Is Gmail Starting to Give 15 Gigs?
googlesystem.blogspot.com — Some users of Google Apps for Your Domain report that their Gmail accounts have 15 GB of storage space. There are at least two people who noticed it, so it's hard to consider this a mistake.
- 896 diggs
- digg it
- bombadier337, on 10/12/2007, -17/+11I'm still at 2779mb, but I've got my fingers crossed.
- ardenr, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1Is anyone else noticing the THREE tabs beside the gMail tab? Don't hold your breath people, haha.
edit: re: screenshot below (wrong place) - terinjokes, on 10/12/2007, -16/+42048MB here. Hrm, i'm used to being invited to these things first, guess it's time to let others go first ;-)
- pjsk8, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Does anyone here think it's weird that this guy has EXACTLY 15 gigs?
- shaolinpunks, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5i've also got 2779 MB
- xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26umm, kinda useless if the max attach size is 10 mb isn't it?
- cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This story isn't accurate anymore, the storage seems to have been reversed:
http://www.digg.com/tech_news/GMail_s_15GB_of_storage_REVERSED - herculez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I don't have 15 gigs, but I just noticed I now have 50 invitations to give out... and if I give them all to myself, that makes 100 gigs!
- 0o0Moylan0o0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12779, not expecting anything though i was happy with 1gb, its not like i'll ever use that much, ive left all my emails there for the past year (352), and ive only used 53 Mb
- WhispSil, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Could that be a preparation for GDrive or platypus or whatever ?
- ardenr, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1Is anyone else noticing the THREE tabs beside the gMail tab? Don't hold your breath people, haha.
- MattJF317, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Note: Apparently it's only Google Apps for Your Domain
That doesn't include Gmail right now, but hopefully it will
Here's a screenshot that someone posted http://static.flickr.com/108/283808076_6f808a498b_o.png- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -30/+5uhhhhhhh he used netscape!
- kcolagio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+60
Hmmm...and he didn't block out his e-mail address...not the sharpest knife in the drawer.... - Reidtheweed01, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Ronald Lewis ALSO plays basketball for The Ohio State Univeristy.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3I don't understand why people don't just move the buttons from their tool bar onto one unifying bar to save space. I'd hate having all those toolbars taking up viewing room.
- GreenLantern33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Why does this guy have 16 drafts? Who has 16 drafts?
Maybe I should email him, since he didn't block out his email address, and ask him. - ardenr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Ok since 5 hours have passed I'm gonna spell out the obvious... It's Halloween, and there's 3 trick or treat tabs right beside it in the screencap. I'm guessing... trick. Hey, I could be wrong, two people have noticed!
- Fenrok, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4the screenshot says 205 MB is 1% of 15 gigs
omg new math - habilus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Use firefox like this...
http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=waytousefirefoxvp0.jpg
:-) - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"no it is not netscape it is FIREFOX! duh!"
Look at one of the Tabs. it links to Netscape's website - RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It doesn't bother me to share my e-mail address with the public. I enjoy engaging and connecting with new people.
- arjie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@Greenlantern33:
Sometimes you start replying to a message and then cancel that reply, except that it's been auto-saved, then that goes into drafts.
- ml7667, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12jeez, how big are their servers?
- EztliNahua, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Most people won't use anywhere near this amount of space, so they could give 1000 users 2GB each for a total of 2000GB, even if they only had 500GB available.
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12In the world of internet services the only way to survive is to oversell these days.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2He's not the sharpest cookie in the colouring truck.
EDIT: Damn. That was supposed to be posted somewhere else. Oh well.
- erimar77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36it's easy to give 15GB, they're just banking on the fact 98% of users won't need that much space..
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2exactly. I have gobs and gobs of mail (I don't get attachments too often, and they are usually under 15 megs).
You are currently using 207 MB (7%) of your 2779 MB. - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2especially when you have to fill it in 10mb files per email
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2exactly. I have gobs and gobs of mail (I don't get attachments too often, and they are usually under 15 megs).
- mwhitney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I definitely believe it, but two people noticing it doesn't mean it's not a mistake.
- glafira, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2Clickity Clank Clickity Clank The Space is in My Gmail Account
ding ding ding ding More Space More Space
ding ding ding ding More Space More Space
50 cent - ers35, on 10/12/2007, -12/+119Confirmed, mine says it too:
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/3293/screenhunter1zj6.jpg- striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7i literally LOLed
- PhantomZmoove, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I'm like "what could be so funny" till I clicked it. I almost spit pop on my monitor when I saw that image. Good stuff.
- andrewpate, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3LOL. I'm sure nobody will read this comment. But I just want to say. That is pure gold.
Freakin Hilarious.
- ziki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31...what would I do with 15gb of email space. My only thoughts would be transferring movies or games, illegally.
- Daedalus17, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7It has a cap on the size of attachments you can add. So unless you are willing to chop up your movies into dozens of pieces then Gmail is pretty much useless for what you are talking about.
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I love your addition of the word illegally, like you wouldn't want to email large videos that you had made yourself to anyone.
- coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@Daedalus
ummm...GSpace
that nice little firefox extension could make use of all the space most certainly
- Nitron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'm still at 2GB with Gmail for Domains.
- smhill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Ditto. Gmail for Domains (GoogleAps) still reads 2048 on mine.
- puggy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I have this friend, Bob Sacamano. Well, he needs more than 15GB.
- bhasadu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1is he wants run his PC through GMail?!! :P
- jferrari, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Maybe it has something todo with introducing GDrive??
- Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"There are at least two people who noticed it, so it's hard to consider this a mistake."
So two people noticing something automatically makes it not a mistake? - jdubyah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Checked one of my Google Apps for Your Domain accounts and it is still at 2 Gig.
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -17/+1I was quite happy with 1mb.
- bluemist, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5It would be useless with their 10mb limit on attachments.
Even their current 2gig is IMO worthless with that small upload limit. - Punk27, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Gmail just went down for me.
- ewithrow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Same here, here's hoping to an update.
- jorhyne1, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7Two people! Thats like everyone that uses gmail!
/sarcasm - lbytesxk, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Any news on when Gmail is coming out of beta? Or it's gonna be beta forever?
- CowTipper, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3gmail is down for me also
- BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Jebus Crikey, that's a lot of storage space for e-mail. But I guess it comes in handy if you want to attach a PDF containing all human knowledge to that e-mail about the funny things your cat does.
Why not give out 20gb? How about 150gb? 2tb? Hell, they could make it say anything they want it to; nobody's going to come even close to filling it. :)- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Um, yes they can. I don't want to know what they'd fill it with (music & pr0n?) but I'm sure they can.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1gmail has been resisting allowing IMAP access (POP and web only right now) because it could turn the account into a general purpose storage system. Plus IMAP is rather slow at going through lots of messages.
It would be amusing to write a Linux filesystem driver for FS-over-IMAP though.
- cbrad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1wow, two people. it must be legit then.
and most people dont need 15 gigs of space for email.. unless they're using it for storing stuff :/- Cinder6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Interestingly, most people use hard drive space for storing things.
- carrotopp13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2gmail is already greater than 2GB... my account is reading at 2779MB
- soretito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I have gmail for domains and Im still at 2gb (18% used)
- ebola, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1What does it matter anyway? It's down quite often. I have two gmail accounts, registered at different countries, and they both go down every now and then. This was from half an hour ago.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/23601011@N00/284170149/
I'd rather have just 2-3 gigs and uptime, as opposed to 15 gigs and much downtime.
Never had any downtime with yahoo mail yet. - maxdamage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have this, gmail for domain, and all of my accounts are still at the standard 2+gb. Both manager and user accounts.
- mdawg0916, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I have 2+ GB. Waiting on 15 GB.
- CharlieInCO, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22779 for me.
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"Server Error
Gmail is temporarily unavailable. Cross your fingers and try again in a few minutes. We're sorry for the inconvenience."
I hope they're rolling the 15GB in. - camster91, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2it back up still same size
- DM01, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1You are currently using 9 MB (0%) of your 2779 MB.
- Smily, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I have a terabyte:
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/272/gmail1tbsg7.png
:) - miraclebaby, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3this is a crack-up -- i'm one of the 2 people who noticed. Everybody in my domain now has 15 GB. We also have 25 accounts now, instead of the original ten. Right now I'm currently using 78 MB (1%) of my 15360 MB.
- JrGhoull, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0u know i'm using gmail and liking it, but i'm also having problems with it....e mails sent to it from comcast for example are delayed for up to a half hour sometimes...and also on a rare occassion or two the emails i've sent from g mail have been delayed for believe it or not a few days...anyone else havin these problems?
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2this is not the place for such a discussion. perhaps you could email the admin staff at gmail instead?
- otatop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I believe Senator Ted Stevens was having a similar problem. You may want to check that your tubes aren't clogged.
- RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2FYI: I am the blogger referenced in the googlesystem story ... and originally submitted this to digg here: http://digg.com/tech_news/Trick_or_Treat_Google_Apps_Mail_Now_At_15_GB

What slays me is how I worked my ass off to get my OWN story noticed today (hence the blog pickups and this thread), only to have my own Digg article ignored. Go figure. - tomi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ahem, two words: Blog spam. Most diggers don't like it, can't do much to change their minds. *shrug*
- RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Tomi,
And I don't like it when other digg users benefit from my own hard work -- hence why this Digg thread even exists. It's a "slap in the face" to see my OWN submission ignored, only to see it resurface via a "popular" user and secondary source. Afterall, it is MY blog entry and HARD WORK which started this circus of discussion within the blogosphere to begin with.
If I sound pissed, you're right -- I am. Put yourself in MY shoes, and you'll understand.
