  • benologist, on 06/13/2008, -18/+612I would be surprised if Google really wants to shell out a huge amount of money for Digg. I'm just not seeing the value in a community addicted to funny pics/vids that vocally despises almost everything including each other.

    I could see Fark wanting to buy digg because they'd finally fill that position they've had open forever for someone with design talent, or maybe 4chan just to formalise their ownership of the site, but I really can't see Google buying digg and especially not to fix Google News. That just doesn't make sense. If Google wanted to try their hand at social news they'd probably start by adding vote, bury and submit links rather than buying a fickle community that prefers to get their news from the blog equivelent of tabloids.

    Anyways, before you digg me down, please remember we diggers don't care if all your family members work for digg; if they do, good for them. They should consider themselves lucky to be working for digg.

    Please don't always brag about your boyfriend working for digg, it's kinda getting sick.

    What we all diggers are concerned about, is the future of this great social bookmarking heaven.

With this in mind I question Google's ability to manage the community. Digg is already kinda unruly, and has it's fair share of community troubles. People here can turn on you pretty quickly.

    Look at flickr. How long does it take you to realize it is owned by yahoo? If it is not obvious at first it is very obvious the moment you sign up.
    Now lets look at youtube. How obvious is it that it is owned by google? There is ONLY ONE sentence on their company history page about it. That is just unheard of for a company. Normal companies are very big on branding and want to get their name out there.
