- dashdingo, on 06/19/2008, -2/+27Written word, even if it's blogged, is still considered to be more official and "respectable" than a 20-something mindlessly talking into his webcam on YouTube about political events, and how he feels about it.
In my opinion, even if there ARE more people making vlogs and the like, written word will still prevail. Cause seriously, half the people on YouTube are idiots. - alapoet, on 06/19/2008, -0/+17I just hope there continues to be room for, and appreciation of, the well-turned phrase.
- nuclearpenguins, on 06/19/2008, -0/+13Only half?
- SemiSarcastic, on 06/19/2008, -1/+11I'm ***** old school man! I write in a real journal, with a pen and everything! You think I give a ***** that somebody gives a ***** about what my favorite pokeman cards are!? To hell with spell check, I use a dictionary *****!!!
- dood, on 06/19/2008, -0/+10I'm hoping people don't forget that video isn't always the best medium for the message. I've noticed a disturbing trend where people are putting up video tutorials for things like IDEs, in place of the more traditional text and screenshot series.
It's so much easier to skim through a regular, static tutorial to see if it describes the task you need to figure out, and you can work each step at your own pace, instead of having to pause and replay steps. - l815, on 06/19/2008, -0/+9Well the fact is, there are many people on the planet, all based on similar evolutionary structure, all sharing the common body part called the brain.
At some point, having a huge percentile of the entire population blogging about their random abouts of life, you'd expect it to die out.
Cliche is a word for a reason :P - mal1964, on 06/19/2008, -1/+7"The Blogging Star?"
- nshef, on 06/19/2008, -1/+6Holy cow, that's a terrible title.
- UknowWho97, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5Remember the Truman Show? Yea...that's real life now, our lives are put on display as television shows.....remember the end of the Truman Show?
- CaviMike, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4God I hope so. Actually, I wish they would both die.
- DrinkPaint, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4Text + Photos + Video = WIN
It's not an either/or situation. You use what makes sense at the time depending on the situation or topic. Sometimes it's text, other times it's video. Often it's text plus a video and maybe some photos.
It's a multimedia world, not monomedia. Why are they even asking this question? - kenvsryu, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4If you're pretty use video, otherwise blog.
- benologist, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3The thing is, the Truman Show was about a fake world where the guy didn't know it was just a tv show. Blogging, and especially video blogging, is far too boring to be fake.
- inactive, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3"Blogging"? People are still talking about this? Is it still 2002?
- Inverse24, on 06/19/2008, -1/+4I heard their buying YouPorn next. Amateur porn is the future yo.
- saltydawkins, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3You don't?
- goofygarber, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3Hardly. I don't think I've ever seriously paid attention to a youtube video or "vlog"
They can't be considered in the same category, so you can't kill blogging with video. - inactive, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Agreed, the awful reference was not necessary.
- MCA2142, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Inaccurate.
Blogs never had stars - SystemError51, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Internet Killed The Video Star.

(no Rick roll!) - kingUssop, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2How bored do you have to be to go to a conference about blogs?
- Atomic1fire, on 06/19/2008, -1/+3I think bloggers should embrace media along with static text
if the video adds to the topic...use it - MtheoryX, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1No, I couldn't make it to the end.
- Galaxylander, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Reading about a political debate has no emotion or expression outside of emoticons and formatting. Watching a video on a political debate involves emotion, expression and the opinions are enhanced and brightened and become more interesting and you gain more from it.
This is the reason that a student will remember more from a visual presentation with emotion and things that interest them then a text book. - mintblogger, on 06/19/2008, -1/+2Nothing can replace the written work, not even videos. They can be add-on but cannot be replacement.
- MtheoryX, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Vlogs? VodCasts? Just stop it. We have plenty of words already; many of which are underused by people already.
- benexor, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1videos still can't have their content indexed properly. tags? some people on youtube add all the words in the dictionary as their video's tags.
- Forse42, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I actually avoid the digg posts that have videos attatched to them.
Besides the fact that most people on vlogs or youtube or using a moving picture are idiots, videos just don't have the same interactivity that words have.
You can't scan the article and look for the most interesting part
You can't decide whether you think the article is relative to your interests after scanning
You can't easily quote sections
You can't easily save a video to your computer
You can't print a video
I also remember stuff better by seeing/reading it, than hearing it. - Murdats, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1video is not a replacement for text, if it was then podcasts would have killed blogs long ago.
I read blogs and listen to podcasts, I dont want to watch a video of a guy talking for 20 seconds if its a short article, videos done have links, I cant always use audio and I cant always use a screen.
podcasts are great for when travelling, blogs are great for catching up on large amounts of news - MtheoryX, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I think it's also acceptable to classify it as a snowclone: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowclone
*insert thing here* killed the *insert thing here* star. - MtheoryX, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I have to agree, partially, that video of advanced topics is not the best medium. Personally, I like text because it's searchable, and it's less demanding from a storage and bandwidth aspect; you can store a lot of specialized information right on your own computer.
However, I think that video does have a place, especially for entry level topics and introduction to a technology. Additionally, you can demonstrate potential sticking points and more easily point out what doesn't work by being able to show WHY something wont work. - drgmdp, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1and you?
- UknowWho97, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1True, but that's just my point. At least the Truman Show was a concerted effort at a television show. Blogging and video blogging have sensationalized the average, ordinary, everyday mundane routines
- StanleyKoolPrik, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Good riddance. Bloggers constitute the Texas-sized garbage patch of the internet.
- MtheoryX, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Amateur porn, I believe, has existed for as long as so-called "professional porn."
- astrotrain, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Ah the BroadBand.... classic net cartoon from the mid 90's...
- smek2, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1"the world of Web 2.0 is being driven by the moving image" -- i think i just puked a little.
- astrotrain, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1In my mind... and in my car...
Post your video in a blog and be a Star.... - kyledeb, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1While video is an important component of the web, the written word is going to continue to be central. Nothing beats just a quick written comment here and there.
- jcorn1, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Short attention spans killed the blogging stars. Even magazines have gone to short sidebars and less text. Some people will take time to read blogs. I'm one of them. Many people would rather see a video or play a video game than take time to read a blog. Yes, I think we're facing the battle for the sound or text bite rather than a really solid piece, fleshed out. And, just to be clear, I'm not talking ADD here, just shorter attention spans for everyone, less time, etc.
- GRTWHT, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1What you forget is that the literacy levels are steadily falling (if you have any doubts, simply read the comments on digg) and comprehension of the written word is suffering.
I don't find it at all hard to believe that eventually the written word will die.
Picture a future as depicted in the movie Idiocracy and I think you'll be pretty close to the truth. - inactive, on 06/19/2008, -1/+1Someone post the YouTube video of three girls doing "Internet killed the video star".
- Laloj, on 06/19/2008, -0/+0http://www.tech-exposed.com
Until google can actually break down the content within video and index it for searches the written word (typed in this case) will still be alive and well.
Video needs text descriptions like peanut butter needs jelly - l815, on 06/19/2008, -1/+1lol you're right.
- Enderpanda, on 06/19/2008, -0/+0Bring back the talkies!!!
- my10cent, on 06/19/2008, -0/+0I do both, some things are just not meant for video vlogging.
