you're so emo. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+215oh wow, the internet told me that my barry manilow records and local artists are 0% mainstream. I'M SO ***** COOL IT HURTS
- masnevets, on 10/11/2007, -22/+166I had hoped that people stopped caring about this type of thing after high school.
Oh wait, digg users are almost all in high school. - bilbravo, on 10/11/2007, -17/+144@double051:
"only 35.32% mainstream :D"
Not picking on you, but this is an attitude I've seen all over techie forums everywhere.
You use "only" as if having a high percentage would be a bad thing. So what if I listen to some mainstream music (and like it)? As long as one likes what they listen to, why should it matter what it is?
Reminds me of my high school years when Green Day signed with Reprise (aka Warner). I had friends who would not buy "Dookie", even though it was a great album. They'd yell "SELL OUTS!" heh - seanherman, on 10/11/2007, -7/+110I'm so indie I broke the calculator

Red Hot Chili Peppers 103.80 %
Coldplay 103.85 %
how does he get these mainstream percentages? is it even possible to get over a 100%? - jordansampson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+80YEA!!!! i hate it when a band i love, who have worked really hard and sacrificed much, finally gets what they hoped for..... who do they think they are, *****.

COME ON VINCE_SUPERMAN!!! - flashingcurser, on 10/11/2007, -2/+67I remember a reporter asked Kurt Cobain some questions as he walked by, it went something like this:
Reporter: "Do you think nevermind has changed the how the general public perceives alternative music?"
Cobain: "Alternative?? (incredulously), alternative?!? We just sold 8 million albums. Alternative to what?" Keeps walking. - idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -3/+64If you're indie the scene chicks like you.
At least that's what I whisper over and over again as I cry myself to sleep every night. - veryemergency, on 10/11/2007, -0/+58I don't think my Captain and Tennille discography is winning me any hip points.
- Ramble, on 10/11/2007, -2/+55Who cares. I have my mainstream music and my odd quirky music, and I like them both.
- mrgoat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+51Because the RHCP and Coldplay are *so* ***** mainstream they get bonus points. Like a +4 Dagger.
- linkwray, on 10/11/2007, -6/+56My girlfriend listens to what she calls "alternative" music. I keep trying to tell her that Maroon 5, The Killers, Fallout Boy, Snow Patrol, etc. may be labeled as "alternative", but they are really just Mainstream 2.0. As evidence I pointed out how Panic at the Disco played at Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's, and Maroon 5 was just featured on the Today show with Matt Lauer. You can't get any more mainstream than that.
Alternative music isn't. - mythandros, on 10/11/2007, -1/+47"Just remember son: I didn't sell out, I bought in."
- DevilsLeftHand, on 10/11/2007, -5/+50I'm 28.14 % mainstream, and 100% embarrassed that I took the time to find out.
- HarryHunt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+42There's really nothing wrong with listening to mainstream music and if you listen to any kind of music for a reason other than that you really enjoy it, you're an idiot. A lot of young people will listen to anything their peers like or even to what the media tells them they should like. That said, a group of 13yo girls listening to Britney Spears is pretty much the same as a group of non-conforming emos listening to whatever they're listening to. Every since I realized that, I've been listening to all kinds of music ranging from classical all the way to heavy metal and it's great. Whatever I enjoy, I get.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+38Looking at how a Myspace story is dugg up daily, I'd have thought most digg users are in primary school ;P

- Ouze, on 10/11/2007, -25/+44I listen to lots of mainstream music. That's what makes it "mainstream". Defining yourself by the music you listen to is strictly high school level, imo. I'd say 50% of people really like mainstream music, and the other 50% pretend they only like indie bands because it's so out there (which is just picking the conformist "anti conformist" mainstream).
- jimofferman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Somehow, I doubt that all the users of last.fm together are very representative for what could be considered mainstream...
- PropCulture, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Varney, mainstreamness clearly matters because it's inversely parallel proportional to the amount of girls you get. At least that's what I was told by the smelly guy in the indie music store that had no girls in it.

NICE! - lazyrussian, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19I listen to Electronic Music - Soulful House (as DI.FM calls it), House, Trance, and Lounge music for me. I'm so "cool" that the php timed out on me :p
- Coffeedemon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Chances are they all had on girl's jeans so that has to count for something right?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21what is this seriously for?
for scene girls to pass around so they can have proof that they're more indie/underground than their friends. great.
i don't know when it happened, but it makes me sick that being more underground = being more cool. whatever happened to liking GOOD MUSIC? - modifiedbears, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16last.fm is mainstream

Have you ever heard of Ad Hominem?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem
Just because someone is 21 it does not mean they cannot understand what something was like in the 80s.
By that same logic, history professors should stop teaching, as 'how could they possibly know about live 500 years ago'
Baseless attacks get you nowhere in discussions, and will not win you any points. - Niten, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14"I'd say 50% of people really like mainstream music, and the other 50% pretend they only like indie bands because it's so out there (which is just picking the conformist "anti conformist" mainstream)."
While I'm sure that happens occasionally, there *gasp* really are people who tend to prefer independent artists for the raw, unadulterated, and inventive nature of their music. Some people appreciate and like to explore music's newest frontiers, and that's not the kind of thing the major labels tend to invest in; an album as sparsely arranged and as dependent on old-school boy/girl harmonies as "The Evens" never would have made it on a major label, yet that album has probably had more influence on the post-hardcore genre than anything recently released under the RIAA. Furthermore, independent artists seem to focus more on writing intelligent, meaningful lyrics than bands who pander to the mainstream.
You like mainstream music. By definition, that's normal. But just because you yourself can't see anything to value in independent artists doesn't mean there's nothing exciting there for the rest of us.
But yeah, bragging that you love indie music is juvenile. - randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14When I was a kid, listening to "underground" music meant you were cool. Being into the underground metal and industrial scenes virtually guaranteed my individuality right? As I've gotten older I've stopped caring about being cool, or listening to whats cool. But I gotta say, "mainstream" to me now doesn't mean cool or uncool, it means RIAA. If my music collection is "only xx.xx%" mainstream RIAA music I think that is a good thing, regardless of whether it's "cool" or not.
- doktorrocket, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Does the album you used to like suddenly sound different once other people start listening to it?
Or rather, is it that merely being a fan of a given group has become part of your identity (rather than, say, personal accomplishments or other unique personality traits), and now with everyone listening, your individualism has been watered down?
If it's the first; I'd like a scientific explanation for the phenomenon. If it's the second...sorry, that's the risk you run when you latch on to another artist's creativity as a way of self expression. A follower of a band, no matter how obscure, is still a follower. - catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Whatever posers, none of you guys know what real emo is. Now where did I put my mascara and eye liner..
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Alternative music stopped being alternative when it got labeled "alternative".
Which happened around 1987, BTW. - CaptMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10So, if digg's traffic decreases, then the digg effect kills less websites, which in turn draws more people back to digg, which increases the digg effect, yes?
- geoken, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Stopped caring about what? I think it's cool to see how successful some of the artists I like are becoming. For example, Pendulum (who's in my top 3 or 4) was up to 10% which is pretty awesome for a D'n'B producer. It's also cool to see how trends are shaping up (ie mellow D'n'B like London Electricity seems to be a lot more popular then techy stuff).
- Bahimiron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I just put in Doug Kershaw about twelve times.
The website actually disappeared for a second, then reappeared with a special Zydeco edition which told me how awesome I am.
