- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -8/+43That was so stupid.
- Archon810, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13***** building a new computer, the one thing I'm hoping for is that the stock price will finally climb out of the ***** it's been in for the past 8 months. Watching INTC carefully tomorrow.
- DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15"Apple started using the Power[Book|Mac] moniker when they switched from the 680x0 architecture to PowerPC. Hence, they are no longer using the name since they are no longer using the architecture it refers to."
Erm, no they didn't. The PowerBook existed before they started using PowerPC chips. - SuperGhost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Official release date is still July 27, but available on the 23rd - And AMD is also cutting prices a day after the Official release... I'm on a budget so an AMD X2 at 50% off will suit me fine.
http://digg.com/tech_news/AMD_Plans_Major_CPU_Price_Drops_Day_After_Conroe_ - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is actually just the official announcement.
- endgame, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I have heard from numerous places & review sites that this new arcitecture is insanely FAST. In fact many are saying that on July 23rd AMD will lose the desktop crown...possibly for a long time to come. It's nice to see Intel FINALLY come out with a super fast processor.
- Reap, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11PLEASE PEOPLE! The only thing worse than reading a comment with mispellings is reading a comment complaining about ONE WORD, which dosn't affect the readablity of the comment in the least, u kno whta ih meean?
- PhysicsTheory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Just remember, 20% of Intel's production is more than AMDs entire fab capacity. There will be plenty of these chips, some folks who preordered from less than reputable dealers already started receiving them a few days ago.
Also remember tomorrow is when the official announcement happens, and the NDA is up. The 23rd is the rumored date that the products start to ship from resellers. - Astravian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Using clock speed as a measure of performance is becoming obsolete. Yes, that is correct.
- Archon810, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9single core p4? it'll rape it like there's no tomorrow. at half the wattage. if the app supports threading optimized for dual core, then it'll definitely kill p4. p4 architecture is *****, conroe is reviving the p3 :) dual souped up p3s is what that is.
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Dude, don't you realize that this is the Era Of Stupid-Ass Logos? Just look at everyone from UPS to (WTF)Sprite changing their logos. Hopefully we will see more Unintentional Goatses.
- pocketmonster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Any idea why it is called Conroe? I grew up near Conroe, Texas and I kind of doubt that little town had that much influence on Intel...
- finalmillenium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm not a big Intel fan(No I don't hate Intel, I've just had some bad experiences with their Xeon line of p4s.) But Archon810 has a good point about going back to the P3 based architecture.
- uberism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5there are already many benchmarks out, just search around and you'll find them
- DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7What, based on clock speed? I thought everyone knew by now that clock speed isn't everything. Heck, AMD proved it. Wait for the benchmarks before making sweeping generalizations, and stop trying to justify your purchase to the rest of us.
- brandonking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ugh. Not thinking today, are we? Intel said they expect Core 2 Duos to make up 20% of their shipments. People are going to opt for Core (1) Duos now that prices will drop below $200 for high clock rate versions. Businesses will probably migrate, etc to more cost effective processors. 20% will be looking for the pin compatibility, shared cache, etc of the Core 2. That's where teh 20% comes from. Not yield problems.
- M2Ys4U, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Bechies are already out there... Google is your friend.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Merom will Conroe will not. Merom will be another month or so, and will top at 2.33 Ghz.
- Araya213, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Lol, I just made the switch to AMD64 and now this. Can't wait to see some benchmarks!
- an0nym0us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Check the nearest abandon shack near your town. Inside, there's a door that leads to Intel's secret underground lab. :P
- chadseld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Everything cratered today. Something about a war in the east and the end of mankind or something... I don't know I was reading the poignant guide and that messed up my concentration.
- theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When will people catch on that clock doesn't matter anymore!
Jesus tap dancing Christ, get with the times! - jcpudd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Do I see overdraft fees your future?
- rattsabre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4$999 Extreme Edition has the multiplyer unlocked upwards, too. Also, in comparison to the 1.86GHz one it has twice as much L2 cache. Still, it's not worth 6x the price (to sane people.)
- DesolataX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There goes my Debit Card Balance :P
- ohnnyj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hope to see some Merom based MacBook Pros soon.
- theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On the contrary, the Prescott ran hot, but ran very nicely for me. Still using it, still going strong.
- TyroPyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you always wait for the next big thing, you'll always be waiting :)
- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you RTFA, the 2.93GHz model is the Core 2 Extreme which has some other bells and whistles. Everything slower is Core 2 Duo.
- jerwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Diminishing returns man. It's a fact of life. It always costs disproportionally more to get the best.
- OsiVert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unfortunately there aren't very many motherboards to choose from just yet. If you purchase it now, you might be waiting a couple of weeks before you get a motherboard that will match your needs. But heck, I would purchase one now just in case they have shortages. Here is a good link of motherboards and their availability:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=101408 - MonaLisa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm with you there. Did you see AMD today? It's cratering...hmm.
- diehard2k5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31.86GHz for $183 to 2.93GHz for $999? That's quite a price gap. Is that correct?
- DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I heard that these will slot right into a new iMac.
Not that I feel like upgrading any time soon or anything, but is that true? - ohnnyj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Merom = mobile Conroe, to be release in August
- b0wl0fud0n, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6This morning at the hardocp web site, there was an article hinting that the Conroe chips weren't as high performing as expected and that once the chip was released and new reviews released, people would be dissapointed. The original article was on this page:
http://www.hardocp.com/news.html?news=MjAwODgsLCwsLCwx - Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Still using mine and loving it...I'm gonna give her the six gun salute when I get my shiny new E6600.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice, Conroe looks very promising, I'm still running a Northwood 3.06GHz, I can only imagine what it'll be like to jump to Conroe...... but personally, I think I'll wait a bit, Intel is scheduled to release a Quad core "Kentsfield" processor to replace their current X6800 as the next extreme edition quite soon, I'll probably get that :D but it not being a native Quad core is a bit concerning...... might switch to K8L which will be a native quad.
- jcpudd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Would an "Official Announcement" sound better?
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's actually fairly normal. For example, compare the price of a 2 GHz Athlon 64 to a 2.8 GHz Athlon 64 FX, and keep in mind that there are other differences between the high and low end processors, such as increased CPU cache.
- Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now it's about more instructions per clock cycle...so lower clock cycles still outperform (immensely by early benchmarks) while using way less wattage. Efficiency is the new battlegrounds, with the outrageous cost of energy bills and all nowadays.
- b0wl0fud0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just got some more information:
http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9001751
Apparently it is being released on the 27th, but marketing for the Conroe starts tomorrow.
*btw my previous link in the above comment doesn't work because they took it down roughly 2 hours ago (note the keyword "was"). - flyingheath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Intel really wants to ramp up production quickly on the Core 2 line as it will be replacing all of their processors. I will be hard to find at your local computer store for a while but you should be able to get one long before the end of the year. Expect a big fire sale on P4's starting soon.
- marktel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hey now easy on the 'roe.. go tigers.
- blackomegax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, conroe runs on a 1066mhz system bus. and overclockers on good boards will see FSB's as high as 1400 and above.
while it's still ***** to share a bus, gone are the days of the 533/800 cpu's - Slickjim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know of any laptops that are going to be using conroe coming out soon? I read that since it's power efficient enough it could be used in a laptop. Are there any laptops coming out soon with either of these processors? I need to know because I need to buy a laptop for college, Aug 12 at the latest.
- marthaphoebe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whats the difference between conroe and woodcrest? cause I see woodcrests available on dell workstations (as well as servers) too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why's guide?
Really? Awesome book BTW. He should finish writing it that lazy bastard. - waynejkruse10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No they wont, the Mac Mini's use a mobile CPU (Core Duo) which is different socket to the desktop Conroe (Core 2 Duo). There will be a Mobile version of the Core 2 Duo called Merom which possibly could fit into Apple's current products.
- an0nym0us, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2lol, credit ftw!
