- SlowOnTheUptake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Yes, in retrospect, he should have stayed with the car.
But consider this: by going to look for help, he increased the chances of his family's survival. Had he been found first he could have directed the rescuers back to the car and his family. By staying with the car, he wouldn't increase the chances that car, with his wife and kids, would be found. Under the circumstances, he did the most rational thing -- to protect his family. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I agree. I think "Outdated" or something like "Obsolete", is a good candidate.
- bmurph83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"Friends have concentrated their efforts in this area, even renting a helicopter to search..."
It sounds like there are some very determined people searching. I'm sure we all hope this turns out well. - dakboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12No, not just "in retrospect" should he have stayed with the car.
Anyone with "wilderness experience" as James is reported to have knows that rule #1 when you know you are lost is to STOP MOVING. The search area is at least 700 square miles around that car now (15 mile radius) I'd estimate. It's a lot easier for searchers to find a stationary target than a moving one.
Had he actually managed to get in contact with searchers, how would he have told them where the car was, other than "out in that direction, roughly" unless he had coordinates from a GPS with him or a handheld GPS breadcrumbing his hike? They would have only been able to narrow the search area - which is all the discovery of his car has done now.
I understand why he wanted to go out to find help, but his heart overrode his brain and it could turn out to be a very costly mistake. - lucid270, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I normally digg up the James Kim stories, but do we need a new bury option?
"This article is no longer pertinent/timely"
Since this was posted before Kati & kids were found. - akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8In case your not up to date.
http://news.com.com/1606-2_3-6140705.html?tag=cnetfd.mt - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7We digg. It's what we doo.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6After his family being found, I have hope.
Gotta commend the guy for being so brave to rescue his family, its a shame if the worst happened.... - fantasticjon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You have to remember he did stay with the car like 5 days. I would have been pretty tempted to go look for help too after 5 days. Also, It is likely one of his phones had GPS capability. I am sure he wrote the coordinates down. He was probably just going to go and try to get a cell signal from the top of a mountain, so he could text the coordinates..
- lucid270, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Last I heard was he... Left 2 days before Kati & kids were found. He planned to be gone at most 5 hours, but did not return. They found his tracks further down the road, apparently he took a detour off of the road and ventured down into the basin/valley area. They are trying to follow his tracks, have search and rescue teams looking all night, and have dogs comming in the morning.
- tdskate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8OMG, that's horrible! It's like, 39°F right now in Oregon City.. and he only has a jacket!
He should've stayed with the ***** car! - Navicerts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A reporter for cnet i think, tech guy. I wonder if he tried any tech solutions, I don't know much about the story but i assume he has a fare share of "gadgets". Maybe they should be scanning for signals that he might be sending out? Although, i guess his family would have known about that. Really hope he is found OK.
Oh, i would have left the car as well for those nay sayers. If your alone your chances are better if you stay put, with the vehicle. In his case he DID increase the chance of his families survival, while putting his own life in much greater peril, he did the right thing. - fluxion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4to dakboy:
one of the articles i read about the incident also mentioned another party of 6 that got stuck in the same area, snowbound in an RV for 16 days. they were rescued when 2 members of the party decided to hike down the mountain and find help. sometimes such risks pay off.
also, imagine you care about nothing more than your family being rescued. how does staying with your family increase the chances of them being rescued? all you'd be doing is eating their food, and reducing the amount of time they'll be able to sustain.
it makes sense then that, if you care only for your family, you'd hike out to find help. in doing so, the chances of them being rescued increase 2 fold, since you finding help, or help finding you some distance away, will also lead to their rescue. if they are rescued, but you are lost, they're still safe.
also, he knew what road they were on. this would've been of great help to rescuers in pinpointing the location - Bytor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dumb question, but was James Kim famous before getting lost? Everytime I hear this, I wonder, who is James Kim?
- tdskate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How much longer is it gonna take untill I see "James Kim found" on the digg homepage !?!?
- audioscience, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8It was that rented helicopter that spotted Kim and the kids.
I'm just wondering why this post made the front page because there is no new news here...
It isn't even from Monday when the mom and kids were found. No digg. - syco123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hope he's holed up somewhere. All the tech in the world wont keep you warm once your batteries freeze. If he has a good sense of what to do in the outdoors he is very much alive. If he kept walking and walking then his outlook is a little bleak.
If that's the case the answer to your question could well be late spring. - SimonDonkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm abusing the comment system but anyway:
"Wife, daughters of missing CNET editor James Kim are rescued"
http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9666094-1.html?subj=Crave&part=rss&tag=feed&tag=cnetfd.blog - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4As with anything else on Digg, if you aren't interested in a story, IGNORE IT AND MOVE ON! Is it really that great of an inconvenience having to see a headline you personally aren't interested in?
- drilldown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://news.com.com/CNET+editors+wife%2C+daughters+found+search+continues/2100-1028_3-6140676.html?tag=cnetfd.mt
Sadly, people will do the most irrational things to save "the family".
Know a person drowned in 6' of water having never been in the water in his life trying to save his kid. Kid doggy paddled to the shore. Kid's are lightweight and learn on the fly.
He'll get picked up on the road to somewhere. Just saying, he had the sense to make sure his family stayed with the car, umbrellas and all. I'm guessing that using the umbrella would be the wife's idea? Round up time on the digg ranch.
Flagging down a search helicopter with an umbrella for Christmas: Priceless. For all other things there's mastercard.
Really like to put this one to rest with a happy ending. It's the little things in life that cound for so much. - lucid270, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I have compassion, I did a search for "James Kim" and dugg up almost *all* of the upcomming stories on him. That is sadly all I can do, but luckily this search is comming to an end soon with better than expected results.
I apparently did not digg this story (and have not buried it) but I do feel that an out of date article on an continuing search that *will* generate many more stories is a waste of front page space. - WillyWonka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3He used to be on The ScreenSavers on techtv every so often.
- IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9why shud it be the "biggest" stories ever?
my neighbors son was lost for 3 weeks, it didnt make it to digg. - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We can only hope james watches the discovery channel.
- tdskate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So, has James allready been found?? I haven't seen any news on that yet...
If not, where did he go? - charmaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From what I have read, they took a "short cut" which is virtually impassable when it snows. Then, they took the wrong fork in a road, and tried to turn around and got stuck in the snow.
- The_Dude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is a bummer man.
I saw a survival show on cable about this situation. When the guy set out on foot in the show, he made mukluks (giant boots like the Eskimos) out of foam from the car seats. Wrapped them with car fabric. - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hope to god, were I ever in the situation, I would have the presence of mind to overcome what must be the most horrible feeling of helplessness.
We pray and hope and hold our breaths. - syco123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is sad, i feel it too but he died saving his family. He has my respect and he died with honor.
- syco123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's tip that might just save your life
When you go into the wilderness TELL PEOPLE WHERE YOU'RE GOING.
It's rule #1 when heading out into the backcountry. I'm a mountain leader and climbing instructor and very experienced outdoors. I have never gone into the wilds without telling someone or leaving a photocopy of my map and plans in my car.
I had a serious accident in the mountains of Japan while alone. I had the gear to survive the night at 9,000 feet in winter. I knew I'd be missed that evening and rescue was 20-40 hours away so I waited for help. I got lucky when someone heard my emergency whistle and helped me get off that night. He was one of 2 people on the mountain that day and was about 2 miles away when he heard it. So very lucky I suppose. If I had been missing 5 days I would have been located easily and well before that. I had left a plan with my girlfriend for what to do if I didn't show. I was in a ***** load of pain (concussion, 3 broken ribs ad a shattered arm) but I never worried I was going to be alone for very long.
That was in 1999 and I still always let people know where I'm going and have enough to get me through a worst case scenario. If you go into the back country, you should too. - robio376, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was just wondering if anybody has an idea of about how for they were from the road?
- seansshack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2doesn't look good....
- youngkim3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am very depressed at the news of his parting. His children especially would need our prayers as they would likely be so full of despair (later in life) upon learning of his fate despite his heroic efforts. This plays out like a serious drama, even a classic Greek tragedy.
- robio376, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They would have to be pretty sick in the head to risk their children's lives for the sake of getting a movie or book. Considering they own two stores and he has a good job.
- KCorax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1By now he is also presumed dead, so please be more tactful.
I listened to his podcast with V.Belmont on cnet, they were adorable. - robio376, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I meant "far" not "for".
- artgod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1ALWAYS! Stay with the car... sorry, but if he's found, it isn't going to be a warm reception.
- rynoon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2James Kim is Missing
Pearl Harbor
Cure for Polio
9/11
Would that be your preferred order? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6The poster is right. Linking every story on this isn't going to find the guy. A particular media outlet picking up the story isn't news either.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1If he is found alive, then I'll know this whole thing was staged by the family, planned out in advance all in order to sell a great movie/book deal to the studios.
That remark aside, I cannot believe they will find him alive now, but its great that the rest are safe. - Twindagger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0They have been found:
http://michellemalkin.com/archives/006482.htm - slickfire, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3come on you ***** this should be one of the biggest stories ever...show some ***** compassion.
- LinuxSucks, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1james kim is a noob
- IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -37/+11STOP PLEASE STOP.
We know he is lost, but linking every freaking news on him however how irrelavent will NOT help find him.
Being mentioned on Good Morning America is not like winning the Nobel Prize.

What is Digg?
