- Rizoh, on 08/25/2008, -1/+45Great, but they need to speed it up already. I'll probably be too old to savor the experience in 2050.
- thedsack, on 08/25/2008, -2/+33Transformers, Wi-Fi in disguise!
- irfanmp, on 08/25/2008, -5/+36They can try all they want but they can never accomplish anything without the AllSpark.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -2/+14Great if it comes with Megan Fox
- camino262, on 08/25/2008, -0/+10I think they mean power by electromagnetic energy. Anyone can light up a light bulb with a 4 watt hand-held radio. To do this, solder 2 wires 1/4 of the radio's operating frequency to the bulb's contacts. This makes a 1/2 wave dipole antenna with the bulb in the middle. Make sure you align the polarization of the two antennas, and transmit with the radio. The bulb will light up with the RF energy captured by the antenna you built.
- jsmith39, on 08/26/2008, -3/+13Aside from making it incredibly boring to watch them interact you mean?
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -2/+11AllSpark. That should be the name of Allstate's sister company.
- jamin, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9According to many of the Singularitarians, by 2050 we'll be able to reverse aging, making us all young again and able to live virtually forever. Just don't get hit by a bus!
Or we may just abandon our biological bodies altogether, either by replacing them bit-by-bit with nanotechnology that's more efficient..or by uploading our consciousness into a different substrate.
So maybe you don't have to worry too much about being too old. - Ragarnok, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9It really won't matter how old you are when your brain will be floating in a jar :D
- BXRWXR, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8Nice try.
- SEANWOOKIE, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7But. but I want a robot friend.
- TheHardDisk, on 08/26/2008, -0/+7I hope my model doesn't come with Shia LeBeouf , no no no no no no no.
- synystar, on 08/25/2008, -3/+9"There is speculation that we may be approaching an inflection point where the rate of technology advancements is accelerating at an exponential rate, and machines could even overtake humans in their ability to reason in the not-so-distant future."
Uh ok, so we have a chance to stop it now. Skynet, the Matrix, ....they need not ever exist. - chrisduser, on 08/26/2008, -0/+5and, and my android wife and children.
- Enigmocracy, on 08/26/2008, -0/+5I think that people are too resistant to weird things like this for it to happen so soon. I mean, we're already encountering resistance with Stem cell research, I expect the "It doesn't feel right" camp will be even more so with this new stuff.
- Dotcommer, on 08/26/2008, -0/+5Ghost in the shell! YES!
- MattNF, on 08/26/2008, -0/+4How do you know you're not living in the Matrix right now?
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -3/+7i call dibs on the optimus prime edition
- synystar, on 08/26/2008, -0/+4It's impossible to know that we are not, but I doubt that the Architect would have ever programmed a movie that explains everything into the.... ohhh. *****.
- passiveconsumer, on 08/26/2008, -0/+3"Wireless power? That's so 100 years ago", says Nikola Tesla.
- JoeHammer, on 08/26/2008, -0/+3Screenshots or it didn't happen.
- DeathGod321, on 08/26/2008, -0/+3What part of "millions of miniature robots, called catoms, so they could function as shape-shifting swarms" sounds like a good idea? Is there a scifi story in existance that has a good ending involving swarm robots?
- jumboshrimp11, on 08/26/2008, -1/+4To be honest, I would be completely fine with living in the Matrix...
- Dracusis, on 08/26/2008, -0/+3They sound more like replicators than transformers.
Million of tiny little robots that can form any shape ~and~ out think a human.
We're so *****. Don't these people watch Stargate? - RogerBlogger, on 08/25/2008, -1/+3This is amazing! Would have been even more amazing with some video of the catoms at work...
- handheldchimp, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2So, now we know who to blame when robots take over.
- synystar, on 08/26/2008, -1/+3There is still pain and suffering within the Matrix. Otherwise it would be too perfect. We would never accept the program and entire crops would be lost. Your life would be no different than it is now. Except that it wouldn't be real.
- ZackScott, on 08/25/2008, -8/+10I've often wondered why Transformers didn't implement Wi-Fi or at least some sort of wireless communication. Why bark out orders vocally with their robotic tonsils or gills or whatever they have? Optotron could say "Jumbotron, transform" but instead of using sound waves, he merely communicated with mind waves. Encrypted mind waves. I hope the Deceptegons don't ave quantum computing yet to easily break the encryption. My goodness, that would suck for Optotron and gang.
- sg7791, on 08/26/2008, -1/+3I started reading the title and saw Real Transformers. (Awesome, Transformers!) Then I saw Power. (Aw man, that kind of transformer.) But then I read the description... and the first word is Shape-shifting...
So I conclude, we're getting Wi-Fi powered shape-shifting robots. Which might sound cool at first. But we, as the human race, haven't yet seen a robot uprising. Up to this point, a robot uprising would last until the batteries ran out. But what now? They've been waiting for this. We've taken away their final weakness. And now they transform. What is safe? Can we trust technology like we used to? A mailbox could sprout legs at any moment and open fire on our children. Intel is managed by robots. They've been playing the processor game for years. 'Oh, how many Gigahertz will we do today?' 'How about 3?' 'Okay'. They've secretly been building an invincible, wireless, transforming robot army. It all makes sense when we stop to think rationally.
I'm shutting down Intel. - vspazv, on 08/26/2008, -1/+3I think we have something like this already...
"to form its smallest shape or even be a little squishy, so I can just drop it in my pocket." - chrislewis, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2What happened to tesla coils to transmit power wirelessly? ;P
- TheHardDisk, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2If it means I can get a replicated larger penis, I for one welcome our miniature transforming overlords.
- werries, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1Mercerism!
- werries, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1refuel...via the car radio. O.O
- mkamal, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1***** FOX NE... err.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1Can you use their metal torso to ferment beer?
- smoknyreyz, on 08/26/2008, -1/+2I'm guessing the guys at Intel have never watched an episode of Stargate Atlantis...... Do we really want swarm robots aka Replicators running around any time soon...
- DyceFreak, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1not true, the rate of technology improvement is proportional to the amount of money going into it.. and it has always been, on a leading/corporate/manufacturing level; the same.
- andre9, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_goo
- mstrebe, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1Technically, that's called a "Rectenna" (true, even though it sounds funny)
- jjoker1337, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1Wow. One day there could be no such thing as wire management with building and upgrading desktop computers. I guess I'm going a little far ahead here, but imagine a day where electric powered cars would automatically refuel while on the road. This could really do wonders.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1The following Singularity is brought to you by Intel.
Posthuman much? - inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1LOL! Yeah, AMD is just pummelling their asses.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -2/+3Wow, they recently released an article on wireless power technology by Intel, an idea I came up just last week while walking in the hallways of school. Now... now they want to take my long dream of building the first real-life Transformer.
- Heidenreich12, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1intel has a lot of great products coming our way...
- zebragrrl, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1that's probably why they bark orders... proximity based security.
Hence the development of lasorbeek and ravpage... to attempt to infiltrate the proximity and intercept the vocal communications.
Plus, it's a lot easier to network vocally. as long as you're all using the same networking protocol, you can communicate regardless of hardware or wetware.
That, and it save on the enerjon spheres. - TheHardDisk, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1Yea, what's a 1.2 billion dollars of losses this year, and quitting their handheld and digital television divisions, and selling their TV chip business to Broadcom, and Hector Ruiz (CEO of AMD) stepping down.. Who's on top of the world now baby?
- philhatesyou, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1AMD isn't who they're worried about, especially in the world of embedded devices. They're receiving a swift kick in the ass from ARM in that area, and Atom isn't going to change that.
- Atomic1fire, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1RTA
We are getting wifi power and shapeshifting minirobots that make for cool squishy cellphones - Oronar, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1@chrisduser
