- FizixMan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52Oh good. I wasn't using words in my blog. I'll start using them now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Awesome. I was trying to blog with hieroglyphics but my visitors just laughed at me.
Now that I'm using words, I'm getting about 4 hits a day! Thanks Digg. - deannnnnn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Maybe I just have ridiculously high standards, but when I read something on the topic of writing, I expect the writer to have completely mastered the English language. Instead, I read this mediocre post that I probably would have been better off not reading.
Look at number 18, she has somewhat of an idea what the passive voice is but gets it wrong.
And number 23, "Write Kinda Like You Talk". That's horrible advice. People talk with inflection; the written word does not have inflection and must be written better than the spoken word to achieve the same level of clarity.
There are many other things I would like to criticize about this post, but I don't like writing long comments. - vann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17If words are important then so the way in which they are presented to us. This art is called typography and, unfortunately, this blog author fails at it.
WTF is that hideous font he is using? - Pix869, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17The world is a cold abyss of hatred spawned by each of my peers selfish desires and terrible vices. How else could I convey such a message of hopelessness to the masses already tainted with greed if not for a blog of my own?
- davecor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16The difference between the almost right word & the right word is really a large matter--it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.

- diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...you can't get fooled again.
--George Bush - TheActionCombo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13The word blog pisses me off.

The irony of such a subject being introduced by such a poorly-crafted sentence as that is astounding... - scispaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Summary: This is poorly written advice about how to write. Don't read it.
- luvkit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Actually, the author has no idea what passive voice is. From Wikipedia's entry:
"In grammar, the voice of a verb describes the relationship between the action (or state) that the verb expresses and the participants identified by its arguments (subject, object, etc.). When the subject is the agent or actor of the verb, the verb is in the active voice. When the subject is the patient, target or undergoer of the action, it is said to be in the passive voice.
For example, in the sentence:
The cat ate the mouse
the verb "ate" is in the active voice, but in the sentence:
The mouse was eaten by the cat
the verbal phrase "was eaten" is passive."
Also, the written word was developed to relate the spoken word. The two are interrelated. And if sounding like a book in conversation is boring, then the same will apply when reading. - danarama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Saying "how to use words to improve your blogging" is a bit like saying "how to use wheels to improve your driving" or something
- scispaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Spam for a mediocre blog post in a font that will make you go cross eyed.
The description of the link has one of the most pained and awkward metaphors I have ever seen. Why should I take writing advice from someone who writes like that? - sariss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Words are my army. Content is my king. Content is leading the words into battle to protect them from who now?? Evil numbers or something?
.....WTF?? - ByronT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Did I really just click a link to a site called PROBLOGGER.NET? Sigh...
- mtb167, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11A conglomerate of stuff you can find anywhere on the web, but not all concisely in one blog post.
Good stuff. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7blogging about blogging... and he's rich for it... wish I thought of it first.
- Brishen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wait, I have to use words now? I just used to slap together about 1000 random letters and post them.
- Hypermarkalan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6May I suggest "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White? http://www.amazon.com/Elements-Style-Fourth-William-Strunk/dp/0205313426/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-3939545-5749447?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175558945&sr=8-1
An indispensable book. - Ulvund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5the internet has words ????
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This just in, "When Blogspamming Digg, be Sure to Have a Blog and Some Spam."

- develdevil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Who would have thought... words... improving a blog.
- FizixMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Judging from his CSS file, I think it's "Arial Narrow".
- ZachRetox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The irony of number 26...
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This article is about successfully blogging for money, not for sheer pleasure. Don't be afraid to make mistakes while blogging. It's just a crutch that will slow you down. Write and get it out there and fix it later, if ever. The blog is eternally beta.
- Jwymon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Let's work through the tough math here.
Let blog = words.
(blog - words) + words = blog
(blog - words) + words != improved blog - Hypermarkalan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Passive voice isn't an incorrect mode of writing. And spotting it is very easy. Passive voice is "to be verb" + past participle. Passive voice is useful when you are more concerned with the object of the sentence, such as in scientific writing or technical writing, or when you wish to abdicate blame. Politicians use passive voice constantly: Mistakes were made. "Were" is the "to be" verb, and "made" is the past participle of "make." In that instance there is no subject "doing" the action. Mistakes were made? Oh yeah? Well who made them?
And it's always preferably to replace boring "to be" verbs--is, be, being, was, were--with more active, precise verbs. But a sentence with an "is" isn't necessarily a passive voice construction. The writer is retarded. - aldomatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2great tips, but i think its common sense though. well for those who have it :o)
- noctum17, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This has to be the most absure title I've seen in a long time. Why are people digging this story?
- borderinsanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@mtb167: +Digg for the humor. When spelled "conglomerate" the noun refers to a corporation. I think you meant "conglomeration" (noun), instead of "conglomerate" (verb).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm not sure I've ever seen blogspam blogspam but trust Digg to pull it off.
- tsarfan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4after all these years, it's still hard to top How to Blog
http://www.tonypierce.com/blog/2004/06/how-to-blog-by-tony-pierce-110-1.htm - deusdiabolus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Consider then...Flickr.
- kdragoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I buried this because it's just plain lame. No way I'm following a link to a story telling me how to write when the introduction is a lesson in bad writing.
This post reminded me of what I hate about the internets. People who can't write should stay the f*ck away from blogs. - supervapio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Very strange. I've never thought it is for real. http://musiclabs.blogspot.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3half assed writing is what blogging is all about. if you could really write you would be published by someone other than yourself.
- survivordean, on 10/06/2008, -0/+1thanks for the inspiring words. i love blogging but i don't have a pr.
- kahrn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That entire article seems to focus on one thing, getting more readers to a blog _in order to_ make MONEY.
Blogging isn't about making money. Judging by the amount of Ad's on the page, I'll guess whoever is in charge of that blog thinks it is. If you wanna plaster Ad's all over the place, do it on a standard web page, or better yet a crappy parking page.
Blogging is about personal stuff, biography-like stuff, sharing, diary, writting, collaboration, informing, teaching and learning. IMO. It's people like this that are changing that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@borderinsanity
It would be only thing if you were the grammar police, but you're the mistaken grammar police. A conglomerate can be an conglomeration. Better luck next time. - krakround, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1blogging isn't about content or writing well. It's about being first or at least following the current meme.
- poxoe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Beautiful! I don't like such articles.
- RandomGuySteve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Webpages on the internet are basically akin to freakshows of the olden days. You have to get the people to come to the website, click through it, and perhaps do it again.
God damn freakshows, every one of them.
What? You wanted some sort of analogy? - Pix869, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yeah, if content is king in a blog, usually the written word is the main bulk OF that content....not the supporters of the content.
- geekitechture, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What ads?
Anyone who sees ads anywhere on the Web is not setting up browsers and hosts file correctly.
Oh, and I thought it was a great article. Without ads I didn't even realize I was on a make-money-by-blogging site, so I could just absorb the *words* -- which were excellent, IMO -- and ignore the rest. There is some great advice in that post. - MakeYourNut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Doh. My work filter blocks the site, so I can't heap neither praise nor snark here. Can anyone offer to cut and paste some tidbits, or else point to a mirror?
- jme2224, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Regardless of grammar mistakes, this is a great article that will help any new blogger.
