- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -5/+22competition is good.
- dillyhoo, on 11/13/2007, -0/+17Intensive investigation reveals the horrifying conclusion that a lot of companies like to copy successful business models.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -8/+23Billions of dollars in cash and the best they can come up with is a copy of flickr?
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -6/+19Why do you guys doubt them? Microsoft are well known to copy and improve on technologies. They might not be creative enough to come up with their own ideas, but when they base their new idea's on successful existing ones, then generally they do well. For example, .Net.
- noahhoward, on 11/13/2007, -2/+15Fair competition is good.
- VeganBob, on 11/13/2007, -1/+12This just in: Is [Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, or a group of companies] Building a [ some popular website or application in a niche market] Competitor?
- mlostracco, on 11/13/2007, -2/+12Except when powerful companies with bottomless bank accounts come late to the party and aggressively stifle it.
- Dokument, on 11/13/2007, -3/+13it should be nicknamed "*****"
- Ihavethespeed, on 11/13/2007, -0/+8I don't want your periods.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -6/+13You mean like Picasa?
"By the way...how bad do you think you look by already declaring it low quality based on nothing but a rumor that they MIGHT be creating it? Gee, no pathetic anti-MS bias there!) - haiduz, on 11/14/2007, -2/+8You can upload your pictures to online albums.
- lead2thehead, on 11/13/2007, -4/+9Microsoft is always trying to build a better (insert popular product here) instead of coming up with innovative ideas on their own. At Microsoft, R&D stands for "rob and duplicate".
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4You're right, it is a matter of personal opinion, and in my opinion, apart from poor portability, .Net is generally an improvement over Java in almost every aspect of development. I used to be one of those self proclaimed, purist, arrogant, ***** developers who stuck to C++, Java and whatever else sounded cool at the time, but put simply, .Net gets the job done. And at the end of the day thats all people want and care about.
I'm not trying to veer off topic, but I'm just illustrating that Microsoft don't screw up everything they attempt. - saggygrandma, on 11/13/2007, -1/+5how do you think they came up with the billions of cash dude, copying its how they make it...
they will copy flickr, then make the photo program in vista integrate with it so all the dumb users just start using their site instead, pretty much exactly the same as how IE7 has their live search integrated and all the e-tards just use that to search now. - Atomic1fire, on 11/13/2007, -2/+5except your dealing with yahoo NOT a startup
yahoo has hooks with phonecompanies like sbc
advertising and probably a few other sources of income to fight microsoft with - inactive, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3Weren't they building an Ipod kiler?
- roberto_deneero, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Hey, big and disorganized, just like the rest of M$.
- noahhoward, on 11/13/2007, -4/+6Copy, yes. Improve... examples? I don't know that .Net improved on anything. Thats a massive matter of opinion.
- Velnich, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2I'm sold as long as MS doesn't try to steal the rights to anything I upload (and sell it to some other company for their advertising needs).
- djbumunltd, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2if microsoft is able to integrate photosynth into it, then that would be enough of an improvement to make it a worthy competitor. if you don't know what i'm talking about, check it out here: http://labs.live.com/photosynth/
- roystgnr, on 11/13/2007, -1/+3Yes, but Microsoft's skill is in trying to undercut even unprofitable business models, before a potential future competitor can grow too large for MS to "cut off their air supply". Most companies enter new markets where they think they can make money, but people are wary that when Microsoft enters a market they may be intending to lose money in order to cause some rival to lose even more.
- xtc46, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2the term "improve" in it self is a matter of opinion...
- chriskeyes, on 11/13/2007, -2/+3What the heck? MSN Live? Seriously.
Maybe you ought to do more research, or at least know what your talking about, before putting such a criticizing comment up.
I think you're referring to "Windows Live Photo Gallery" (or I call it Live Photo Gallery), and it's a photo editing software. I find it quite nifty, and it does 2 main awesome things : 1) Flickr upload. and 2) panoramic stitching of photos.
I doubt it's a lame copy of anything. It works awesome. Even an amateur can really tweak photos and come up with something impressive-like. - americanistsam, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Microsoft !!!!
I wont use it - akeema, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1they could by these guys. http://www.globaledit.com/ge/
At this point though how much more do really want to do or see with photos? - r3zonance, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1WTF, Firewire....why?
- srg13, on 11/13/2007, -1/+2No, Microsoft bought (or licensed, can't remember) Mosaic so they could compete (crush) with Netscape...
Just like they do with most other things - they're like a plague - bradbelan, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1In the web space Microsoft has many examples of ideas they've tried to rip-off/copy and no examples where they've succeeded (e.g. Search/Google, Video/YouTube, Spaces/MySpace, etc, etc, etc. Microsoft's just plain old lame when it comes to online, they can't even copy well like they do to Apple and others in the desktop space. Google, Flickr, et. al. have nothing to worry about in the online world because MS doesn't get the web - the only things MS really cares about are Windows and Office.
- prammy, on 11/14/2007, -1/+2Actually with the amount of photos I share, $24 would be too much and the free version suits me just fine. If I start publishing more photos, then $24 is a very reasonable amount for what they offer.
- my10cent, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Why would you pay for flickr when Picasa is free? unlimited albums, it doesnt make sense, Flickr is dead and has been dead for a while.
- Dygear, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1It does not matter, it's going to suck.
- prammy, on 11/13/2007, -1/+2Copied IE from Apple? Are you serious? Can you specify from WHAT Apple product they copied IE from?
IE was the default browser on MacOS since 9, OS 8.x used netscape. Apple released Safari AFTER IE6 was released.
The tabbed browsing first showed up on Opera AFAIK, not Safari. - luchid, on 11/13/2007, -1/+2And they already have MSN spaces for photosharing. They seem to be too big and disorganized.
- kd1s, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Even if they do create it I won't use it. You just know they'll completely laden the thing with copyright protection, and other goodies that will make it damned near impossible to upload any photos or videos except those they put their stamp of approval on.
- millersteve, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1yea, that's exactly right. "creativity" is simply building off of already established ideas. But, i don't know if this will work out. Flickr is an established web community right? Kind of like myspace or facebook, its success depends on the users of the site. Why would people leave flickr to go to microsoft? if they are able to compete with Flickr, it'll take some time, and some neat add-ons to the site, which is where the billions of dollars comes in. The creativity to build on the Flickr idea.
- roberto_deneero, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1iPod, GarageBand, iPhoto, iDVD, iMac, Mac/PC ads, and on and on.....
- HairyPoter, on 11/13/2007, -2/+3Xerox invented the photocopier. Microsoft showed how to use it.
- roberto_deneero, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Um, IE was force fed down the lemmings throats from day 1, that's how it got used. They forced you to use it and they did it early on. Nobody will use anything M$ after they're already using superior services like Flickr, Digg, etc.
- sammykeyes, on 11/14/2007, -1/+2Have you even used Live Search?
And Blogger is the place for Blog Spam!
Have you tried Office Live to Google Docs?
Exactly. - roberto_deneero, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1No.
- roberto_deneero, on 11/13/2007, -1/+2Correction: Apple
- luchid, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Actually blogger has a higher legit vs. spam ratio than spaces. It is also a superior blogging platform. Office Live sucks so much I didn't even get past the hour and a half i spent trying it.
- CrimsonBlur, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Because Flickr is way, way better than Picasa Web Albums. The difference between Picasa and Flickr is like Geocities and a professional Website. Most people have a free Flickr account and never run out of room anyway. If you really take so many pictures that you need unlimited space and huge amounts of uploads, it's worth it to pay for a Flickr Pro account instead of using Picasa just because it is free. I am however looking forward to some real competition from MS though, Flickr hasn't been adding new features for quite a while now, but to say Flickr is dead is totally false.
- soopafly, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Ooooo..me too, me too!!!!
- stutimandal, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1How come nobody talks of Picasa or Google Photos? I found it extremely extremely convenient to use, when compared with Flickr, yahoo photos, Kodak easy share, and so on.
It's just not in news, due to some strange reason .... - CrimsonBlur, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1The comment system is fine, just because lots of people use it to gush over photos is irrelevant. Why would you not include a comment system in a community-based photo site? The entire point of Flickr and sites like it is that it's not just a personal photo album, it's a community.
- CarbideTipped, on 11/13/2007, -0/+0Microsoft: Day late dollar shor...never mind.
- 1digga, on 11/13/2007, -0/+0there are lots of other sites that host pictures to share one of them is www.eyetotheworld.com now microsoft should concentrate on improving its windows not competing against flickr or come up with something thats unique thats not out there yet
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -1/+1YOU......................... SUCK..................... ROCKS!!
- luchid, on 11/14/2007, -1/+1That would be Picasa Web Albums, not Picasa itself.
