In all honesty I can't see Digg being a good investment for a company. I can totally believe Jay trying to sell it to whoever will take it. The reason Digg will be hard to sell is because it has very little use. In essence you're just buying a system that's been emulated many times already. Also, the community here would be a liability to any company that buys it.
If I were Kevin/Jay I'd form Digg and other good social networking sites into a network of sorts and play it out on their own. A social news site like Newsvine sold extremely well and could turn into a valuable asset to whatever company purchases it. Digg would be nothing more than a liability to whoever decides to own it. - code, on 11/09/2007, -3/+18why aren't you there now, if reddit is better? oh wait, i forgot you just wanted to complain so you'll be heard.
- Dankoozy, on 11/10/2007, -3/+17yes. sell it to some boring investment company who will go out of its way to stop bad news about other companies they own from getting on this site. put more ads on this site in a desperate attempt to get their 300 million back and ruin it in the process.
this is usually what happens when a site gets sold. it will almost certainly become more commercial, you will start to see sponsored digg stories and other such things as the investors do all they can to get their money back. - xero69, on 11/09/2007, -3/+15Considering the US economy is about to tank I'd take the money and run like hell. Assuming the new site owners don't pepper the site with additional advertising or make it super ugly I don't think most people would really notice.
- PDAIsAOk, on 11/09/2007, -0/+12If you sell it just make sure you ask for the money in Euros, or gold.
- cuzican, on 11/09/2007, -6/+17I personally hope they don't sell it.. It will just not be the same place.. I know everything must change with time & money, but when vision and purpose change the grassroots get pulled and people like myself drift away... If they do sell, hopefully they will keep the vision and purpose intact..
- mt066, on 11/09/2007, -0/+11They'd probably make more ads. Or whatever the business term is for that. "Synergize our revenues"
- T3rry, on 11/13/2007, -3/+13You forgot the rest of the trend
1. build a website
2. get lots of users
3. sell to large corporation
4. watch all your hard work and dedication go down the drain because said corporation tries to modify it "for the better" and in doing so destroy the whole purpose of the site.
(case in point, The screen savers(and TechTv in general), not a website, but it follows the cycle) - Yareking, on 11/09/2007, -0/+105. go back to step 1
- dreicher, on 11/09/2007, -1/+9Especially the dedicated "Photos" section just around the corner and all...
- KingBunny, on 11/09/2007, -2/+10"Now it is like reading youtube comments."
I object to this statement, on the ground that I like turtles, and furthermore, the moon landing was staged by aliens. - badnewsblair, on 11/09/2007, -1/+9Interesting food for thought I suppose. Digg is the big boy in social bookmarking. Whatever it goes for, it will make the inestment worth it. The problem will be user backlash.
And TechCrunch is great and all, but could I PLEASE have a few more adds along the right side? Please!? /sarcasm - strictnein, on 11/09/2007, -2/+10If a big company wants to buy my company for millions, and then burn our offices to the ground, I really won't care.
- hellyes, on 11/09/2007, -0/+8Big deals like this usually come with non-compete clauses.
- say592, on 11/09/2007, -0/+7Personally, I don't want digg sold.
I mean, I get that they want money, but if its sold, then we have to deal with a new digg.
The sale of companies hurts every one. The consumer, and the people involved.
Kevin, remember how pissed you were when Tech TV was sold, and they changed TSS to AOTS, and everything went down hill?
I don't really think you want something like that to happen to digg, especially since you can prevent it. - rockocamel, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7dont click it it makes your browser go insane
what a turd - EnderMB, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6I seriously doubt it. Digg clones are everywhere, and free scripts are already available to make your own "Digg" website.
- headzoo, on 11/09/2007, -1/+6"The current trend on the web is: Build a website -> Get a lot of users -> Sell"
And why not? Creative people like to create. They don't like to get into the drudgery of administering their creation. I don't think there's anything wrong with creating something, fostering it for a while, and then pawning it off on someone else so you have time to create something new. - deadnoob, on 11/08/2007, -2/+7you wouldnt buy digg because you dont have the money
- tyywebb, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5Screw you guys, I'm going home.
- wush, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5i wouldn't rubbish you if i dugg the money
- pault107, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5But you did comment.
- spyrochaete, on 11/10/2007, -2/+7Slashdot's stories are more tech-centric and its comments are almost always more thoughtful and poignant. That's why it's been my home page for half a decade.
- rowlodge, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5okay, ill buy it dammit!, ...$300?
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -2/+7You'd spend 300 mil for this ***** comment system?
- FoxOrian, on 11/09/2007, -2/+6How about that.
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5Yes, it will be the same place, as long as all the whining anti-capitalism diggers don't flee because of it. The basis will always be the same: submit, digg, frontpage. So just stick around and the formula will continue to work.
- chuckythe2651, on 11/09/2007, -2/+6If Digg is sold to a Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc it will lose a lot of what makes Digg... well Digg. This is a community of people that scour the internet for news some good and some bad and some not always legal (Thanks DMCA!) If they sell to a big publicly traded company, Digg's focus will have to switch from community to share holders. A publicly traded companies first responsibility is to it's share holder NOT the community it serves (no matter what their stupid corp motto says).
The HD-DVD key battle would not have been one that the community would have won if it was battling Google or any of those companies. We won because Kevin and the rest of the guys at Digg still remember that it's about the community not just the stock holders.
When (not if) Digg is sold I will be leaving for a new site. I won't be pissed at the Digg guys they have given me 3 years of internet goodness, but it's capitalism. They want to be a millionaire just like I do, but they had the good idea. I say good for them, but bad for the community. - MtheoryX, on 11/09/2007, -1/+5I'm sure that your "passion" is appreciated by your users.
- datastorageguy, on 11/09/2007, -0/+4I would give you a six pack of Narragansett for it. Oh wait they don't make Narragansett anymore...how about this used styrofoam cup?
- spyrochaete, on 11/09/2007, -6/+92. Show lots of ads and don't spend money to fix bugs.
- SpykerSpeed, on 11/09/2007, -8/+11If Kevin and Jay become multi-millionaires, it couldn't have happened to cooler people. I won't be pissed as long as they invite us on their yachts and still have some say in how the site is run.
- killerofkiller, on 11/09/2007, -2/+5been here long enough? is this your second profile? cause it says u joined in 07...
i've only been here since 05 and this site has changed a whole lot since then. it was about tech news and not about funny pictures and videos. when you look on the right side "top stories in every category" bar and they all say ....FUNNY [PIC]
Digg has become alot more about promoting your blog/website/company, and that's why alot of the veteran users have left and or dont use the site as much anymore. - Ireland, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2"Who would really want this site? What would they do with it? I can't see anyone recouping $300million from ads."
I take it you don't know how much it costs to advertise on digg, cause I look into it for business reasons, and it's very *****' expensive. It cost over $50,000 to get 10% of the ads for under a week. Work it out, that's $26,000,000 pr year, and you own the site and get to greatly improve company image as a result. - inactive, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2Same douche from above. Don't click it, it leads to goatse's little sister.
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2They could always go public and not have to sell out.
- theprez, on 11/09/2007, -1/+3What the hell? 666,666 times? Did you mean 66% of what they wanted or was that just a retarded joke?
- scooterbaga, on 11/09/2007, -7/+9I'm terrified of things changing too much after a sell. Digg is really a wonderful place.
It's the first place I found myself going to everyday. The community and info is unrivaled IMO. - inactive, on 11/09/2007, -6/+8Okay, I've been on Digg long enough to tell that you are blowing things way out of proportion. Digg has it's problems just like any other social news site. You're not going to find anything different on Propeller or Reddit or Slashdot or Mixx.
- zdiggler, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3I fond my self coming here everday but as of right now I don't like digg no more. People on here get excited too much too fast like bunch of little kids. Digg on damn near any thing that they're think its cool but turn out to be a fake ete.
Quality of content has went down the drain. - slashbot, on 11/09/2007, -4/+6You already profited at step 1,....
- thpii, on 11/09/2007, -2/+4Well, TechCrunch said it, so it must be good advice. *sigh* Sell if it's the right decision for you, not because some overrated blogger thinks you should.
- pault107, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2Buried and reported for being a *****.
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -1/+3Unless this thing goes to Google or stays put, I'm leaving.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -1/+3Aha... I like that. Make an announcement on diggnation or something. jadleson and co get the money, we keep our community without extra ads or anything. I really like that.
- BuddingMonkey, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2wow uberhotgeek you duped everyone. What's next lemon party? 2 girls 1 cup? goatse?

What is Digg?
