- synystar, on 08/20/2008, -0/+77How I Stole Someones Identity Accidentally: I was laid off and in between jobs so I took a job at J.C. Penney for a few weeks to get me by. Coming from an IT background I realized that the quickest way for me to learn the system was to jump in and play around. The company demanded that "associates" push the J.C. Penney card at every sale. So I decided that it would be in my best interest to train myself how to sign-up new customers -- that way I wouldn't be fumbling around in the software or taking up other employees time to show me how.
At a slow point in the day I pulled out the manual and went through the entire process with dummy information. I made up a name, address, age, etc.. and put in a random social security number -- every digit was the first that came to mind. Satisfied that I had figured out how to do it all on my own, I went about job as usual.
A few days later my manager called me to her office and demanded that I explain why someone who lived in another state, and had never visited the store, was complaining about the J.C. Penney card they had received that day. I had issued it to them.
I knew instantly what had happened. I asked what the persons name was, and it wasn't what I had put into the software. The address? Not the same. Nothing I had entered was related to this person at all...except for the social security number that I had "made up".
I realized right then that I could walk into any J.C. Penney with a valid SSN memorized, obtain a new card and go about purchasing things that someone else would be responsible for paying. I hope they've changed things since then. - thegrantman, on 08/20/2008, -0/+71I always use accurate information and post it everywhere with no virus or spybot protection. It's my neighbors' info though.. Who the hell mows a lawn at 6:00 am?

- tcsucks, on 08/20/2008, -0/+38It's not scary. His target blogged her ENTIRE life away. Who discusses their Father's middle name? WTF?
- Dracoy, on 08/20/2008, -0/+36"She's a friend of my wife, so just from previous conversations I already knew her name, what state she was from, where she worked, and about how old she was. But that's about all I knew. She then told me which bank she used (although there are some pretty easy ways to find that out) and what her user name was. (It turns out it was fairly predictable: her first initial + last name.) Based on this information, my task was to gain access to her account."
I feel it would have been much more scary, if it was a completely random person on the internet... - Fabbyfubz, on 08/20/2008, -0/+34My name is Todd Davis
My social security number is 457-55-5462 - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -9/+42Haha, yea I'd totally ***** Miley Cyrus.

- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -5/+19This is really scary... Imagine how many people have accounts on social networks and personal blogs, it is so easy,,, In the beginning I thought he will guess passwords, but what he did was much clever.
- Typhoon2009, on 08/20/2008, -0/+14You could still do that on a forum. Get a first name, maybe a last name as well. They might mention their place of employment, and their age. I know at least 3 people on a forum I used to visit who've given me that info.
- robzthird, on 08/20/2008, -0/+14yay justice.
- mufffin, on 08/20/2008, -0/+13except digg, it censors your password out.

- arkaycee, on 08/20/2008, -0/+11I like sites that, for your reset information, let you make up both the question and its answer. I can then use something memorable to me and yet non-public, say regarding a conversation I had in 9th grade with a friend that's trivial yet always stuck with me.
I hate sites that have only one or a very few questions to answer for password resets, for two reasons. One is the obvious, discussed here; but also, sometimes the questions all have ambiguous answers and I might not remember how I actually answered (my favorite movie? It'd probably change depending on my mood). - knightwalkerz, on 08/20/2008, -2/+13218-56-2431

- samukalra, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9I wish my SSN had references to weed, sex and geek culture.

- XX55XX, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8Lying on the Internet is no vice. In fact, it's only misinformation that will protect you entirely.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -5/+13yes ID theft really is that easy. problem is if you get caught you go to jail for a while. this is also why I keep a low online profile. there are also services for about $50 you can get people's SSN.
- awfulgrace, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8I think his point was the teaching of the lesson...
- knightwalkerz, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7is that...william hung?
- Atomic1fire, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7No its the pedo bear
an meme about pedophiles
refering to the fact that she is under 18 and legally a minor.
besides that had nothing to do with identity theft and was generally inappropriete - mufffin, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7hey, feel that smell? It's the smell of a new meme in the oven!
- MusicalFeedback, on 08/20/2008, -1/+8This wouldn't work on most banks. The bank he used had a user name login. I don't know about the rest of the world, but the big 5 banks in Canada ask for your card number as a user name. Now how do you get THAT information from a blog or resume...
- Patori, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Yeah, if you type your password it shows up as stars too.
