- frstsite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've been a customer of this company for 10 years and that is coming to an end because of this and other errors on Valueweb's part. They just don't think that a dedicated server really is important enough that they can get them online and keep them online. This is my business and I can't have a 12 hour outage turn into 48 hours and counting. yes, you read that right we are still down after 48 hours.
- MontereyDean, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, ValueWeb was always good to me. Been with them for a number of years now. But this Hostway bunch, they are liars, frauds. I'm outta there as soon as this mess they've made calms down.
- McKinleyAK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Just adding myself to the list of people screwed by Hostway. If anything does get worked out for a class action or any type of other legal action pls post it here so I can join in. BTW, I copied the VW forum in to a text file in the event VW or Hostway deletes it....at least through pg 12
- DrCHaNaS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And it seems the clock keeps ticking, all we get is recorded message on their "Premium" support!
When / if this is over Valueweb / Hostway / Affinity whatever they call themselves, thay wont see a cent! - bardok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2We have also been screwed up by this ***** migration... our clients are losing money, and we might eventually lose them... some of them are on-line shops, and their income depends on the web sites we host at valueweb... I think that company does not deserve our confidence... telling my boss we should do a real migration, from valueweb to a reliable host... (in my case, I would switch to a data center in Spain, where our company is located, so if something like this happens again, I can at least drive to the data center and kick some asses... I cannot cross the ocean right now in order to do that in ValueWeb/Hostway :P ).
- webdev1234, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I did .mht files of the thread. 40 posts per file : 5 files.
- albertclee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's not the first time they've messed things up badly for me. However, this will probably be the last time.
- Jafo232, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This is BS.. Hostway/Valueweb/Gate really dropped the ball on this one.
- vitalidea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2For those who are coming straight to the digg - the forum being referred to (if its still up) is - http://forum.valueweb.com/showthread.php?t=1344
We've been down over 55 hours and counting!!! Only 2 sys admins are working at the Hostway facility. Over 1300 servers have "issues".
I myself have said F@!@@K THIS S@U(&!#T! We've officially moved over to Server Beach - http://www.serverbeach.com/ About the same prices. Here's a coupon code to save $100 if you stay with them for 90 days - Z932833Q6G
All the best,
Paul @ Vital Idea Inc - weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+212 hours of down time has turned into 84 and still we no ETA, no explanation, no apology. On top of all of that, the support page that displays your support tickets is not working, and calling the support number yield even less info than the non-functioning support page does.
- IamSteamed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Great job morons. Next time maybe you should use your heads a little. Still down... over 48 hours already.
- truckAmuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1An opinion may exist at Hostway / ValueWeb that its TOS allows Hostway / ValueWeb to do whatever they wish, with no legal consequences. However, several legal opinions have been offered regarding VW's "99.99% Uptime Guarantee" constituing FALSE OR MISLEADING ADVERTISING. There is also a fair likelihood of its TOS being ruled an UNCONSCIONABLE, ONE-SIDED, AND UNFAIR CONTRACT.
- albertclee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Almost 3 days of downtime now...
- dustonio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I feel everybody's pain with Valueweb/Hostway, as I've been in a similar situation with my dedicated servers. I have had many angry clients who were calling and emailing me non-stop asking me why their site was down. I've since switched to Rackspace and now sleep soundly at night.
- webdev1234, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am finally back online @ 1:15 AM EST Sunday July 30th 2007 after experiencing outage from Friday 9 PM. Just keeping a track of time for any suit that might arise from this.
- bze306, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am also down. Was a customer with HostSave years ago but things have really changed. Been trying to get ahold of tech support for hours. I bet you if I called sales they would answer. I cannot believe this has taken this long. We can't all have bad hard drives.
- dschlaegel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have never heard of this happening before. It was actually up Friday night after the move. And somehow after that it went down and stayed down. If they only have 2 people working on this then I really doubt they even plan on keeping most of their clients. I have had SO many of my clients calling me thinking I scammed them, as allot of them paid their monthly service charge on Thursday, then friday everything is down (including my main site with support). I have never had a good experience of Valueweb, the server was Horrible! It's had HD errors from day one that they would never fix. Just pretend they don't know what im talking about each time. Even with that, I must admit, Host Away is Worse! I will be chaning companies as soon as I can transfer all my data off.
- shadowspawn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You know, I feel for everyone... but there has to be something else besides wiring and planning that's causing an issue. It could be power redundancy taking its toll at the new installation... not wiring or router management. I've seen power issues at every move of every data center.
I mean hell, at quakecon we got all those computers up and running within 7 hours.
I bet y'all that it has to do with power. - rjmolesa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My server is still down.
- gator99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Like a lot of people, I was caught by surprise. I did not get an email notice, nothing in the mail, no phone call, nothing posted on their website about the ludicrous migration. Hostway really knows how to hose their customers! There were 4000 servers moved overnight. Which I would estimate effects about 20000-40000 individual or business websites. That's quite a large number of unhappy folks due to inept decisions and planning by Hostway.
- gator99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you can't get any response by phone, maybe showing up in person would work. For anyone in the Tampa Bay area I believe this is their location: 412 EAST MADISON STREET, SUITE 1000, TAMPA, FL 33602
- albertclee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Been on hold for tech support for 1 hour and 3 minutes and counting... idiotic.
- ControlZ07, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They are changing their name to Host AWAY. We already bought a new server, and will have it ready to go in a few hours. As soon as Host AWAY removes the automated voice mail they are hiding behind, we will cancel our account.
Nice job guys!! - fcapria, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Over 62 hours down. I've contacted support a few times, and have never been given more than what's been on their pre-recorded message. Word is that many of the ValueWeb employees working support right now are getting the boot on the 10th of next month. Not a lot of incentive to go the extra mile. At this point it's obvious that management has knowingly decided to mislead the customer base throughout this process. I called on Saturday at 6 PM - 17 hours after a promised 15 hour outage. I was told they fully expected all servers up by 7 PM. That was an outright lie. Less than half the servers were up 16 hours after that call.
It's unconscionable that any group of people would treat a group of small business owners so cruelly. Sometime Saturday night someone should have made the call to do whatever it takes to get customers up -- instead, they keep plodding along one or two servers at a time. At this rate it looks like Thursday or Friday is likely. Yes, a full week.
I'm doing what I can for my customers, but they have to regret doing business with me right now. - weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I also forgot to note that only 15 hours of the current 84 hours are planned, that still leaves 69 hours of unplanned downtime which does count towards their 99.9% uptime guarantee. 69 hours of down time means they could, at best, they could achieve ~99.25% for the year. They only way they could ever hope to make a 99.9% uptime now is if they averaged their up times across their entire network on a server by server basis, thus spreading out the massive down time of VW/Gate customers over their vast existing customer base.
In any case they are still incompetent tools... - skinfitz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have been affected by this - I believe (with my subnet at least) they have problems with network switches because:
The servers go unavailable, then come back up again
While they are down, large parts of the rest of the subnet (24 bit mask) still ping (so it's not a routing problem)
When they come back up, the uptime is unaffected (so it's not a server power problem)
This happens to a number of servers at once (so it's not an individual server hardware issue)
Presently my box is up, so we will see how it goes. - 298th_Scat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1We were only down for about a day but we have had like 20KBps connection for over 2 weeks.. on a 100Mbps connection
- vitalidea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Let's take an extremely conservative average of $100 per month per dedicated server. That's $1200 per year per dedicated server. 4000 servers at risk due to transition of assets. That's $4,800,000 of revenue per year AT RISK.
Why would you even consider risking $4.8 Million in Annual Revenue??!
That's just ludacris. Other companies buy out companies to get their customer base, like the purchase of Hotmail. NOT to lose the customer base.
If anyone on the board of directors of Hostway is reading this, I'd suggest you consider this to be a poor aquisition. It may have been better to buy out ValueWeb and have their management run the whole show. They seemed to be doing a better job. - stratogod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1been down for almost 5 days... worst support I have ever had to deal with. I'm losing customers, fans, and clients. I don't have the up-to-date backup material I need, otherwise I would move. I firmly believe they only have a few people working on these issues... my issue requires only a HARD REBOOT. It would take approximately 1 minute! instead i have to wait for servers with 'hardware issues' to be repaired first. Don't you think there is a better process???
- weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1to tell you what a ***** tool you are for spamming this article with your crap...
- weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Read the TOS of any hosting service carefully and you will see that planned outages are not included in "Uptime Statistics". With that said I believe there is still a case here.
I fully expected that my server might be down all weekend (4-5 times longer than announced), but I never expected it to still be down on Tuesday (8-10 times longer than announced). - weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I maybe be calling you reeal soon...
- weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wow, thanks for the offer Mr J. Tharp, but had you actually taken the time to read this you would have seen that they were relocating dedicated/co-located server, not virtual/managed server. Maybe you should come up with a dedicated/co-located deal and then spam this thread again...
(Are all sales people such complete and total tools?) - tikaro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm still down. Coming up on six days with no ability to ping or connect to my box at all.
- albertclee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Now approaching 5 days of downtime...
- gator99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I originally went with Valueweb as an alternative to crappy companies like Hostway and these Verio Idiots that keep spamming here. At least they're digging the thread.

http://infrastructureprojectmanagement.blogspot.co ... - discoverkatecom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I finally came back up around 5:30pm EST yesterday. I was down for four and a half days. When I called yesterday I found out that they had many hardware failures in the move and my server was one affected, but not like others whose hard drives had failed. It's completely irresponsible behavior.
- zeusnews, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Also in Italian:
Come NON si migra un data center
http://www.zeusnews.it/news.php?cod=6003 - bflor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Cari.net has an offer too (dual-xeon for 140), and is advertising the outage on their homepage. Nothing like kicking a company while they're down, but then again, 5 days of downtime without an act of God causing it is unforgivable.

- mrf18d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0As one of stratogod's clients, I am vicariously pissed!! I know it's not his fault, and after reading all of these digg comments, seriously, what the hell is wrong with WV? Though none of my sites are mission-critical or for-profit (thank God), I know people who were affected by this and are losing tons of money. Hope VW has something up their sleeve if they want any clients at all after this.
