People like you are the reason good tech doesn't get the chance to mature into something more useful. Back in the day, I seem to remember a guy messing around with an oscilloscope (which at the time cost an arm and/or leg) to create a game of Pong. Now the computer gaming industry pulls in 4 BILLION dollars annually.
Case in point, don't knock new technology - there is a good chance down the road, this could be a very useful concept. - Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -26/+59So you'll need a special table, special camera, special software, and special hardware to create a cool but useless gee-wiz effect with pictures.
You know, I think they just might be on to something. - Lyanto, on 10/12/2007, -23/+45Does it come with a HyperRootkit?
- Asbradley21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Old as hell but still neat.
Digg+ - levitron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Cool concept/ ***** audio
- jon3k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Really amazed at the closed-mindedness here.
Do you say the same thing when manufacturers build concept cars?
I don't think Sony's intention is to every actual produce this commercially, but some of the concepts might make it into consumer devices eventually. - rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15No, not really. And sony didn't make it either. And, that isnt really relevant to this.
Shut up. - Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -17/+28redDC: "Case in point, don't knock new technology - there is a good chance down the road, this could be a very useful concept."
You only ever hear about the success stories, not the millions of ideas that were both useless and a waste of money. So instead of giving indiscriminate praise to every new idea, I suggest you judge it thoughtfully on a case-by-case basis. I've done so, and I think this idea is stupid. - Photog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Fascinating, finally a way for me to share my VCR tapes, business cards and low-res photos. I'll take two.
- zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9you must be high...
- solarisom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The audiosounds like narration from either an 80s documentary or a Hanso Corp video on LOST. But a very cool idea! I think it'd be especially cool for widgets--as in putting a clock widget on the wall sans a real clock, or a weather widget...or (I have to say it, do what you must) a Wii countdown widget.
- triont, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6it would be practical for business situations, such as documents that need to be seen by others that work at the company. So it is practical.
- heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It would be much cooler if the tabletop was a display itself, instead of a surface to be projected on.
- SirSid, on 05/27/2009, -1/+6Thats still a sweet idea. I would love to see a system like that for purchase.
- cedrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i thought i was badass with my multi-screen display, but i've jusr een put in my place. I SO NEED THAT.
- joe7d6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3but... does it run linux?
- SirSid, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3I dont think it would be all to expensive now days. That video sounds as if it were from the '90s My estimate is that it would cost around 2.5 k to pay for it all.
- superpatty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can definitely see this being used in specialized fields or for a group presentation
If you have more than one person on stage and they both need to manipulate files on separate computers but still interact together this would be ideal - Prometheus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Is someone just chain digging down comments? What's up with all these -2's on valid comments?
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Rainbow, your title isn't very good... so people didn't click on it. HyperDragging is a much better title.
- sproutworks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think this could be added to a standard projector with relatively little extra cost. A simple digital camera with software to track movement of laser dots should not cost very much. Then the projector could tell the computer where to move doucments via USB.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4How about taking a 72" LCD television, putting it horizontal, and calling it a desktop?
- jer.williams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This one of those "holy cow" kind of videos, only not cow.
- lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, it's one step forward to the interface in Minority Report.
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So crappy.
- eugenef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is amazing!
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Oh come on, don't dig me down, have you seen the movie The Island? We have the technology today to do something a heluva lot more sophisticated then using a camera and motion capture.
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Was that a Lost orientation video?
- davidod87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's possible a small prejector of some sort could be built in to the top of the back of the notebook's screen to create limited virtual space. But we're talking 2015 here.
- eviltoaster2go, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1at this stage it looks more like a concept than an actual product. It would be a bit more useful if you could use it to do more system level things, like dragging and dropping a document to a laserjet on the table to print, or dragging and dropping between laptops to transfer files to shared folders. Yay innovation
- h4lofourt33n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very cool, but like everyone is saying, by the time you're done paying for everything, you don't really get much. This might be cool for integration with the PS3 for LAN parties, drag and drop file, character, items, etc. trade tables. But it looks as though Sony is pulling on strings that don't need to be pulled on, i.e. a primarily home-electronics company developing products that can only be used by bill gates and his right hand.
- marioluigi123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This actually reminds me of how I was in computer class today and I was trying to use my mouse to move access stuff on my neighbor's computer. I moved the mouse to the right and was surprised that the cursor didn't show up on his screen.
- JonnyJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1from a graphic designers point of view i can see this being an amazing asset to a design team
imagine having one of those tables in a conference room and just throwing out ideas from your computer as you normally would with paper
economical, practical, and above all else, friggin sweet - boohoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for the love of God, just tell me if it comes with an HDMI ouput.
- cube5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even though I'm not a big fan of SONY from recent events, this is awesome, that would be so cool say your doing a round table and instead of having a projector you've got the data literally right in front of you.
- Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@superpatty:
That's exactly what I was thinking. Specialized industries with meetings that need interaction could one day benefit from this technology if it's enhanced and fine-tuned. On a much more consumer level in the far future, dragging things from a "written"/"pasted" to board (similar to the one in the video) into one's PDA, phone or notebook computer could prove to be very interesting and get rid of wires. Imagine using this to grab lectures, notes and homework assignments from a teacher or community bulletins. It's cool. - yaosio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So old my grandma knows about this and she died in the 80's.
- MortenAaserud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's neat but nothing more
- Habemus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My ears! That sounded like the audio from a filmstrip in health class circa 1975. I kept expecting to hear a beep telling me to roll the film strip up one frame.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think a table with a build in moniter
would be much more useful with a designated white circle type area where you place your coffee on screen
and a built in keypad for the touchscreen effect
and a a small part of the screen with your family photos
and a another area in the screen would be a built in tv for weather and lunch break and such
and another part of the screen would be a built in browser
and tabs would let you switch between browser and word processer and all that other office stuff
that would be a cool table - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, now that I look at it again, this is the exact same video quality and sound I am getting out of my brand new Sony Handycam, so the video could have been made yesterday.
- tolos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this isn't the first time sony's developed non-traditional user-interaction:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Tile_based_user_interface - fatnutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't bring it up...I just expanded on another comment about Apple, We all know how the Apple-fan reaction would be. It's not bashing when it's the ***** truth....In fact, I didn't bash Apple, I bashed the ***** fanboys that make the apple community look like a collective ass...Take it to the bank and cash it with the memo; Eat my ass.
- tethead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0saw this several years ago but still very cool.
- upperbrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, this is not new.
- jakibakes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm good idea!
- teitoku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cute, but what about practicality? Seems like simple networking or VNC would be just as useful.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No, dugg down for trying to bash Apple in a non-Apple related story.
- hank85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A little cool. Completely impractical.
- lopla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iBrain a new Apple product lets you drag visual information from your visual cortex onto your display. It will rock your world and it's part of Leopard. It will require the iNterface module to retrieve the information from your cortex.
