- tmolini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow! Sun is awarded several awards this week..... it is a good day for many folks in engineering and product marketing. Our hats are off to you!
Not only was DTrace software from Sun was chosen as the Gold winner in The Wall Street Journal's 2006 Technology Innovation Awards contest, the T1000 was awarded a runner up for the Energy & Power category.
Additionally, two leading Java technology products - Sun Java Web Start technology and NetBeans IDE 5.0 - are recipients of the Java Developer's Journal Editor's Choice Awards. JDJ also recognized SwingLabs, a Sun-sponsored umbrella project for various open source initiatives that is part of the java.net community.
Interesting common thread... with the exception of Sun Java Web Start technology, they are all open source. - ChrisGilliard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4While I agree with your point about the word inovation, I believe the award winners in this competition display a large degree of innovation. Dtrace has been well recieved by almost everyone that has taken a look at it. The two runners up also sound impressive. I know that a lot of people will benefit from Pfizer's inhalable insulin breakthrough and any improvements we can get in solar paneling are important.
- version30.x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4DTrace=amazing capability
Well deserved props going out to Sun. Here is a link to free Web course from Sun that features nice overviews of DTrace, Zones, ZFS...

- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Giving awards is nice, but am I the only one who thinks the actual word "Innovation" has been used so frequently that it is worn out? Everyone uses it, even those who don't deserve to. Now when something innovative comes along, the news is hard to look at. Isn't innovation just invention's weak little sister? Invention should be hyped, right? I guess invention doesn't happen often enough. Oh well, congrats to the winners anyhow; These folks at least probably used the word properly.
- yummybbq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I was at a conference about year back, and one of the head IT guys at eBay was speaking, and he was talking about Solaris 10. He was saying some really great things about it, but then when he got to DTrace, you could see his eyes light up. I don't remember the exact numbers he quoted, but it was something like a 30-40% performance boost above the baseline Solaris stats, when they turned on DTrace. He was pretty excited.
- rodrickbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dtrace isnt a performance enhancement tool, I dont believe you really understood what he speaker was refering too, because if anything performance will slightly decrease not increase 30-40% lol. Dtrace is a comprehensive dynamic tracing framework that you can us e to pretty much pull any information out of your system that your system records.
- joshjoneswas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I cannot speak for the IBM product... but it ranked higher than an inhalable version of insulin?
Seems a little backwards! Can someone point me to an instance of IBM saving a life anywhere on the planet? :) - joshjoneswas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Showing my ass. I meant to say "SUN" not "IBM"
- jamesdwi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well since many people reading this may not know what dtrace is here, is a blog entry that tries to emplain what dtrace is and how its being used.
http://uadmin.blogspot.com/2006/05/what-is-dtrace.html - opensparc2digg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The UltraSPARC T1 design is available for free download under GPL license from the
www.opensparc.net website. In the state of California, if you buy a T1000, T2000 system,
you may qualify for a PG & E rebate. Pretty cool ! - robbyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the main time i hear the word "innovation" abused is when it's used by microsoft
- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Open source, yes. FLOSS, no.
- marymary, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Rock on!
- crombie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Uhhh....I thought these were INNOVATION awards. Shouldn't it be Gold, Silvr, and Bronze?
