- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -14/+46joost is lame and the video quality suck considering its h264. the channels suck , the ads are annoying and cpu usage is horrendous.
- lexlaw, on 10/10/2007, -5/+27I'm one of those million, though I don't have the program and the frequent emails are marked as spam. It's a great program, don't get me wrong I think that Milo is the only thing that could even compare, but I have seen more entertaining channels with my TV's antenna.
- kidcodea, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20and 999.000 dropped it after seing it was pure crap. i was one of many.
next hype... - Hayes, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19I've had Joost for quite a while now but never actually sat down to watch a show on it. They really need to work on the user-friendliness and make an easy way for me to find shows I'll actually like!
- jjhat1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Joost as a platform is very usable. While the content still leaves something to be desired, it is growing slowly. The more people watch, the more likely providers will be to post their content, especially if they start to get add revenue.
- samard2002, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Joost is probably the single most unexciting entry in the "next big thing" list.
- MeMongo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13They have every episode of Lexx and Transformers as well as about 5 years of Fifth Gear episodes. Of course they have a ***** of other shows too, but those are the ones that I've been watching.
- h4mx0r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8You speak truth. However, I think Joost is a somewhat smart idea. If they can just optimize it a little further, figure out what people actually want, then they might be in buisness. Until then, I've uninstalled it and I won't be using it again for a while.
Oh, and 1 million was probably pretty easy to get. It's basically advertised as TV on your computer, and everyone wants to put everything in one place. Too bad it's not really worth it. Yet. - gmprunner, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Yeah, there's a decent amount of shows on there but most of them suck.
- revenge7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6No
- Barbega, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Can I have an Invite?
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Region coding!!!! Is this our Video IP future! I think not. I quit the first day of my trial in disgust.
Bitter? Hell yes. When we all know what video IP could be, why should be have to settle like this? - MeMongo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It doesn't have to be full screen. You can resize it.
- acumenprobitas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I like Joost. I've been watching Transformers, G.I. Joe, Ren and Stimpy, Robot Chicken, Rocky and Bullwinkle, some music videos, some national geographic documentaries, and the quality is not bad at all. The commercials are not bad either. Do you know that you can edit your personal channel list? I found a lot of less terrible content by looking through the COMPLETE channel list.
- treed, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8My problem with Joost is that it's a fullscreen program that tries to be a TV replacement. I'd much prefer an iTunes-like interface.
- MeMongo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You can get a joost invite here:
http://joost.com/presents/gigaom-newteevee/ - prabjot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7I was expecting some replies asking for invites, good to see none asking :)
- drcreek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Real content will bring the Joost boys success.
- th3wiz4rd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I've had a Joost account since it first came out (signed up for beta testing before it came out), and I check for improvements every few weeks.
My Joost Pros/Cons --
Pros:
More content is being added constantly (some good, some bad, some awful).
Interface is fairly simple and fairly intuitive (not the best but decent, despite what some here have been saying).
It's stable: I've never seen it crash, I haven't seen any buffering problems (although this could be due to the arguably low video quality).
You don't have to download the entire video/tv show/movie in order to watch.
Cons:
A LOT of the content sucks.
- Very few good movies (mostly old crap that you've never heard of).
- Very few good TV shows (lot of old crap).
Video quality isn't the best, no HD content.
No linux support.
No ppc support.
Can't watch diggnation on Joost (no podcast support). - kidcodea, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5joost is not an idea. its the obvious route, with an awful materialization and content.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5joost the program is great, the service however is crap.
everyone digging comments down such as 'joost is crap' are just people who don't have it who have bought into the hype. - DarkDx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+51 million users...
...and still sucks
(they have merely good content and the per-continent content restriction is stupid. - lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5That was a pretty succinct and accurate review.
- AbeVigoda, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Joost would be great ... if there was something to watch.
- boomshakalaka, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The content providers need to, uhm, provide shows you'll like. there is only so much of Stella and Man Bites Dog that i can take.
- randomracoon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+51 Million user mark is great, but it means bupkis if Joost doesn't pay attention to the following:
a) The new version is a CPU hog. People are consistently reporting 100% usage even on Joost's own forum and still they have not even acknowledged it.
b) The support for OS other than XP is dicey or non-existant. Even for vista.
c) UI sucks ass. It takes for eternity for it to respond and it is highly non-intuitive. Best yet, there are channels that are not listed but turn up on the search. WTF?
Yes, I know it is still in "beta" phase, but so are 90% of Google's products. "Beta" is the new "Gold". - clackerd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3please stop using "ur."
- rmetzger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Not a bad idea ... but the content has not changed for the last 6 months+. It needs to be more configurable, because some people will use it like youtube and others like a tv. The quality varies from ok to a facial abortion of pixels. And lastly .. whats the deal with ads during content?
- eplawless, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3One million minus one for me too. Nothing good is available in Canada, it's useless here.
- robshoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They need to get more shows and more channels. Of course, I suppose they're probably doing all they can to seek deals with major companies.
- radam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Though I'm impressed enough with Joost to keep it on my computer, I am getting increasingly bored with it. The quality keeps improving, but I do keep running into mostly the same stale stuff I've already seen. It's time for Joost to put those media partnerships to use and get fresher material ready to view.
- eplawless, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3...Joost. Joomla! is a CMS
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's a P2P app. That's how it works. Plus, the advertising is just the occasional static image at the corner of the screen. All Joost bandwidth ceases when you close the program. It's no biggie.
- MeMongo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You can get a joost invite here:
http://joost.com/presents/gigaom-newteevee/ - djh816, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2some decent shows on the us one but it isn't great quality (video-wise). i have 12mbps download and ABC's episode player looks beautiful on it and Joost just doesn't come near that quality.
- kd1s, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm one of the beta testers and I've recommended to a bunch of people. That being said, yes it's a CPU hog, the content is lacking, and the ads are ridiculous. In one little 8 minute show, I counted a DOZEN ads for Microsoft products. Doesn't make MS look to good as far as I'm concerned.
- ScotchInBox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2blogspam: direct link http://www.apcmag.com/6774/1_million_joost_users_prepare_for_year_end_launch
- viewtiful4ever, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I got Joost and it has crazy good potential. They joost need to get a more attractive UI and stuff. It feels like if you're not computer savvy you won't know what you're doing.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4no no no...you're doing it wrong:
I can has invite? - KielKilla, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3You're kidding right? The last thing Joost needs is a more attractive UI. They have already got a fairly well designed UI. What it needs is everything but a more attractive UI.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Whatever happened to Joox.net?
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2WHAT?!?! That is the most friggin adorable, awesomest movier ever. It's one of like 8 DVDs I own. They actually have footage of animals giving birth! NEVER diss Milo & Otis.
- Guspaz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Joost; it's got a counter-intuitive confusing interface, and almost zero content outside the US. Last time I fired it up, the vast majority of channels didn't work, and there just weren't many channels in the first place.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I haven't used joost for two months, nothing new on their network.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Needs PowerPC support!
- mz00m, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No... watching the movie Milo & Otis is nearly as entertaining as all the Joost Channels.
- avasol, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The interface is cool, but content is crap (there's virtually nothing to see) and what's worse is that the quality of the movies is absolute crap too. As long as I can get my HD TV fix from "other sources", Joost doesn't stand a chance.
- iscripter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Joost is ok for the content they do have. What they really need is to get a better GUI because what they have now is really confusing and difficult to navigate. Also they could use a hardware device like AppleTV so I could watch Joost programming on my TV set, now that would be killer.
- KielKilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They often crash. I'm starting to get worried though.
- KielKilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Once again I'm saying: They do not need to work on this GUI at this point and time.
