What?
It always worked for Bugs Bunny... - h0zae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I am assuming that a referring link from usatoday.com might help a little.
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"it was alright up to the point which the person said "i'm going to start a blog" .............you and everyone else who has nothing good to say"
Im tired of people giving blogs a bad name, There is nothing wrong with blogs, its a great instrument to get your ideas across the internet without breaking the bank to actually start a real website with quality content that everyone can relate to instead of you and a close circle of friends or like minded people. Imagine the net withoug blogs, It would be a very desolate place. - YellowBook, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@danswim: "Excellent coverage"
How can an article like this which is so devoid of any meaningful detail be described as "excellent coverage"?
This is a crap article - there are thousands of SEO articles better than this one.
Buried as lame. - skored, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is good advice for a small business person. Pretty basic stuff but definitely a great start for a lady who doesn't really know anything. I am always shocked at what the actual level of search engine knowledge that people actually have. Most people I know don't even realize that their are "sponsored" ads that people pay for. Cool article - dugg
- MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6your site gets ranked well if its tagged properly and if you have content relevant to search terms.
everyone wants to be #1 but doesn't want to do ***** to achieve it. saying that my old site had tons of top searches - mainly because it was content explosion. - Kyle660, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Move slowly but deliberately. Carry yourself like a suave man would. Watch all the old James Bond movies. You never see James move in a jerky, hyper fashion. He knows exactly the right pace to fight, drink, walk, and make love. He moves like a wily predator, and he always gets his prey.
*****, sorry, that's girls. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@TheReport
i remember the internet before blogs and it wasn't desolate at all. a very rich and varied environment...just a lot less average joes telling the whole world about their mundane lives and weakly-formed opinions on a daily basis. - michaelhood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@geekitechture, et al.:
I just can't get enough of you folks who think they're some sort of SEO elite by saying "oh Google sucks, I don't optimize for them. Their SERPs are too spammy."
I've got news for you, and the rest of the people that are out of touch with reality.
The average person who is searching Google is quite happy with the search results, and frankly they don't know what MFAs or spam results look like.
There was a study last year that determined some 75% of searchers cannot differ between paid and organic results on Yahoo and Google. Think about that for a moment.
Google has more than 60% of the marketshare. If you're just throwing this away because of your elitist attitude, I sure hope any clients you may have know who they're dealing with. - MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you can get ranked as high as you want on the search engines people don't use. look at the results of refering search engines on 90% of sites out there and it will be #1 google. #2 Yahoo #3 MSN #4 AOL
With google leading the pack with 3/4's of traffic sent.
other search engines are fine and dandy but once your on google these other engines crawl you anyways. - agimat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Easy, just get a domain with the word google on it. They'll even send you fan mail.
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You're probably active in the SEO field then. I once stated that SEO basic fits on one piece of paper (A4 or US legal). And I still stand by that. Moreover quite some CMS programs (WordPress) come with SEO out of the box, or do so when you add the right template.
So what's left? Well, what most SEO kings can't provide: unique content.
There are two ways to get to the top: SEOing your site like crazy, and if you do it too good you might be king of the hill for a few months, and then drop to the very bottom of Google.
Or you keep adding content and take some basic rules into account. Rules that are simple: pick a good title and URL, use HTML the right way (use h1 element instead of font, b, strong, i combinations), read up on what you're writing about in order to find related words, link to related content, on your site first, on other sites second.
I do that for http://johnbokma.com/ and I have well over 13,000 visitors a day with about 1400 (yes, 1400) pages. And the AdSense is getting better. Everybody who has the time to maintain a blog can do the same. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@dugdig:
From a business marketing perspective, blogs are not necessarily about gaming any systems (especially in this context). It's about generating new content so that Google crawls your site often, and so that you consistently post good content (hopefully), allowing people to start viewing you as a topical expert. Therapists don't really need to game Digg. - Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You cared enough to check and you have Google Adsense on your site, so your actions seem to contradict what you're saying.
Anyway, I agree on the content thing. I have content (well, I hope, see http://johnbokma.com/ ), and Adsense. Useful content is good, so I would say keep up the good work. If you write natural, use HTML wisely (or use a CMS that does this for you) and name your URLs so that they are readable to humans you're ok. That's basically all the SEO you need.
People who measure keyword density, use Overture and other keyword tools too much end up with a single page that says S P A M to the visitors they get. Also, by the time they have written a single page, you might have written 3 with useful content. So in the end you might get more then a dime out of AdSense.
I do. - misterjangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This article is probably only helpful for people that have absolutely no clue how search engines work. Search engine optimization is turning into an industry in its' own right. These 101 tips are the barest minimum that you should be doing if you actually want google or any search engine to notice you.
- michaelhood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh, by the way, if anyone is looking for a real article on SEO..
http://www.seomoz.org/articles/search-ranking-factors.php
This paper was compiled by several SEO industry icons and is extremely detailed. They even update it as times change.
Don't bother with SEO books, they'll be obsolete before they get printed, for the most part. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3SEOBook (www.seobook.com) is one exception to that rule. It is constantly being updated (last update was from Friday) and has great content, including properly leveraging social media (which was included in a more recent revision).
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1quasi-easy: pay them for ad placement, and additionally, resubmit your page/site as frequently as possible, using several variants of the same meta data. sort of a hammer-in-a-screw method.....
- zoxed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately not: try this one: http://www.google.com/search?as_q=zox&as_sitesearch=www.zoxed.eu
Now try the same search in MSN and Yahoo!
And try the same search in Google using site:home.arcor.de/zoxed (same website, different location). - geekitechture, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@ MeatBiProduct:
Let's say your site, *****.com, is buried in Google's SERPS behind spam sites like *****.info, dumbassesrockurass.info and dumbassesrh3x0rs.com. Why is that? Those sites are ranking *better* than yours in Google because they are spam and/or Adsense sites scraping your content, your keywords, and your links as a substitute for real content. When you visit those websites, they have tons of ads with real catchy link text like "Looking for dumbasses? Please visit our sponsors."
No one can find you if your site is buried behind all the trash.
If you can even argue about what Google is becoming -- the cesspool of search engine results --then you have no idea how or why it's changing (so Google can put more money into their coffers).
But then again, I'm on Digg, a ***** Fanboi Central for:
Google
Steve Jobs
Apple
Linux
Wii
PS3
So I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince you of *anything* that's FACT.
- scottybowl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3That article is pretty vague. I have been working in web design and specifically search engine optimization now for a number of years, the link below is to an article that I have written outlining how we achieve consistent results in the major search engines:
http://www.web-designers.biz/2006/01/search-engine-optimization-for.html - Jamfan16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I find it hard to believe that an article titled "How to get Google to notice you" does not mention Google's Webmaster Tools and sitemaps. Granted, they don't sky-rocket you to the top of the search results, but they're a great way to (1) ensure that Google is indexing your entire site and (2) get data on how people are finding your site.
- azmoviez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The problem is that they think it's QUICK and easy when it's actually some research and effort from your average joe. How many family therapists want or need to know HTML? They would be better served by doing more research on the process and then using that knowledge to hire a good webdesigner or SEO.
- balibones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was told my my mother that if I didn't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. I have nothing to say about that article or the fact that it is on the home page of Digg where 99% of the readers are going to know 200% more than what was described in the article. Oh... Guess I should have kept my mouth shut. Sorry mom!
- geekme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2A good way to get a good ranking on google is to submit to directories, google crawls the directories and ranks your site higher.
there is a list at http://www.directorycritic.com/ - otheradam, on 01/29/2009, -0/+0It's simple, just read about Getting Noticed Online
http://www.gettingnoticedonline.co.uk/ - Raymondtsg, on 06/23/2008, -0/+0I have zero links from Google too. Sigh...
- maduin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1A couple of years back, I got google to notice me, you type in my last name and I'd appear first on the list. Just recently, after some hard work, I finally got google to forget about me. I hate being able to be tracked on google, for as much time as I spend on the internet, anyone who knows my name can basically find everything there is to know about me.
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1double post due to lag, digg me down.
- switchblades, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0SEO firms sell and perpetuate the idea that they have the "silver bullet," the truth is that in the current search climate there is no quick-fix, or cure-all when it comes to driving traffic.
Google and other search engines want to serve results that rank "authoritative" sites at the top, and use a complex algorithm to determine sites that meet this criteria. The idea that you can manipulate Google with tons of inbound links, or any other immediate solution is simply wrong. In order to be viewed as an authority, you must become that.
What most firms don't want you to know is that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a marketing approach that anyone can implement. The reason they don't is it actually involves a significant amount of tedious work. Most businesses are already focused on the product or service they already sell, and don't have the time or energy to learn, and implement the regiment to develop their SEO strategy. This involves developing a website's theme through architecture and navigation, creating and adding content that will be useful to users, optimizing landing pages so you can maximize customer conversions, and working methodically to gain topically-relevant inbound links that will actually draw traffic (novel idea isn't it!).
SEO tricks are dead. GO back and read your Marketing 101 book if you want to perfrom well in Google. - RTCA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I won't even read the article. I have Google Adsense on my website, but it's an afterthought. I could care less if I make a dime from ads. I'm into providing useful content, whatever the content may be. Oh yeah, it's a blog. So what?
I read somewhere on some ranking site that my website was 93% SEO optimized, whatever the hell that means. I really don't care though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Easy: Submit your page to Digg. Even if it doesn't make the front page. Google crawls Digg frequently, and your site will get noticed.
- starguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2How to get Google to notice you: Easy, just start clicking on your own Adsense ads.... *snark*
- leffunov, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I hate people customizing their sites to be optimized for search engines. It takes away the objectivity of what a search engine does and only ends up showing spam with infinite tags.
- senfo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I admit, I was expecting blog spam when I first opened your link, but it turns out I was wrong. In fact, I liked your article so much, I even posted it as a new story on Digg and also blogged it in my own blog.

http://www.EuthanasiaClinic.com - geekitechture, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1If you don't know how to optimize your website after running the damn thing for a *year* you're clueless. I studied SEO before I put anything on my site worth looking at. I also take exception with the title of the story and how it's worded. Google is not the only search engine on the Web. The "tips" are what you do to optimize your site for *any* search engine, not just Google's. In fact, I'd concentrate on Yahoo! and the other 10 or 20 search engines out there that are worth a damn because Google is displaying so much spam mixed into results (and sometimes ahead of results that are truly needed) that I can't see wasting time on it anymore. Optimize your website as best you can for *all* search engines and get over the idea that Google is the be-all and end-all of search.
- bombaclott, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0This is how www.bombaclott.com put that everywhere you go and google will definetely notice you!
