Confirmed: Kati and two children found, still searching area for Mr. Kim. - darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -4/+138he's a tech guy, not a ***** woodsman, give the dude a break!
- Germanicus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+120They were out there for quite a while, last seen saturday. I suppose it may not have been the smartest thing to do, but his family was depending on him. Wife and 2 young daughters. With no help in sight, I'd have seriously considered it too.
- WarMace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+118this is probibly the first time in history a police scanner recieved the digg effect.
- schmerge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+106@zybch
If I were in the same position I would do the same exact thing even if it is the stupid thing to do. If I had to watch my wife and two young daughters slowly die, I'd absolutely risk my life to get help.
If I recall correctly two of the soccer players who crashed in the Andes crossed the mountain range and did save all the other survivors. Sometimes you have to risk it all to come out alive, even if it is the stupid thing to do. - 8bit_Hero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+83THAT MADE MY DAY!
- holzp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+75Wherever James Kim is now, this is the outcome he wanted. It will be the first thing he asks when he is found.
- ArmyOfFun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+70@zybch
You're not being dugg down for your message (stay in your car in an emergency like this) but HOW you're saying it. If what I'm saying still doesn't make sense, here's a helpful google search:
http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3Atact - canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+67100% true. The kids are saved. His wife is saved. Any man knows that is #1. I hope James is now found.
- buzzedlightyear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+66i'm usually not the most optimistic person ever. realistically, how often would a family missing for almost a week in the cold (its been cold here, i live near by) survive, especially with a 7 month y/o baby, but i'm very happy to see this, as my doubts started to set in after them disappearing with no trace with the cold weather and a week going by.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -10/+76Damn. If only there were some water underneath all that snow I'd be saved!
- siggyfawn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+59He left 2 days ago to find help, and no one has heard from him?
I'm still extremely worried about James. He obviously didn't find help, and has been wandering in the woods for 2 days. Hardly great news. - r4NGe, on 10/12/2007, -20/+77I'll just assume that post is real, not fake.
- cbrian, on 10/12/2007, -8/+63I would like to be the first person to say, "***** you."
- Nichevo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+58While you are absolutely correct Zybch, this mistake could/probably has cost him his life. So it is best not to criticize him about it.
Besides, as a man you know that we are practically incapable of sitting around waiting...
-A Canadian who has spent some time in the bush... - bigtrouble77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53I hope this has the makings for an episode of "I Shouldn't Be Alive" on Discovery... Mostly because everyone always lives in the end. I really hope they find James soon.
- RomulusX86, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53I'm listening to the live police scanner,
atm, 6:19 EST, they are searching the camp area
ill post more when the info comes in
(btw if you want to listen http://www.joco-scanning.info/GPDPS%20Police%20Radio%20Feed.m3u ) - jojoko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47the title is wrong. james is still missing. but i'm glad they found the wife and kids!
- DaWolfman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+54Hope they find Jim soon!
Was it a car accident? (The CNET video won't play) - ptcfast2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44This is real. Listen to the direct scanner feed:
http://www.joco-scanning.info/JoCo%20Sheriff%20Radio%20Feed.m3u - theendlessnow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47It would have made it to the front page faster if the headline read:
James and Kati found, pics with CSS rounded corners, see how - thegreyfox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43Remind me to punch you the next time you are lost in NYC.
- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44It's weird, but it's just like in this made for TV movie based on a real story:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111225/
Do those kind of things happen more often in the US?
Hard to imagine for someone in (snowless) densily populated Europe.
I just hope they are all OK. - RomulusX86, on 10/12/2007, -9/+46hope James is alright
- charmaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35I am so glad the wife and children were found alive.
Jim left the car 2 days ago. Its cold, but not so cold that he would automatically be dead after 2 days. Plus, he had snow shoes...has it snowed in the past two days? If not, they should be able to track him. - buzzedlightyear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34"Update- the helicopter is "transporting three patients" back to the airport. "
:-D - Ace02, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Can we fix the title of the story? James is still missing.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34Dehydration will get you long before starvation will.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -17/+48News flash: you're not emotionally stable.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30"Do those kind of things happen more often in the US?"
There's one in the news just about every year, and who knows how many that don't make the news... We've got a lot of empty land out here, and a lot of snow. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Welcome to my block list, Surreptitious.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Lee family? I thought it was Kim.
- arktos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29no it took like 3 minutes for that story about Rumsfeld resigning to hit front page*.
*not verified for accuracy. - KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31"I'm not saying that I hope James dies or anything, just that hes a stupid fool for leaving the car, and his wife and kids when the chances of being found in the car are much higher than stumbling about blindly in unfamiliar surrounds.."
And you're a stupid fool for calling this guy names you insensitive prick. Whether it was the right thing to do or not, the guy is not stupid by any means. Sitting in a car for days and days, most of us probably would have done the same thing. I'm sure he knew the risks when he left on his own, but he probably felt that he had to do something. Why don't you grow up and at least offer the guy a prayer instead of calling him names. - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27The only survival show I've seen concerning babies said that they were excellent survivors so long as they didn't have a pre-existing illness. The surviving-in-cold-with-a-baby has been done before, even without a car or other man-made structure to keep warm in, although 7 days is a practical limit since you're starving by that point.
- Radionesiac, on 10/12/2007, -10/+36I am a very emotionally-stable, 19-year-old male. I can't remember the last time I cried, let alone wept tears of joy.
But I literally am as I am typing this.
I don't know why this story has struck such a chord in me, but it has, praise to whatever higher power/stroke of luck/karma/good-will kept them alive. I got knots every time I would see that picture of James and his gorgeous baby daughter...I am holding out very high hope that James is found, but at the very least, thank God the children survived.
or to summarize: teh rescue team scored teh phat l00t - joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27They found them using the cell tower info - there was a post about this technique yesterday posted on Digg. I'm glad the method worked.
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28James is still missing fool.
- aphonik, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29I hope this isn't a joke... because it would be pretty sick if it was.
Lets just hope James is found safe
Edit: Link was just posted on guestbook to listen live to radios: http://www.joco-scanning.info/ - holzp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Confirmed! Collective joy!
Second best outcome so far. Godspeed James Kim. - FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Hopefully this will turn out like the Stolpa case. For those who don't remember, James and Jennifer Stolpa along with their 4mo old baby survived 8 days after being stranded in a Nevada snowstorm. They eventually tried to hike out, but the mom and baby couldn't continue and stayed in a cave. James Stolpa had to hike through 60 miles of snow where he was eventually found and was able to tell rescuers where the mom and baby were. They all survived.
- milk93rd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Only wish I had been quicker to be the first to say "***** you". Let me be the second.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Digg's ability to rapidly frontpage breaking news is one of its greatest strengths.
- steger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22to quote from there:
"American Medical Response has activated their Rapid Action Team or Reach and Treat team (RAT). The team is en-route to the Grants Pass airport to be airlifted to the vehicle to treat the wife and kids. A helo is due shortly to pick up the RAT team. The search is still on for the husband. They are on a main road near Black Bar Lodge and deputies and Search and Rescue people are heading there on foot and 4x4 to look for the husband." - siggyfawn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I hope he's okay.
- Trogdor420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22 Nice comment Scott! Fitting that your #1 story is a about Hitler........ ass hole!
- diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Every piece of logic tells you to stay in the car, but after a while you wonder......
That is what men do. They take risks. The risk of dying in the car was very likely. After a week, everyone could easily be near severe dehydration. If, you did not take the chance you may be too weak later to even try. I have two daughters and I would have eventually left in search for help, too. I hope he is found soon.
Makes you wonder, what you should take along on a trip to call for help. Flares? CBs? Damn, that would be a hard situation. I would assume he would have climbed up to the road first. I hope he did not fall. The made for TV ending would be nice right now. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24"Damn. If only there were some water underneath all that snow I'd be saved!"
You can't just eat the snow. That'll just bring on hypothermia faster. Which means you have to find some way to melt it, which, depending on conditions and available equipment, could be hard.
"Yeah, i wonder how they kept themselves warm, the car battery should've ran out after a day.."
If they were lucky, the car was still in running condition, in which case they could use it both for heat and electricity. (In which case melting snow would be easy)
If you're in the middle of the arctic with nothing but a parka, on the other hand, you're *****. And it's not gonna be starvation that kills you. - mgkwho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Anyone know what happened? Like, where the wife and kids were found / exactly why they were missing?
Bring home Jim!
