- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It's know, not knew. Where's the ghetto grammar choice in the the dropdown?
- snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"How did that ad knew I lived in Seattle?"
Who learned you grammar? - Stockwell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Duh!!!!
IP addresses are geographically allocated, and with some easy tools you can find out which IP address is currently active and where it 'resides' - more or less ofcourse.
Not so difficult at all.
No digg sorry. - KathyAlbrecht, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11so yeah i saw this sign on the road and said, "meet singles from virginia" and i was like holy crap mindXplosian....how did they do that!....anyway yeh that pretty cool ill digg it
- jasonhazel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7everytime i get those ads, it says virginia.... i live in ohio.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Old old news... it's all to do with IP lookups by location - various companies keep databases of these... recently did some work blocking the entirety of the philippines from a site using this.
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree, I thought this was obvious.......
Guess not............. - jk3us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.hostip.info/ is a site whose aim is to create an accurate database of mappings between ips and locations.... I say that's pretty cool, even if used for ads. If I'm forced to see ads, I'd rather see ones that are somewhat relevant to me.
- C0D3R, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The author is full of it. ISP's sell geo-located IP address data. Additionally, do you think ISP's move backbone routers all over the place every few weeks. Like duh, how hard is it to figure out someone is on ISP xyz in SF, CA by trace routing and looking at the last few hops. Try
http://visualiptrace.visualware.com/
(Java required) - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5actually.. i've always thought it was obvious..
but i suppose that's because i have some experience with javascript and IP tracing... ok NO. you guys are supposed to be GEEKS, you should've already known the answer to this. - Slungsolow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This still doesn't explain the hookers knockin on my door
- ralphmalph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"They can get it wrong, too. The most egregious are cases where they attempt to geo-target an AOL customer. Do a lookup on AOL's IP range, and it "looks like" every AOL customer lives in Manassas, Virginia, regardless of where they really are."
did u read the article? - renegade334, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeh i live in Melbourne (Aus) And my ads say sexy singles in St Kilda (a suburb of Melbourne)
The thing is i don't know if this is really a good thing as girls from St Kilda don't have the best reputation...
Someone from Melbourne back me up here
Still, i'll digg. - VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -0/+3Umm...WHY did this make it to the frontpage? Not informatvie at all. Anyone who has wondered this, and couldn't figure it out on their own, needs to vacate the internet...Now.
- ardnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"... and wondered how they knew where you lived", err no, I just use adblock (http://adblock.mozdev.org/) and never see them.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3its not difficult to find someone's location based on IP, whats new here?
- miker71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But did you meet any sexy girls?
- Floodle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't believe this site is for techies but so many people hadn't figured this out for themselves - this is pretty basic stuff guys.
- brentz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2my favorite ones are when i'm on satellite at home... i never know what it's going to tell me!
- kimzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've wondered how this works. I live in Glasgow (scotland) but the ad's always reference Edinburgh (A few hours drive away) .
I always thought it was to do with an IP look-up of sorts, nice to know they can't totally track me down. :) - jasonhazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i did read the article (if you want to call it an article). no matter what network i am using via my laptop, i get virginia; school, work, home.
- theoverlord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"How did that ad *knew* I lived in Seattle?"
I'm not a grammar nazi but an error that egregious annoys me to no end. - unexpected, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If this had been a forum of geeks, I would report this digg as lame. But considering that something as obvious and simple as IP lookup tables is new and strange to the common users, I will suggest that you use an anonymizer if you want to keep your location somewhat private.
- flowaus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're more likely to get a nice ladyboy in StKilda!
- rasice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty obvious, suprised this made it to the front page
- jellomizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I second that. Most adds I have seen are only close is because I live close to the state capital. But there are websites and software that show your desired area by putting in your ip address and it tells you where you are. For mine it covers a good area about a 45 minute drive radius around the Capital, which is a big geographic location.
- tintub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2er, how does javascript come into it again?
- dougbdl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not really that informative. Just said what anybody with a modicum of technical knowledge would have guessed.
- Genius16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2second that notion. just shows theres alot of crappy geeks on the inter-nut-web
- cal3b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, now I can send this link to my girlfriend.
She logged onto a popular torrent site and saw this "meet sexy girls" *****. Sadly they were in the town we live in. Obviously she got the idea right away that for some reason I had been using a torrent site to cheat on her...
I tried to explain why but I don't think she believed me, typical really.
Bastard adverts get me in trouble now. Whats the world coming to! - Pseudo98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nope, no digg from me... you would have thought the type of visitors to digg.com would understand IP information, RIPE and geo-location, unless they have been watching too much 24. Lets not get started on the rediculous usage of technology in that shall we, needless to say suspention of disbelief is a problem and the technical consultant should be shot, preferably by Jack using his amazing pistol skills and his bag of infinate ammo :).
- squeevey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seriously...I thought more people would have know this. I thought more people would have know how to run a trace route on an IP. Hell, that's how I figure out most of my traffic to a site. I know it's not completely accurate, but most of the people I know are not using proxies.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those sites are useful for testing your proxies. ;-)
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My IP was detected as Leesville, Louisiana for the longest, now its detected right though..
- Quarks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Same thing here, these ads always get it wrong.
I live in the Netherlands and the ads always say something like: "Hot_California_girl24 wants to meet you in Amersfoort."
Hilarious, you must be pretty stupid to fall for that one. - keithdsouza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yup true, if you have an ip with you its very easy to figure out where you are from whose isp connection you are using, which location you are from etc.
There are quite a few of commands avialable on a linux box to find that out, like nslookup, whois, host, tracert etc - WhackingDay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is by far one of the most idiotic posts submitted to digg. I'd rather see more political posts than this geek lite crap.
- jacksim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The "I use spyware software religiously" bit is from a reader question. The site is called Ask Leo.
- sofa0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally someone explained it so I don't have to explain it to my parents.
Though I am sure I will have plenty of questions to answer, still.
Questions like; "What happens if I put in false information when I register places?" - mattclare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Was it your grammar?
- mike.nealey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL...Everyone on AOL is in Manassas, VA. I grew up there, nice to have so many neighbors. Too bad AOL sucks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The amazing thing is that Maxthon blocked this page on my computer because apparently it's an "ad".
- Junpei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's always had me wondering. I just stumbled across this a bit ago and thought you people on digg would be curious to know how. Oh, and that part that I typed is supposed to say "Sexy singles in (your hometown here)". I must have deleted that part or something. Either that or the Brackets I used didn't work. Anywho, interesting read.
- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -0/+1Ok that was mean of me. Remember...Rock for Jesus. Rock for Jesus...
- mr804, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heh. One of those places defaults to New York. I had a new IP allocation and noticed it wasn't showing my city anymore.
- kurtcocain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice grammer "How did that Ad _knew_ I lived in Seattle ?" What are they teaching you kids in school these days ? Really, if you don't know grammer, I might give you the benefit of the doubt that you are spending all of your time in CompSci or Math class; but from the subject matter in the article, it looks like I am wrong. Go back to school.
- rs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most AOL customers would be *quite* at home in Manassas, VA. :-P
- Xophmeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm... I would have thought that how this was done was relatively common knowledge amongst the Digg community. Where have you people been for the past 5 years!?
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't realize so many people didn't know this. I thought this site was geeks and nerds? You guys are supposed to be smart! I do reverse DNS searches a couple times a week. It's really simple... this definitely doesn't deserve to be on here. I'm sorry but you all should have known about IP addresses and ISPs.
- ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You mean you can _enter_ your location? BWAHAHAHAHA! Time to pollute the data.
