    New technologies came along, new concepts that seemed to work, and so other sites caught on and tried them out. It's not like it was suddenly a huge unveiling of things.

The change from static to dynamic languages, javascript, flash, xslt, xml, rss, tagging, blogging, social communities and most of all a communications tool. If its only version 2.0 (or 3.0 now), then the internet is progressing very slowly.
