Don't speed - Coopjust, on 10/12/2007, -5/+115Why do people always digg down people who just put duggmirror?
Duggmirror checks the referrer, so http://www.duggmirror.com and http://duggmirror.com/tech_news/How_to_Avoid_Getting_Pulled_Over_for_Speeding/ are the SAME thing. - dmclone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+99Just to let you know that the old "send an extra $5 dollars in with your ticket" trick doesn't work.
- jtek99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+77I hate people who drive with their brights on. For the love of all that is decent, please don't blind everyone in front of you on the off chance you might spot a cop car.
- MaddDog, on 10/12/2007, -8/+70Here's another one - if you're late and have to speed, let the girlfriend drive. Its a fact that girls are more likely to get away with a warning.
- Evoguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+63That's been disproved by Snopes. http://www.snopes.com/autos/law/ticket.asp
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+54ok, you get pulled over then what?
PLAN A == Avoid the ticket
01. immediately swallow all of your ego/pride.
02. intently listen to the officer. hang on their every word.
03. if you're much of an actor try to convey your inferiority.
04. always slather on as many "yes, sirs/ma'ams" as possible.
05. in poor weather, profusely apologize for their having to "get wet/cold".
06. try to get choked/shaken up. if you're a man all the better.
PLAN B ==
01. take your ticket.
02. keep your penis. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+52Yeah, big oversight failing to mention the best way not to get pulled over:
Don't do anything wrong.
Don't speed. Don't cut corners. Don't run head first into oncoming traffic. Don't drive in Flordia if you're black. you know, obvious things not to do to get pulled over. - clownguyx, on 10/12/2007, -28/+72When I don't go faster than the limits posted, I never get pulled over. Try that trick sometime.
- dchaosdx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41@MaddDog
that is... until your girlfriend actually gets a ticket and doesn't give you any for a month :) - errer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+431. Go so fast the reflection off your license plate is doppler-shifted to a different frenquency. And I mean WAY fast.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -30/+65http://www.duggmirror.com
- jivemasta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35He doesn't mean run from them if they turn lights/sirens on. He means before that. You aren't doing anything wrong by turning onto another road. For all the cop knows, that is the way you need to go. If they catch you, they can't do anything about the running part if you did it before they turned sirens and lights on.
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36Plain and simple: Once you've reached the speed limit never drive faster than the cars around you.
- haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35PLAN D ==
01. Ask for a hand job - wwwdot1jesdotus, on 10/12/2007, -47/+75In Colorado if you get a ticket where you are allowed to send in the fine, you can send in an extra $5. They will send you a refund check for the $5 and they can't close the case until you cash it (in other words, if you "forget" to cash it, the case will never close and you will never be charged the points).
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -20/+47Well if you never go over the speed limit then you're probably impeding traffic and being a general nuisance on the road.
Wake up.
Everybody speeds. If you drive on any highway anywhere on America and you drive the same speed as other cars, you're going to be speeding.
Self-important ***** like you should stick to electric scooters or buses. - wwwdot1jesdotus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Is that a Hot Wheels or a Power Wheels?
- Jeffrey903, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Agreed. If the speed limit is like 55 and all of the cars are going 70, with a few going faster, just stay at 70 (or below). It would seem unreasonable for a cop to give you a ticket for going 70 if everyone around you was as well, in addition to other people going even faster.
- Evoguy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29A side not, for those of you who live in Cali. Police enforcement around south bay area just got LIDAR equipment about 3 weeks ago.. so that tip about radar detectors, works no more :-(
Just a heads up.
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Here's another tip: drive a sleeper.
Dont drive a car that screams 'drunk 20-something' (Mustang GT), 'habitual offender' (Porsche), or 'better then average drug bust/warrant/parole violation' (Honda with ground effects and decals), or 'cokehead-with-a-moustache' (Corvette).
Ideally, something like a Cadillac CTS-V.
It makes no difference if you are doing 100 MPH and the stop is *going to happen*, but it makes a difference when you are doing 80 and the cop just doesnt like your 'attitude'. - jivemasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Plus accidents happen because of a difference of speed.
- UncleCrapper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26I can't believe LA just got LIDAR. *****, do they get out and crank start their cruisers every shift? Anyway, we've had LIDAR in BC and Alberta for probably a decade, which brings me to my story and that is a tactic that Canadian police seem to love and that is the roadside LIDAR trap. The cops hide behind a sign, car, overpass support, tree or bush and proceed to laser you from the side of the road. Once they identify for you speeding, they step out into your lane and put their hand up to stop you. That's fine for city speeds, but once you get on a freeway or highway it is downright dangerous and police have been hit on several occasions. There is a reason pedestrians are not permitted on freeways and that is one of them. More than once I have been surprised by a cop jumping out into traffic to stop either the car behind or beside me and almost hit them. On one occasion it was my turn for a ticket and an RCMP traffic cop quite literally jumped out in front of my car in an 80 Km/h zone and I had to swerve to avoid hitting him. I slammed on my brakes about a block down the road in shock and anger, looked back at the cop yelled "***** you" to him and just kept on going. I was livid. To risk his life or serious injury for the sake of a traffic ticket is the antithesis to traffic safety that speed enforcement is supposed to imbue in the public.
- seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28PLAN C ==
01. Offer a hand job - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -17/+37What? I can't believe it encourages you to run from the cops. Does this guy live in LA?
If you think you're about to get pulled over, the best thing to do is pull over before he even turns on his lights. I've heard that from many officers.
Anyway, as an addition to #1, I turn my brights on whenever I can at night if I'm speeding. Cop cars are covered with reflectors and reflective decals and this lights them up at night. - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28People like you are the reason traffic blows. If everybody would just do 5 over, noone would get pulled over and traffic would move much quicker.
- Sp0rAdiC, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23"5) There may be a local news channel that displays where the police will be setting up speed traps for the day."
-Where is that covered on the news? I've never seen that on any news station I've ever watched. - VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -5/+22First off...why the HELL did this get to the front page? Is this written for people who are brand new to driving? Second:
2) Get to know what Police headlights look like in your rear view mirror.
Duh? Why is it that sometimes I feel a bit dumber reading Digg articles? - DoorFrame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Professional courtesy is a codeword for corruption.
- MikeyJW, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18"Is that a Hot Wheels or a Power Wheels?"
Neither. It's all in his sad little mind. - MannyHills, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15maybe for local driving, but when you've got 200 mile trips back and forth between school and home, or something else, it most certainly makes a huge difference
- psyon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Micro Machines!
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14"you should speed up as much as reasonable and get off the road at the next area you know. Once you get off the main road find a reasonable hiding spot such as an empty driveway, turn off your car and duck."
Yeah, so the cop can block off the driveway and turns his searchlight on you and then the people who own the house come outside and see your moronic ass getting a ticket for speeding, reckless driving and evading the police.
This is the dumbest advice you can give anybody. - robofetus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5366552067462745475
People who say "don't speed" are being unrealistic to the point of mindlessness. Speed limits almost everywhere in the US are ridiculously, needlessly low, to the extent that in many cases, driving at the speed limit is not only not safer, but downright hazardous.
No other law that I can think of (except maybe jaywalking) has such low compliance, and so universally. Clearly, the speeding laws in place do not reflect the true mores of American society, but rather exist to appeal to those who would pat each others' backs at their brilliant efforts to "protect the children." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10You are talking about an FOP badge. Fraternal Order of Police.
You can't get a metal one (I don't think) unless you are related to a member of the FOP (i.e. a cop). You can get a STICKER for your car if you donate money, but the metal badges are reserved.
I have a metal one. Lots of brothers and are cops. - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@ SoxFanNH: In the US at least, as well as any other country where you drive on the right side of the road, you're SUPPOSED to stay to the right, except when passing. What's worse is people who camp in the left lane(s) and force people to pass them on the right. No matter what speed you're going, slower traffic keeps to the right, and you're supposed to merge to the right (as possible/practical) if someone is coming up behind you. I'm not endorsing speeding (though speed limits are certainly too low in many places), but left lane campers are a serious safety hazard as well, probably moreso than speeders (within reason). In California, you can actually get a ticket for being passed on the right side (having failed to cede the left lane to faster traffic), though it is fairly rare.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12"Is that a Hot Wheels or a Power Wheels?"
Or perhaps a MatchBox. - hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Aside from #3,5 and 7, there is actually some good advice in this article. The most important I have to say is watching driving patterns of cars behind you and in front of you. When you notice cars suddenly braking for no reason in front of you, it could be because they saw a cop. In terms of looking behind you, cops have a very distinct driving pattern, especially when they hunt for speeders. Not only will this help you avoid tickets, it also makes you a much safer driver because you pay a lot more attention to the road.
On a side note, I wish they employed flexible speed limits in the states (as they have in Germany). 55mph on 3 lane highways and 65 on 4 lanes is just ridiculous. - berberine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Again, this isn't a guarantee of getting out of a ticket. I know of three people with these stickers and they still got the ticket. At least in New York, most state troopers ignore the stickers because they're more common than dirt.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Someone give this blogger a medal for typing out the obvious for all to read.
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I with you man.
Sometimes I feel like slamming my head onto my desk and visiting digg accomplish the same thing.
People must not be reading these types of articles before digging them. - petrograd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Speed limits are idiotic anyways and the only thing they achieve is more money for the government. And i mean A LOT of money! It is no secret that cops and even judges get promoted on how many tickets have been prosecuted. And also, studies show that speeding does not increase the risk of accident. Of course it must be within reason. No going 100 in a 25. But how many 25 mph signs have been posted when people can clearly be going 45 safely. that's why i can't stand those traffic cops.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7God damn is that a stupid commercial. "every k over is a killer". As if there's some magical force that makes 26 mph hundreds of times more deadly as 25 mph.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6jtek99: when i said "whenever i can" i meant when there are no other cars on the road.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You won't always get a hit on the radar detector.
- SoxFanNH, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Sort of related to that, I hate people that sit in the right lanes, or fly down the right lane right up to the merge point. If you aren't getting off at the next exit don't move to the right, let people get on. If people only used common sense, traffic would be much less of a problem...
- gfixler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I got pulled over driving from FL to NJ in a GA speed trap by a cop who didn't feel like going after the cars doing 90 in a 60. I was moving a full, heavy, hatchback full of stuff after college, and was just barely managing 75, so I got the ticket for 15 over, despite having cars zipping past me on both sides the whole way. I asked if he realized I was being the safest driver on the road by a good margin, and he said "You were still speeding." In 12 or so years of driving, that's still my only traffic ticket. I know some truck drivers who frequent the whole of the east coast, and they all had piles of tickets from Georgia, too. Should it lie in your way, driving around the state is another good way to avoid a ticket.
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6In addition to a radar detector, I recommend a handheld scanner. You can pick up the signal from their little computers. Saved me quite a few times when an unmarked police car was two cars behind.
OTOH, I've noticed lately that the only cops writing tickets are the ones running speed traps, seems all the other cops on the road are too busy yacking on their cellphones - bdrydyk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@Geaugan
I have no problem with someone driving at the speed limit when the flow of traffic is slightly faster. What is important is that the person understands basic highway courtesy and remains in the right lane unless he or she is passing.
When drivers fail to do this, the congestion they cause is much more likely to cause frustration, aggressive driving, and accidents. - Jsmakr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Everything in this article is common sense, at least to me.
