- Draphilius, on 05/09/2008, -3/+100I'm sorry, but aren't there far more important things for the House to focus on than the wishes of a special interest group which does NOT have the greater common good in mind? I think we could find a better use for the money that's proposed to be spent on this ***** (like health care, education, etc).
- obliviousfool, on 05/09/2008, -2/+84Hey look! The government is going to get larger again!
How come the bloody thing never gets any smaller? - dreicher, on 05/09/2008, -0/+83The bill passed 408-11. The 11 politicians with a spine in congress are:
Rep. Frederick Boucher [D, VA-9]
Rep. John Doolittle [R, CA-4]
Rep. John Duncan [R, TN-2]
Rep. Jeff Flake [R, AZ-6]
Rep. Dennis Kucinich [D, OH-10]
Rep. Zoe Lofgren [D, CA-16]
Rep. Gwen Moore [D, WI-4]
Rep. Ronald Paul [R, TX-14]
Rep. Ted Poe [R, TX-2]
Rep. Lynn Westmoreland [R, GA-3]
Rep. Donald Young [R, AK-0]
Make sure you show them some love this fall. - dsmx, on 05/09/2008, -1/+71Why do I get the feeling that this latest bill will be hugely expensive to put into practice and show little to no reward for the money spent.
- weirdralph, on 05/09/2008, -9/+72Doggone it, I'm tired of all these "czars" being appointed. It's about time we started showin' a little love to the pharaohs out there! I mean, think about it. Copyright Pharaoh. Has a nice ring to it, don't you think?
- xerigen, on 05/09/2008, -0/+62Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich. Too bad the media blacked them out when they were campaigning for President.
- ClarkNoHeart, on 05/09/2008, -1/+58Why am I not surprised to see Kucinich and Paul on there? Oh yeah, they're not complete idiots like most of them.
- fxu1989, on 05/09/2008, -0/+42brb, downloading a few movies.
- peznex, on 05/09/2008, -2/+43I usually get annoyed if there is Ron Paul spam but this does deserve some attention. Thank you Ronald Paul.
- peaceninja, on 05/09/2008, -0/+41United States to declare a new war: War on Piracy. I'm confident it will be as trailblazingly successful as the War on Drugs and the War on Terr-ism.
- jer2eydevil88, on 05/09/2008, -2/+41I want to bury this because its so depressing I just want it to go away... ;(
- Hellman109, on 05/09/2008, -1/+32Healthcare? The sick arent going to bribe... I mean donate... to them
Education? Unless you allow slavery those kids dont have money for Bribes either!
Media companies, now thats where the bribes... Donations... are at! - luvkit, on 05/09/2008, -1/+32Diggers, this is an important bill. And it is not in the interest of the American citizen. Write your Senators and tell them not to vote for this bill. In an age of ever increasing collusion between large, rich private institutions and our federal government, we don't need another bill that can take more away from the average American. Nor do we need a dedicated agency hunting art-pirates down and further overloading the justice system.
We are the people that work for a living. The MPAA and RIAA are not lead by real people. They sit on mounds of papers that legally entitle them to money for I.P. they did not create. The men pushing for this bill (and others like it) aren't artists or content creators. They are suits and attorneys that try and figure out how to make themselves more money they don't need... more of the meager salary you and I make. Meanwhile, I'm trying to find ways to pay back my student loans and other bills. I can't buy their movies and music as much as I like, because they've priced me out of the market. How many of you have to conserve your media purchases because they think $20 is good for a CD or a movie? Something it only cost them spare change 'to create.'
I'm rambling, but this is wrong. Don't fine people hundreds of dollars for pirated music. The price of music and movies is so absurdly high, they might as well consider it a fine already. - bradgoetsch, on 05/09/2008, -1/+32More legislation seldom works, ( the war on drugs ). I hope this is where alternative licensing models will come in handy. Maybe more open source structures similar to Copyleft or Creative Commons will rescue this world of pirates from the RIAA / MPAA's lobbyists. This makes criminals out of allot of otherwise law abiding citizens.
- IADTatami, on 05/09/2008, -0/+28As I write this, 1 out of every 100 Americans is in prison.
...let's see if we can make it 1 in 50! GO INSANE IP LAWS! - xyzunit, on 05/09/2008, -2/+29Goddamnit. Stop wasting my tax dollars. Now I'm going to have to actually buy music AND pay my taxes. There goes my paycheck.
- mfc5200, on 05/09/2008, -0/+23God damnit. Copyright infringement is wrong. No question there. But it is not the federal governments job to deal with crime and theft. Its their role to represent us internationally, provide a common defense, and mediate between the different states. Read the damn constitution, there is a VERY good reason that the federal government isn't suppose to have police enforcement powers.
- MAGZine, on 05/09/2008, -2/+24To Canada, Awayyyyy!
Oh wait. I'm already here. I've got an extra bedroom. Any takers? - pigfister, on 05/09/2008, -1/+21Name Shame and BOYCOTT the lobby groups behind anti-consumer.
The BPI Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
The RIAA Soundexchange Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
The IFPI Are: The same anti consumer lot as listed above!
The MPAA Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, DISNEY, PARAMOUNT, FOX. - Hangly, on 05/09/2008, -1/+21I prefer poo-bah, kaiser, shogun, or my favorite, "copyright führer."
- ism70605, on 05/09/2008, -0/+18Libertarian?
- hawkspur, on 05/09/2008, -0/+18Pretty much like everything Congress has passed recently.
- sheebz, on 05/09/2008, -0/+18...Seriously. Which one is the small government party again?
- johnny23, on 05/09/2008, -2/+19This has got nothing to do with giving away anything for free. This is about a conglomerate of corporations bribing the government into protecting a business model that is outdated and impractical in this day and age. The market has spoken, and instead of changing, these companies seek to criminalize their customer base and impose unrealistic and crippling conditions with which to consume their product.
- NuclearWookie, on 05/09/2008, -1/+17Thank God we got those Democrats into office so they can pursue the pressing issues that face us as a nation!
- osmaker, on 05/09/2008, -1/+17"There is also some doubt as to whether President Bush would sign it in its current form"
I guess he might be good for something after all... - OrangeSoda31, on 05/09/2008, -0/+15Maximum fine for downloading one album: $1,500,000
Maximum fine for stealing a physical album: $1,000
Retarded legislation: Priceless - DalamarArgent, on 05/09/2008, -1/+15All they need to do is call it a "WAR on piracy." He would sign that the second he saw it.
- SilverBlade2k, on 05/09/2008, -3/+17*insert obligatory "***** THE MPAA" comment*
- Drahkar, on 05/09/2008, -0/+13Cause we all know that Copyright Protection and Pirating is the biggest concern facing us today.
Iraq? Oil Shortage? Political Corruption? Torture? Loss of personal Liberties? None of that is important. Protecting the assets of a bunch of corporations. Now that is what we really should be concerned about.
I think you really need to take a moment and re-organize your priorities. - BlackJackJester, on 05/09/2008, -0/+13We're already tried as murderers for crimes less damaging than petty theft. Jesus H Christ.
- evillawngnome, on 05/09/2008, -0/+13*****.
- TheKrillr, on 05/09/2008, -5/+17I'm tired of people being tired.
- MrTito, on 05/09/2008, -0/+12Please let President Bush veto this. He's our only hope!
Oh, *****. - ism70605, on 05/09/2008, -0/+12Can your wife cook?
- ByteGuerilla, on 05/09/2008, -1/+13There are two circumstances under which a party wants to make government smaller. One is when they're not the party in power, and the other is when they want to make it small enough to fit inside your bedroom.
- BigManOnCampus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+11That would be difficult considering he's a senator and this vote was in the house.
- moomeep, on 05/09/2008, -1/+12wow. so basically it'll be like: dowload a song, smoke some sweet green... then get a bit more rebellious, download a movie and smoke some more. had a good time? good, now pack your bags and wait for the knock on the door. your new "employer" will be the state and you'll be wearing orange. they're glad to have you, your reputation precedes you. could that be a possible scenario? well, land of the free my ass! :X :(
- BertRussell, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10the only way to prevent this is to organize/support a lobby to counter them. That is currently the only way to effect real change among a group of amoral parasites who crave power. Threaten their power.
- kindrobot, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10This is similar to debtor's prison. There's a reason we don't do that kind of crap here.
- dmjarrington, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10They will come into our homes and take our computers and send us to jail and say we are criminals. Are we really going to let this happen?
What is happening to my country? T_T - synaesthesia, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10I'm pretty sure that WAR ON *INTANGIBLE EVIL THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO ERADICATE* is actually politican-speak for 'Excuse to funnel enormous amounts of money to the companies that lobby us the best'.
- sheebz, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9...or if ^those guys don't live in your district, vote against the incumbant. For me its deborah price, and she barely won her last election.
- Phasmorphage, on 05/09/2008, -1/+10Oh that's not good...
- NuclearWookie, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9I wouldn't think it would be that surprising. Media and Hollywood are overwhelmingly Democratic.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -1/+10taxes dollars being wasted yet again
- Hangly, on 05/09/2008, -1/+10The "not appearing in this election" party.
- Tenoq, on 05/09/2008, -1/+10*it's bedtime :p
Fail much? - c4nn1bu5, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8have we not learned anything from the war on drugs. The title Czar means nothing.
- Sendss, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8Kucinich and Paul are just so crazy, right? Riiight.
