Solution: Don't buy Viiv PCs. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is the same vision of interactive advertising that's been tossed around since the early dot-com days. It's not suprising that Omnicom would be involved, since they funded a lot of the early interactive agencies like Razorfish, Agency, and Organic.
I know people think targeted commercials will be less intrusive, but I see them as a way to further isolate people from society. If you never see any ads except the ones that are aimed directly at your personal lifestyle, that's one more step towards the little cocoon where yours is the only perspective you ever see.
We already have the option to hear just the political viewpoint we prefer, shop at stores with only our cultural peers around us, and spend our time on websites with thousands of people whose viewpoint we agree with. Now we can make sure our TV commercials have tunnel vision, too. - aarons44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sorry Intel, this really isn't all that new. With Time Warner digital cable, ads today are interactive. Some ads display a box that says "Push Button B On Your Remote For More Information". Push the button, and that's just what you get. More information.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I spent the summer of '88 in the Soviet Union - and the first thing that struck me was the lack of advertising. No billboards, no bus ads, no banners on the subway.
It was nice, actually.
Now how did they manage to have no advertising anywhere? Hmm.
Oh yeah. They didn't have any capitalism, either.
Like it or not, we do need advertising. - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4it would be much better if everyone just had some "interests" list. i own my car and will never finance, so don't show me car commercials. i don't own a home, so don't show me mortgage commercials. i don't drink light beer, so don't show me light beer commercials. i don't pay for porn so don't show me girls gone wild commercials. i'm not fat and my apartment has a gym, so don't show me weight loss/exercise machine commercials. i'm not sick, so don't show me medicine commercials. i'm content with my cellular/telephone/cable providers so don't show me those commercials. i love my new cell phone (i had to import it from china bc american phones suck), so stop showing me them.
rather than interesting me in any of these things, it just pisses me off when i have to sit through this *****, so i look badly at almost all advertisements. they're doing a good job at not making sales off of me. - thunderball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2could you imagine a day without ads?
- krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2while i'm not without ads, i'm pretty damn close... mythtv autoskips commercials. and between adblock and mikes host file, the interweb is pretty damn clean.
- heptahedron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It sounds likes its time to disable Flash on the set-top-box/Media PC. I'm amazed at how many web ads go away when Flash is disabled.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2 Oh, I can hardly wait! :>P
- Burritovision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you will be fired.
advertising is an illegal lein on efficiency. - TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yup same in the UK, except generally you press the button and you can play a little game or something to draw you in.
- FFpixel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm probably going to go ahead and interact with these ads when they come out...
You know, the same as the ones on the web now... *Skip/Close*
Another brilliant scheme to help piss people off. - Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about ads for feminine hygiene products? I'm watching some TV while I'm eating my dinner.. that is the last thing I want to see on my TV.
- ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Didn't TIVO already try this and showed that consumers hated it?
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3You forgot "Click the button to get a free rington" in all caps.
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Fantastic! I haven't got enough advertising in my life, please pump by brain with more consumerism!
- h2m3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Does it strike anyone else that Omnicom Media Group's initials are OMG?
"OMG ads!" - Matt-lars, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh joy, only a matter of time before telescreens.
- h2m3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'd click it.
