- Tuckie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The title isn't misleading at all. It says that it installs mythTV on the xbox, which it does, and in the description even says that it is the front-end. I'm contemplating doing this on my xbox as opposed to just navigating to the backend's samba share in xbmc.
- JAWS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed, xbmc seems like a far better option (more versatile than mythtv). I've been running xbmc for 1 1/2 yrs now and love it. All my kids' Disney flicks are on it along with any other high traffic dvd's. I don't even watch TV anymore just torrent to my comp. and stream to the xbox to watch 'my' shows.
- Ryan711, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm can xbmc watch record and pause live tv, didn't think so
- Don_Quixote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait, can someone clarify something for me. I had previously believed that the only ways to install linux were to have a modded xbox or use the MechInstaller trick. The guide says you can just burn a cdrw or dvdr, insert it and boot linux? Do you needed a modded xbox to boot it?
Also, I read that installation of linux will void the capability of the use of Live. Is the installation reverse-able? I would really appreciate any help. Thanks. - squenix1221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg effect already? this site is very slow
- Ryan711, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0disregard above comment, when the site came back online I read it and said it wasn't able to do that
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uhhhh
its down fo me
and you cant actuly use his as PVR only as a front end
however there are other alternatives but i like mythtv a lot more.... im a linux guy. - tendonut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Well since the Xbox is not capable of running the backend, I am only assume that it functions just like the PC frontend. I have a frontend running on the mythbox itself and my iBook and it works flawlessly

file download location if the site goes down again.
+Digg - beandog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm, this might actually be pretty cool. I have my mythbox just how I like it, but the only problem is my nvidia tv-out screen bows quite a bit on the screen. If I used an xbox for the frontend, maybe it won't.
- ZarZax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting proof of concept, but I agree and would just stick to Xbox Media Center.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@jaws
right on I do the exact same
I hate commercials
I also have pplive (p2ptv) installed on my computer and I made an *.strm file with http://192.168.0.1/1.rm as the address
-there's nothing llike streaming FSN for absolutley free (I also just watched syriana on one of the stations and the picture quality was great) - SnowSurfns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have my pvr computer record to a shared folder and then i watch it on my xbox with xbmc, but still pretty cool
+digg - jgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...yeah and neither can MythTv on the xbox, it can only stream....the equivalent of xbmc
- stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use xbmc and rss torrents and it works great but I also use mythtv on the xbox to connect to my mythtv back end. While both will play video they each have their strengths and weaknesses. The people who keep saything this is a dumb idea and just use xbmc have obviously never played with myth on an xbox for a frontend.

Quality content control. - xciton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please read up on myth and how it works. XBMC and Myth do not do the same thing. XBMC is only a player (A very nice one mind you).
Myth is really two things. A frontend and a backend. In every setup, you must have at least one of each (they could both be on the same machine, or on seperate machines). You can have multiple frontends and backends. The xbox port of myth is ONLY a frontend. You will require a backend on a standard PC to do the recording and scheduling.
Mythtv as a complete frontend/backend setup is much more than XBMC will ever be. - Tuckie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0XBMC tutorial:
Ftp over xbmc folder into apps folder
Modify the ini of your dash to link to location of xbmc xbe
Tweak the xbmc xml file through ftp or the web interface to modify bookmarks as you see fit.
Installing xbmc is a lot easier than it is to install MythTV. If you can ftp a folder, you can use xbmc. - Unitarder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So the Xbox MythTV should be able to do what a regular pc frontend can do, or do you have to have both frontend and backend on the same box to be able to pause live TV? Plus, which has better emulation programs? I've never played with MythTV, or any Linux emulation programs. But I do know that the emulators for Xbox are pretty much perfectly tuned for it, minimal setup and all. Damn, I think I gotta have a go at this. Pffft, I just got XBMC setup just the way I wanted it. Why can't these guys stop making cool ***** for hacked Xboxes dammit :)
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Since the XBox does not have PCI or USB2.0 ports, it cannot have a tuner directly attached, not to mention it only has 64MB of RAM. Therefore, it can't run the backend. However, it should run the frontend fine.
- tendonut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0But as they have said above, XBMC can't connect to a remote backend and view live TV and schedule recordings. That's the advantage of MythTV. If you don't plan on doing that, then MythTV is useless to you
- pineapples10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone know if its possible to install this without using Xebian? Id rather use Damn Small Linux or Gentoox.
- scottauth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there an easy turtorial like this for installing XBMC?!
- phuzzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now..if XBMC had a torrent app with it as well..that woudl be nice..wouldnt have to leave a PC on..just leave the XBOX on and have it do all the work...
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0MEH!!!!
Bittorrent+RSS + SAMBA + XBMC = owns any PVR out there. - baratunde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Xbox media center does this already. I agree with others. Have been using it for a year and a half. It plays every video file format i've thrown at it. Even something called Matroska .mkv files. all I want is a new XMBC for the 360. I have a TiVo, old Xbox and new xbox coming, plus am waiting for apple's souped up Mini. That's too many boxes in the living room.
- tedlee10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah Agree. You would be better of hust using XBMC to stream your content.
- Unitarder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I don't know why I didn't just say emulators, I guess I just wanted to sound lame.
- RichMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No thanks, i'm quite content with my current setup "use a computer to automatically download stuff in bittorrent, then an xbox with XBMC to stream it over and play."
this is working great already, the only problem is that an xbox isn't powerful enough to play high-res H264 video, so if video like that became a standard, then i'd be outta luck with this setup. . - lzlaxhacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Or...go the easy route and just use Xbox Media Center.
later - jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Or, you could use the Xbox to play games, because the 360's backwards compatibility SUCKS.
- crash331, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Misleading title. It will just view the movies stored on another MythTV box. Says the Xbox is not powerful enough to act as a PVR on its own. No digg.
- gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0Why not give me an Xbox so I don't have to buy one?
