I have not tried this myself but my guess is that they'll pull the plug on it quick (especially after the digg effect)! - crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17@rajulkabir

- mrgono3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11http://digg.com/tech_deals/Free_International_Phone_Calls
This was on digg 6 days ago. I wonder why this didn't make the frontpage. And why this story did.
Anyway it looks like a cool feature but I havent tried it out yet.
David Pogue from the NY times did though:
http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2006/10/09/09pogues-posts-4/ - rajulkabir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I'm in Australia. Tried to dial my mobile through that number in Iowa, got a recording that it couldn't be connected.
Tried again, dialing an Australian landline, and it went through. Long delay through.
I guess they are just giving away minutes to the same destinations that so many other outfits (e.g., voipcheap.com) are. The price of termination in many countries has fallen through the floor.
People who are still paying more than pocket lint to dial the countries listed above are getting screwed. - starquake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This story has caps in the title...
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12@xeno439:
They probably did have free calls to North Korea until Kim Jong Il unplugged his three phones. - rajulkabir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Sure, lots of companies offer free calls to India.
Just dial Citibank's toll-free customer service number. Or Amazon's. Or any of about a thousand others. - CeeJayDK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Congratulations - I would expect that the latency on such a call would be quite long though.
- joshman5k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Last time this happend somebody got the boot. So I suggest you don't do it. The boot has been tradtion since tradition since colonisation and is considered very important and patriotic by most of us Australians.
- Hydraulix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Is it really FREE?
For callers that have unlimited long distance or nationwide long distance plan's with their cell or local service provider, yes it will be FREE. If you do not have one of those plans the international long distance portion of the call is free, and you would just pay your normal rate for a domestic long distance call.
What's the catch?
There is none. We do not require any information from you at all. We respect your privacy and want you to utilize our services without concerns about confidentiality. We simply want you to use this services, tell your friends about it and soon we will have some other
amazing offers for you on this site.
How do I use your services?
1. Call one of our domestic access numbers listed on our home page. As noted above, this is a toll call so we recommend using your free mobile minutes or calling from a home/office phone with an unlimited domestic long distance plan to make this portion of the call free as well.
2. You will be connected with our International Gateway and will hear a message instructing you to dial your foreign destination.
3. Dial your number beginning with 011....
4. Wait for your call to be connected - it may take a few seconds. Mobile Users: DO NOT HIT SEND AFTER DIALING YOUR FOREIGN PHONE NUMBER. Hitting SEND may disconnect you from our gateway and your Mobilewill place your call on their network, at their rates, instead.
5. Enjoy your unlimited length FREE call!
Why are we giving away calls for free?
If we can gain your confidence in our company and services, we hope to introduce other products and services to you in the future.
How long will it remain FREE?
Our plan is to keep this services free for the next three years, which will take us to 2010.
Do I need any special equipment, or do I need to call from my PC?
No special equipment is required. Simply call our gateway number
from any telephone you use today, including cell phones. If you want to use your PC based services to call our access number, you are welcome to. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Care to give sources?
- crazymunch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Just Watch Out that someone in Iowa doesn't find out that you're importing brides from Kazakhstan
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6>>>"Apart from the following, they appear to be identical"
So, you're saying that if you ignore the differences, they're the same?
Wow. That was a really useless observation you made there. - Farkle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I guess Futurephone's 900 scam back in `96 didn't make them enough money. "Add another branch to the money tree. Call now and start cashing checks
in the New Year. ". You know, when something says 'free', it never is. - speezer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7more info here: http://www.futurephone.com/
http://www.futurephone.com/faq.html - xbmodder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They use TRX-Tel for originiation. They get paid by the minute the more people use it. They love the digg effect. At 2c/minute they can easily afford outbound termination.
- robdavy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's via (the story was taken from) Jupiter Research, but actually offered by futurephone.com
- Hackenslacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4because this one is a HOW-TO on it?
- mrgono3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@nmoog
This isnt a feature from skype. its from Futurephone. - inline, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9From the FAQ:
"How long will it remain FREE?
Our plan is to keep this services free for the next three years, which will take us to 2010." - flipkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just tried it and can't make called to Philippines ... I guess it's not on their list of free countries yet.
- andrebsd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For people wanting to make international calls from their cellphone, you can also use VOX with skype ( see: http://share.skype.com/directory/vox_for_skype/view/ )
I use that, it's pretty good. Just call my skype in number and vox then allows me to make international calls trough skype out, without a skype in number you can send an sms to start a call. It's not completely free, but then I'm not to fond of having my calls routed trough some unknown system in Iowa. - herculez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think you can use skype to dial any US number for free, at least til the end of the year. So calling Norway > Japan should be free through this number. Give it a try...
- leoCT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2neither do mine to Brazil.
- timlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just tried calling a South Korea mobile number. It didn't go through. Then I called a Taiwan landline with no problems. I looked on the site and it doesn't mention anything about only being able to call landline phones but I suspect that the only "catch" (if you can really call it one).
- ThePDW, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Who cares if it's legal???
- toxford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was looking for India as well but I guess their service can't handle a billion phone calls at once. Indians sure do love conversation
- rmoura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have just tried a Brazil phone# and it did not work...
- shuyunisao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I did some research on the company.
Its been around about 10 years. I proceeded to call the number they have listed, and spoke to the President of the company.
He was very polite. I do not understand how they intend to make a profit, but if you go off of the ideas of digg.com and youtube, there maybe future advertising potential.
He promised that they do not record calls, and that they are not tracking phone #s.
They merely want to build up a brand name.
I think it is potentially revolutionary idea that could over throw the Pots advantage, in international calling.
Although I do prefer Skype and such services, some people in other countries that you need to call and deal with are not yet savvy enough to deal with even the simplicity of Skype.
My verdict is still out, but I think it has potential, with the err towards caution. - crimsontwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Better than SKYPE: register with www.jajah.com and you'll be calling their gateway for free.
- ThePDW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's why you're supposed to use Skype to call this #. Milk it for all it's worth.
- rajulkabir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Landing calls on cell phones in many countries is much more expensive than placing them to landlines. This service only allows calls that are under about US$0.02 per minute. Off the top of my head, I think the only cell phones you can call for that amount would be USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and maybe Thailand.
- tmcdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry to report this one, but the numbers are SOOOOOOOOOOO busy it isn't even worth the long distance call to hear, sorry, it's busy... click! Especially if your wasting your cell phone minutes each time!
- swamyg1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what about India? Are there any companies that offer free calls to India?
- guneyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It does not work :(
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No ***** but with skypeout anyone can call anywhere from anywhere.
