- sloppychris, on 11/02/2008, -0/+33I'm still blown away at how powerful wikipedia is.

I've successfully divided by zero!!! Everybody run for your lives!!! - Jones82, on 11/03/2008, -0/+8Wikipedia today is more useful than the entire Internet was in the late 90s
- PrintScrn12, on 11/03/2008, -0/+8A lot of stuff that is critical is wiped off for the purposes of maintaining a Neutral Point of View.

Well I can't say I mourn your lack of participation in the wiki- community. - inactive, on 11/02/2008, -0/+6Wikipedia almost always has refs and links, use them. That's what they're there for.
- PrintScrn12, on 11/03/2008, -0/+6Open source software is a pretty good example of Internet collaboration that isn't in it's infancy.
- stack3r, on 11/03/2008, -0/+6Hah,
Australia is being forced into internet censorship, thus wikipedia will probably be censored to. :(
I guess uncensored free collaboration of people around the world is bad for governments. - davecachia, on 11/02/2008, -0/+5Your Prof is a moron teaching morons. If you CITE wikipedia --> you're a moron.
Wikipedia is AWESOME. Some stuff on there has citations, and you can click the links that back up the information and cite that :P
Gees. - Nightenglow, on 11/03/2008, -0/+4Digital democracy for net neutrality. Then we could start building
- cadmiumpaint, on 11/03/2008, -2/+5the only downfall is that its not always accurate and sometimes its just flat out wrong. But i agree the amazing ease of being able to find instant information on just about anything is pretty amazing.
- flessa, on 11/03/2008, -0/+3i remember when there were rumors about a year ago that wikimedia would be out of money in a matter of months.
..well it hasnt died and it seems to me like the resource is too powerful to die. when there is demand, no matter what the content is, it will find a way to live. if wikipedia did loose its ad-free status id be disappointed, but i would understand their motives. google donates a healthy amount of server space and bandwidth to them which is all nice and good, but i hope they remain separate entities. google = for profit, wikimedia = nonprofit foundation. - askantik, on 11/03/2008, -0/+3A lot of professors/teachers criticize Wikipedia, and while I wouldn't use it in a scientific paper, I certainly use it as a starting point. The good articles on Wikipedia have reliable and decent citations. Smaller, less popular articles are not always as accurate, but that's to be expected. At any rate, Wikipedia's price (uh, free), accessibility, and high rate of accuracy on most of the stuff I look up is a win-win.
- schnikies79, on 11/02/2008, -0/+3Wiki is a starting point, not a source. No encyclopedia is a source, even the ones with a spine.
davecachia is exactly right. - DjManner, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2Encyclopedia Dramatica is also pretty collaborative, technically speaking :
- Nightenglow, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2A little bit
- Kovalchuk71, on 11/03/2008, -2/+4So much for teachers not accepting wikipedia as a "credible source" for university papers. I use all the info I can get on wikipedia and give all the references at the bottom of the wiki page as my sources.
What now bitches? - sfacets, on 11/03/2008, -2/+3Also it comes with a whole cabal of admins which just make it suck for the rest of us.
- askantik, on 11/03/2008, -1/+2Amen, brother. They think they're so smart, and then we pwn the ***** out of 'em.

- HonestAbe, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1Wikipedia is based on a great idea, but Wales' particular incarnation is pretty poor. I can't wait for competitors to spring up. Then maybe we'll see some actual innovation in the user interface and a "community" that doesn't resemble Lord of the Flies.
- abbathdoom, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1If anyone is looking for a new project to get involved with, Openstreetmap is a project to make a free (as in speech) map of the entire world that anyone is free to use and modify (unlike Google's map that is only free as in beer). It has already mapped a huge amount of the world with only a small team of dedicated people so if more people got involved it won't be long before the whole planet is mapped.
www.openstreetmap.org - HonestAbe, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1I don't know why you're being buried.
- peterinjapan, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1One site that I've gotten into recently is tadalist.com, basically a shareable online list of things you need to do. Works great in any browser or on iPhone. I've banished my little notebook!
- PrintScrn12, on 11/03/2008, -2/+2It's an encyclopedia. They don't epitomise accuracy whether they are on paper or digital.
- thereisnostate, on 11/03/2008, -2/+2It's good for technical and science based information but not so much for political information. For example, anything critical of Israel is wiped off the site.
- Idgit, on 11/03/2008, -1/+1"If you type 'Google', into Google, you can break the internet, so please, no one try it, even for a joke."
The funny thing is I used wikiquote to look up that quote. - inactive, on 11/03/2008, -1/+0Actually i'm not in america so no morons here. Sorry, but you FAIL kiddo.
- cadmiumpaint, on 11/03/2008, -2/+1i agree that web 3.0 or whatever it will be will open up information a lot more than it is now. We're using video conferencing in my office for clients on the other side of the globe.
however i must say working in a creative environment, collaboration has limits. The internet cannot always replace the chemistry of people working in an office together on a project. The common focus and team spirit from physically being in the same space together helps projects go smoothly. If one of my team members was virtual it would be harder to get things done. People by nature work better in physical groups than as individuals. We know what each member can do and we are able to adjust and go with the flow of the project a lot easier than if we were all spread out all over the country or world.
I don't think my workflow or projects would move any faster if i had teammates in different physical spaces that i only interacted with via internet. I think it would actually slow things down. - RomeLeader, on 11/02/2008, -3/+1Agreed about the whole amazing impact of Wikipedia. But see, that's the power of Web 2.0. The more power in the hands of the community, the greater the chances of succeeding greatly, or failing miserably, yes, but once it gets off the ground, you can amass a lot of influence through very little work.
People trust people, simple as. I find the whole concept amazing. - brothaa, on 11/03/2008, -3/+1Thom Yorke?

- dkerns, on 11/02/2008, -7/+0We are quickly moving to a virtual connection. What could not be conceived 100 years ago will soon be a reality. The next leap in humanity will evolve into the spiritual connection in only a few years :-).
