- blankoboy, on 05/06/2008, -4/+32Not sure why Japan isn't on this list. I've had IPTV with my 100MB (up and down) FTTH for the last ~4 years. The US populace needs to get their corrupt government and telecoms fixed up and get things moving over there to get out of the Internet stone age.
- chanop, on 05/06/2008, -2/+23we're still trying to figure out the metric system
- blankoboy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+17I always hear the "US is much more spread out" excuse thrown around but this doesn't hold water as all the major city centers just as densely populated. There is no reason why these urban hubs could not be wired up and run the same way as Japan and other countries with true "high speed" internet, were it not for the government and telco corruption.
- Bobaliki, on 05/06/2008, -6/+20Dammit why are Scandinavians on the top of every type of list!
- blankoboy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+13........also with no download caps and IP Telephony services for ~$45/month. =)
- Pzycho, on 05/06/2008, -6/+17Not everything has to do with corruption. The US is a bit more spread out than a place like Japan, and that makes a big difference.
- GiggleStick, on 05/06/2008, -1/+10Are you aware of the verb "to be". You had 2 opportunities to use it, and did not. Makes you sound like a caveman. Are you a caveman?
- Zaggy111, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9I have HD IPTV :) (Croatia)
- delta013, on 05/06/2008, -2/+8100MB? I hate you...
- coudboule, on 05/06/2008, -2/+6France alone accounts for 40%. Triple play service (which includes internet broadband, phone and television and costs around €30 a month) is very popular there. One ISP even offers its subscribers their own television channel that can be viewed directly on a television.
- gurm, on 05/06/2008, -1/+5Yes, there are a lot of stuff you can watch on the internet, but the article/image is about television over internet, IPTV, not stuff you can watch in a browser by connecting to an ISP. You get a digital receiver and connect it to your router and your TV and you're channel surfing as seamlessly as using any other type of TV reception. It's fairly cheap and you get excellent clarity, perfect for HD viewing.
And I'm Icelandic and can verify those numbers, about every 4th household has IPTV here. - itsfullofstars, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4Because they're not caught up in ridiculous money wasting wars and concentrate their countries tax revenue on infrastructure, among other things. Americas current direction is ALL WRONG.
- oreo2123, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4what else is there to do in Scandinavia?
I'd hate to see my personal internet usage if I lived there - I'd prolly make it past porn and digg...eventually. - gislib, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3I live in Iceland and as it stands now, only one of the three major broadband providers are offering IPTV, with a second provider finishing tests of their IPTV system. Once the second provider starts offering IPTV, Iceland will go straight to the top of that list.
- priegog, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3I agree, but corruption, alongside stupid laws and anticompetitive practices would be something like 98% of the blame. Size and population is a pretty common excuse for these kinds of things (and some others like healthcare), but the reality is that economy does scale and there isn't a reason why the US couldn't have a fiber optic running to every house.
- Mr8lack, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3I watch everything online. We have a projector for games & movies and got rid of the tv about 6 months ago... who likes sitting through 20 minutes of commercials each hour?
- Grumps, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3We're yet again missing from the list. Pioneer of the internet.
- threetoedkoala, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1some might say they have it all!
- kowalzki, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Was ist das? Why is it any better than the cable? Anybody, pleasw?
- diggadigga, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1If we could make this work in America, it would be an epic blow to the powerful conglomerates. It would make an 'open source' TV possible; any organization could have a channel.
This would result in the writers and actual creators of TV shows (no more unsatisfied writers) get more pay for their work, instead of the money going to the big network executives. Also, more alternatives to the media. The old media is so corrupt, so incompetent, it would be very easy for competition to blow them out of the water. - Genghis1, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I have IPTV through ATT U-verse. It's cheap and works great. I live in Illinois.
Much better than Charter cable. - Culyt, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Is there much in the way of international IPTV providers? The only Australian offering is from TPG and there mostly just free channels like NASA-TV, 6 Chinese channels and a PlayboyAdvertising channel.
- sl9sl9, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2BT Vision is an IPTV product, you insensitive clod! It combines both IPTV (4oD's service) and DVB-T (Freeview).
- priegog, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2I agree, but I think there is a portion of the population (which would coincide with digg users probably) who couldn't care less for sporting events. Or big brother. There are certain things that need to be watched live (presidential debates and whatnot) and on those occations I watch OTA TV. I was also not proposing bittorrent as a substitute for normal TV (altho it makes a pretty damn good one), I was just saying what works for me.
- vcuares, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1HD quality sucks too, but then again it is STILL IPTV.
- widgetmaker, on 05/06/2008, -4/+5rtfa, they aren't
- Doitdifferently, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2This comment will likely get dugg down for not being relevant but oh well.
I have to say if I could move to Iceland I would. I swear the more I hear about that place the more awesome it sounds, even though the government style seems odd to me. Too bad Icelandic is such a bitch to learn and there are only 5 people in the US who teach it :( - gurm, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Language shouldn't really be the main factor when deciding on whether you should move to another country or not, and especially not with a country like Iceland where, although the native tongue is a bitch to learn, almost everyone speaks English.
- Branbot, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Oh wrong article...Nevermind.
- plamoni, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I have U-verse, too (in St. Louis, MO)... It's still a "work in progress"... but they're making it better all the time...
cookie: New subscribers and some current subscribers in St. Louis are getting 2 HD streams now...
vcuares: The HD quality is pretty good in my experience. Not quite as good as OTA, but certainly good enough. Plus the SD quality is really good... better than my cable was... - robbiemuffin, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2one of the better grammar-nazi comments I've read in a long time :)
- tauntz, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I guess he also counted Estonia - that's basically scandinavia..
- ahac, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I guess one reason for iptv popularity in come countries is that many people don't have access to cable tv.
On the other hand... if people can choose from ftth, dsl and cable (all offering phone, tv and internet) then this forces the companies to compete and offer better (more channels, vod, etc) and cheaper service... which ofc means that more people will use it. - xavier2010, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1thats a pretty F&cking sweet quote tho
- blackgt93, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1We've got FTTP here in our neighborhood (and IPTV) but nowhere NEAR 100Mb, more like 1.5Mb...
BOOOOO!!!!!!!! - ryanknapper, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1He's an American. Of course he doesn't know where in Australia they keep Scandinavia.
- priegog, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but that's not the case with france. It's full-blown cable coming via the ADSL line.
- dstz, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1"France alone accounts for 40%. Triple play service (which includes internet broadband, phone and television and costs around €30 a month) is very popular there. We don't have Google but we have Iliad-FreeTelecom. God bless. - Branbot, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1SPACE EVERYWHERE!!!11?? Run guys ruuuun! It's in my shower! ***** RUN!
- BOFH2, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1My sister has it. Works well if only 2 tvs are going on non HD signals - My mom is in the apt downstairs so if she is watching tv and my sister is some of the HD stuff pixelates
- jhandfield, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1[citation needed]
- akilleen, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Oh shut up, we know it is near South Africa.
- itsfullofstars, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Whatever happened to good old American innovation?? Being the best and first?? This is and should be a major embarrassment to the USA.
Shame. - OaklandNative, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1you also have the best nude beach ever, packed with beautiful women (links SFW):

I hate you - coudboule, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Yet there are still some cases where Bittorent has not caught up with a good ol' tv, like live sport events. Even if some solutions exist, they suck for the most part.
- iloveliberals, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0Good old America invented the internets. Not innovative enough for ya?
How about GPS? The American military created that, and continues to offer that service, free, to the world. - xyqxyq, on 05/06/2008, -2/+2They are given most of their spots by intimidating the list author with vikings.
- jhandfield, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0Off the top of my head, I'd suspect that the major cross-country lines couldn't handle the average person wielding a 100Mbps connection. And you know that there would be outraged articles all over the Web from people arguing that [provider] is ripping them off since their download speed to [website] isn't a full 100Mbps.
- inactive, on 05/06/2008, -4/+4Gee...paying for HDTV....when it's offered for free..I might think "How Progressive!".
" - dlk289, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0It's about curruption and greed. Why would any telecom company want to put down fiber optic cable? they can charge 20-60 for a lan phone, 20-60 for internet, and then another 20-50 for cable TV. This is why the telecom companies hate vonage. If they have faster internet someone will make a vonage-like TV distribution system losing them money.
