- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30What's more annoying than a dupe is someone whoring their own link while complaining about a dupe.
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Google for president?
Dumbest idea ever.
NEVER put someone competent in charge.
Especially someone who has all your emails cached. - RamanujanRedux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Google for president.
I know endorsing a corporation for president is beyond hypocritical and impossible, but I think we'd be in safe hands for at least the next ten years. - ericesque, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15In other news, Microsoft has begun construction on a massive solar reflector which will be used to block all sunlight from reaching Silicon Valley.
- isemism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yeah, it only leads me to bury the story he linked to as a dupe...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12solar power, free food, and according to kevin rose.....lots of hot women.
What more could you ask for in a place to work? - KevinAce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Very cool. Glad to see they're using their money & technology for some great things brick & mortar style as well.
- ronin9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13...and can't spell "dupe".
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Exactly.
"Hello. This is irs.google.com. We noticed from your conversation with PartyPoker that you owe us $4520 in taxes. Your Google Wallet has been charged accordingly." - KingAdrock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14A great way for reducing some of the massive bandwidth costs they just aquired
- ericesque, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11solar power != bandwidth.
- aclements, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@Subcranium:
It's not what you know or who you know, it's what you know about who you know. - mrkmrk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Marked yours as a dupe. Hahaha.
- usherzx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"...This does not include power consumed by data centers that power many of Google's Web services worldwide, he said..."
- KevinAce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nope - lay off the herb brotha'.
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmmm.. this isn't much of a surprise considering solar energy was linked to the founders about a year back, but still cool stuff - good on Google.

http://thecanardtimes.blogspot.com/2006/04/googles-hunt-for-icy-blue.html - gateway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3google becomes self aware 2008.. (skynet) .. we lost the war.. :) hahaha
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You saying the buildings won't exist in 20 years?
- dbrennan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice, but guess who did this first and currently has the largest solar installation.
Google Copycats.
http://news.com.com/2300-11395_3-6064010-1.html - TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No. Go see a psychiatrist.
- gd007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hope less pollution will make brilliant google engineers have much longer and healthier life!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Hard to imagine they could do anywhere near as bad as the current buffoons, even if they tried.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a fantastic idea, don't get me wrong... but i'm wondering if this is just Google spending money for the sake of it or are they trying to break new ground in another area. If this is a success, I can imagine the money that will be spent on researching (even moreso) newer and more efficient uses of solar power. Can't blame them for trying though... big players need to start taking solar power seriously.
- bart5986, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So is this for when Google turns into skynet so they can't be shutdown?
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK... so it only powers 1/3 of the building and that is somehow bad?
- hzmp32001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's what I am thinking... with such a large investment and all the PR that comes with anything google, they are bringing a lot of attention to alternative sources. Hopefully other large companies will follow suit and bring advancements to the technology while cutting cost for the rest of us... They are major investors in the Tesla roadster also, so they have a track record of promoting alternative energy sources.
It's a good thing. Thanks Google! - leomyhero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now Google should buy digg and solar-ize it
- miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its not anything new or innovative, except a publicity role-model for other big companies.
- Garfunkel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that is hilarious. i guess Google wants to 1-up ms on every level.
Go Google! - demnos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is awesome! I wish more companies would do this. The more these solar panels are put to use the more research will be done on them and the more affordable it will become for us poor folk who would like to have them on our own rooftop.
- 2gig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Google said Wednesday..." but was posted Monday. So either this is very old, or the announcement leaked out. Someone who works there want to help us understand which it is?
- Onibus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This story hit digg before slashdot D:
Now reuter's feeling the burn of Slashdot and Digg! - Pepe_Roni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did they say they were going to generate 1.6 megawatts or 1.21 gigawatts?????
- ineser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool, google is doing something educational
- heyitsme23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1in other news, almost all the major ski areas have switched to alternative energy, including bio diesel, wind/solar/hydro electricity, etc.
I bet one chairlift takes as much energy as that whole google complex, btw. - monergism, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4How do you figure? Solar cells are expensive and the payoff vs. depreciation is unbalanced.
I still support it. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1While I'm all for solar power, the panels installed will supply less than 1/3rd of the power used by the engineers at Google. And that doesn't even count the energy that powers their servers, which is much higher.
- IKbot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1EROEI: energy return on energy invested.
photovoltaic solar takes 20 years to make up for the resources used to make the panels.
sun-concentration systems makes much more sense. wind makes much more sense.
***** google PR stunts that don't help the environment. - coreyo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1haha! google for president-- that's a slogan to get your stock price in the dumps... hell buying youtube, and now, this crap.. how can anyone keep their money in google stock now?-- google needs to start to MAKE money with it's investments, not just throw away stockholder's money.
- popltree2, on 10/12/2007, -22/+2Damn you! You beat me by 10 minutes!
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -41/+2dup
