How a bunch of young Russian upstarts humbled Google

business.timesonline.co.uk — Widely described as Russia’s answer to Google, Yandex was launched only eight years ago but is now visited by 8m people a day. To “Google it” may be the common way of searching in much of the world but in Russia Yandex holds 55% of the market compared with Google’s 21%. It is an advantage Google can ill afford to ignore.

  • inactive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5Interesting...to say the least, I take these guys way more seriously than the Cuil guys as a potential rival to Google due to their visionary capabilities and seemingly strong technical abilities. If nothing else, they have put up quite the fight against Google and are winning (which in this day and age is comparable to a fast-food chain beating McDonalds in a specific country - not an easy feat)

  • askorkin, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1i think the technical potential in non-english speaking markets (such as Russian, China etc) is often underestimated, is we are becoming more globalised, i think many western companies will not only find difficult to break into these new markets but will be facing stiff competition from them
