- Firehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll take this one instead.

You can just buy the body...
http://www.k1-styling.sk/menu.php?menu=attack_menu.htm&id=attack-introduction.htm
It is built from early 90's accord parts.
The chassis can handle around 300whp...most people just swap in a Japanese Honda H22 motor in it.
Very beautiful car...you can build them for around 20K your self if you can do all the welding and find a cheap parts car, or buy one for around 40-60K all done up, but don't quote me on those numbers.
-Erik - yos9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YEAH PHILLY!!! Sweet look too...
- runelind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah electrical engines are very good at producing torque almost instantaneously. There was a piece about Roger Moore's all-electrical vehicle that was just insane off the line. Had a range of about ~200 miles before he had to plug it back in.
- Jibberish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" The batteries powering the electric motor act as capacitors able to discharge a lot of energy in short bursts, enough for 0-60 runs in the sub 4-second range"
Umm... Batteries act a lot different than capacitors. Capacitors discharge much more rapidly than batteries. I spoke (for a while)with this individual at an electrical trade show last year about the electric drag car they had on display there. They used enormous banks of Maxwell capacitors to achieve fast acceleration times. Just like these 2700 Farad kind http://www.maxwell.com/ultracapacitors/products/PC2500.html
So I wonder if these people used capacitors or batteries? - Jibberish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, then name says PC 2500, but the data sheet says 2700 F, so I guess I was right the first time. Ok, I'll shut up now.
- mattspammail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the linked project home page: (click on the photo)
"...a group of inner-city high school students teaming up with a few University of Pennsylvania Engineering students..." - Jibberish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oops... I think I meant 2500 Farad, not 2700
- mojomaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't forget to visit their homesite. Outstanding!
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, i went to the wrong high school... This is absolutely fantastic, well done guys! it kinda reminds me of the new Mitsubishi Eclipse and how it ( or the prototype anyway ) was supposed to feature a couple electrics for extra power.
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome
- creasian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh this is SWWEET
- hholland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the best digg I've ever seen.
- eaasness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Firehead,
I applaud Toyota, but 30 MPG is is a far cry from 50 MPG.
E - Jibberish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, I remember that guy at the trade show telling me about how they went through many trials and tribulations with the frame becoming bent from the initial torque, as well as parts of the drive train. It's amazing how much power they can get from those motors. The car at the show was able dissipate all the juice from the capacitors in the 1/4 mile. That's a lot of energy transferred to motion.
- mrtrumpets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This looks great... now as long as it meets safety standards, I bet these kids can market it and make millions.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Extra digg+ for them being high school kids!
- eaasness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder how this car is holding up? The big problem with electric motors is the fact that there is too much initial torque. This tends to break parts in the drive line.
- themulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0west Philly, wow.. I try my best to avoid that area. Amazed, and glad something like this came out from that area, maybe it will inspire others.
- Nicto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet car, to bad it'll never see production. I'd buy one if they could get the price under 30K though.
- -=GoD=-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kudos to those kids, that kicks some major ass, it would be nice if the world opened up to cars like this, so we can stop spending so much damn money on gas, psh 2.65 and its going up
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's great, I grew up in Philly and usually avoided that area. it's really nice to see something good coming out of West Philly. Probably the best thing since Will Smith. :)
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yeah electrical engines are very good at producing torque almost instantaneously. There was a piece about Roger Moore's all-electrical vehicle that was just insane off the line. Had a range of about ~200 miles before he had to plug it back in."
1. Electric motor, not "electrical engine"
2. They produce a completely flat torque curve from 0 rpm on up. - akira_x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and they say public schools suck...
Very cool digg. - bigcajunman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/08/15/hybrid.tinkerers.ap/index.html also speaks of this kind of stuff, pretty cool!
- Koolidude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out the local stories from Philly's ABC 6 here:

http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=traffic&id=3063610 - bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, hybrids are like..cheating man...
- PhAdE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They could use a fluid torque converter of some sort, with some electronically actuated impellers in it...to keep from snapping the car in half every time it takes off.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, simply amazing.
- Surreal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The toyota volta is the first hybrid car to be built that achieves the said 0-60 in 4 seconds. So, their clame that this is the first, is not true.
- egbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are not only high school students working on it but also some college students and teachers. From the "Member Profile" page you have a communication major and two mechanical engineering majors working on it.
- drunkenmonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Absolutely incredible. Practical? maybe not yet, but soon hopefully.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, that's awesome. Now if only we could see something like this mass produced.
- Gofast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy F-ing sh*t Bat Man - very nice !
- hdherndon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oops... i mean without university-student assistance...
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats awesome!
I DIGG - hdherndon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0electrics are great for accleration... as long as you don't have thousands of pounds of batteries in 'em like many pure electrics (with Pb/Acid batts) Hence, the high performance hybrid concept...
The secret to 50 MPG??? Turbo Diesel. It would get much worse milage with a gas engine.
For something cool that high schoolers do (withought assistance), check out http://www.winstonsolar.org/race - notquitehumn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if the Toyota Volta sounds anything like the Mars Volta... =) jk
- cainrok, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0It be funny if someone bought the car for the body, took out the current Drive system, and put in a gasoline engine it. With some modding needed.

What is Digg?
