No Google needed. - ophilye, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Damnit!! Now you've told all the spammers!!!
I swear to god, if I start getting phone text from girls in russia wondering if I need Viagra, I'm going to beat you all. - joshua5, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10doesn't anyone just dial anymore?
- FickyFicky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Their Google link is broken right now...here's the fixed link: http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/sendtophone/index.html
This one installs as a Firefox extension, which makes it useful if you find a text snippet on a web page that you want to send (maybe something about Ceiling Cat). - Quactaur, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Any info on whether a UK version exists? Or any other country for that matter.
- dark_helmet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6A warning to people in Canada on Telus: They will start charging your for messages coming in via e-mail after 100 or so.

35+ SMS Gateways - BobbyOnions, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Modded up just because the poster had the courtesy to point out in the summary that this is a US-only feature.
With many articles like this, the 95% of the globe's population that DON'T live in the US are usually drawn into reading an article that turns out to be completely useless to us. - elf25, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3noob q:
What's the difference between SMS and "eMail to a phone"? - stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Email to a phone is just a way for you to send an SMS message, without using a phone. Your email gets converted to an SMS message at the email addresses listed in the article, and then gets pushed on to the phone number as an SMS.
- Rileyper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Its not news newb its a HOWTO:
- merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Teleflip guesses the provider based on the exchange and area code. e.g., 650 814 **** numbers are all Sprint. Problem is, if you take your number with you from Sprint to say, Cingular, teleflip keeps sending emails to Sprint anyway, and your recipient never gets them.
And of course, everyone I text has used number portability at some point, so teleflip doesn't work for any of them. - DeeNiri, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Cool. I made a web service: www.sendthistome.com that does just the opposite. Well it's more like a personal note taker aka fast emailer. It lets you send notes/ideas/whatever from your cellphone's browser to any email address. There's no signup/in and it's all free. If you make your message public, everyone can see it: www.sendthistome.com
Try it out and tell me what you think. I'd appreciate the input because I want to add more features :) - nickj6282, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I have done something similar on my site and have never run into a problem. I don't think it's ever been used to send more than 10-20 messages/day to any single phone however.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1how do you use it without installing an extension
- amnesiac096, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1for Cellular One users (Midwest region) the email for your phone is 5551235555@mobile.celloneusa.com
of course, replace those numbers with your cell number including area code. :-) - mcnabxxx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You can check out this site which has an extensive list for the US and other countries.
http://www.notepage.net/smtp.htm - SuperJason, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1For the email gateways, are there any limits on how many emails you can send? I'm looking at having a feature on my site that lets users get notifications. If I can do SMS through the email gateways, it would be simple, fast, free, and I could use our existing email engine. I just want to make sure we're not going to hit an invisible wall.
- netbear, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Email to SMS gateways seem to add a subject field to the SMS message when it arrives. Are there any true SMS engines that provide SMS services for web sites AND have industrial strength Terms of Service? I'm not finding any that strike me as trustworthy.
- cpugeek2214, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Gizmo SMS is also a very good one. It's free.
- stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -1/+295% of the world is outside the US? Quick, math time!
300 million = rough US population (was in the news a couple months back)
7 billion = very rough world poplation
(300 million)÷(7000 million) = 3÷70 = .0428....%
So, the US is roughly 4% of the world's population. Very close. - UtahApocalyse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah I have Cricket.... No way I have ever found to text a mail to me.
- PureGuava, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Teleflip is great. You dont need to know which carrier they are using.
Try and text Jenny at 8675309@teleflip.com. I wonder what her area code is? - Asidic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks, that helps the European population much more than the original article.
- thejon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1for rogers wireless for those of you in canada... its 1112223333@pcs.rogers.com.... downside being, the person receiving the email, needs to respond via sending a text message to read the email.
- Rileyper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2vmobl.com is a verizon wireless email not virgin mobile
- voxel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately, that feature requires a subscription :(
I use this utility on the rogers website a lot to avoid getting dinged $0.15 per sent txt message:
http://www.shoprogers.com/wireless/sendpcs.asp
You can also create an 'account' that lets you do 2-way text messaging and keep an 'address book':
http://websms.rogers.page.ca/2way/
(For rogers customers in Canada) - hansonc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1nevermind
- juniorlikespie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1anyone know how to send an email with an attachment like a picture or an mp3 (for wallpaper and ringtone ) i dont' want to use a service i just want to be able to send it directly as possible
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Use your email program
- Poppeseed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Alltel users is 5555555555@message.alltel.com
Many other carriers also use this. I know Sprint and AT&T also do. - voxel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Creature2
The 'Direct Delivery' option requires subscription... so without the subscription, you just get a text message: "hey, you received an email, but we're not going to show it to you until you reply to this pointless text message and by doing so, cough up 15 cents" - fr34k5h0w, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Area code is 402. I have a friend with a cell # 402867 XXXX. Go ahead and call her. And no, Jenny is not on the other end.
- kevinmtu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Here is the correct link to the web version (http://toolbar.google.com/send/sms/index.php)
- 955701, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Okay, question. What if you do not want to use a clearing house like teleflip or whatnot, but still want to email people for whom you do not have the carrier. For example, anyone in the US can port their number (with varying degrees of success, granted) so this parameter really isn't trustworthy forever.
So, has anyone had any success with attempting to send to a carriers gateway and getting a legitimate SMTP response back telling you the mailbox doesn't exist if the phone number isn't valid for that carrier? Or are they fire and hope for the best?
Where do you go to look up the current carrier for a particular phone? - shelter, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Better list: http://textmessagebyemail.blogspot.com/

Man that was tough... I had to go to their website and click on the contact us link.... - heavyd14, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Oh, i already get txts like that, asking me to sell my timeshares and such. I didn't even know I had any! Its only one every couple months but damn, I hate having to pay for that *****. I'd call and complain but I'm too lazy.
- Chillywilly, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Useful. Thank you OP.

The subscription doesn't cost anything. You only have to pay when you reply "read" to the sms Rogers sends you (the one that lets you know you have an email). This is of great use to me in my home security setup, so I know when a motion detector is triggered. - BorsKaegel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Fantastic! I didn't even know Google had a plugin like that.
- rundavid1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I have a little bit different problem. I have a blackberry for work, but I'm not supposed to receive text messages on it. I do, however, have unlimited email access. Is there a way I can have my friends email me from their normal cell phones so I don't get charged for receiving text messages? Basically I'd like my friends to be able to send text messages to my email address. Is that possible?
- spankys, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3This is soooooooooooooooo old...it is not even funny!! All you need to do to send an email to a cellphone is for example: 12345678901@vtext.com, mobile.att.net, tmomail.com, vmobl.com...however the phone has to be text message capable.
- twisterrust, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Damn it, Me too, I will be very upset if I get emails from girls wantinig to hang out with me :D
- mynerdy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Thanks for the article. This very neat.
I just implemented it on my blog. http://wikiam.com/text/ -
