- orijimi, on 01/19/2008, -3/+62I just don't get it, how does a huge company like Google get away with doing such great things for civilization's advancement? Shouldn't they be buying out the other collaboration services to sell the same hosting packages for more? Tsk, tsk.
- FlyingDelorean, on 01/19/2008, -0/+38can I request one of those to put my tv shows on?
- brentinkc, on 01/19/2008, -3/+28"The array is provided in “suitcase” and shipped to anyone who wants to send they data to Google."
Do people do this using they computer and they internet connection? - slaxo, on 01/19/2008, -2/+20What? Physical drives in a suitcase? This makes me loose faith in the Google pigeon technology...
http://www.google.com/technology/pigeonrank.html - JasonCox, on 01/19/2008, -0/+16Google, I'm looking to catalog all the known torrents in the universe, if I make some kind of algorithum to search them, can I has hdds?
- pukiman, on 01/19/2008, -2/+17"their data", for *****'s sake!
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -5/+19Hell yea digga, scientists are gonna be putting they data on gizzogle yo.
- Damhna, on 01/19/2008, -1/+12Crap , I should have read the article and not the description.
- extreme01, on 01/19/2008, -0/+9Sounds to me that google wants to build an 'arc of scientific data'
- Daggity, on 01/19/2008, -1/+9"Hello, I'm a prince from Googlegeria..."
- NorthKorea, on 01/19/2008, -0/+7"lose"
- theghoul, on 01/19/2008, -3/+9Google is becoming a government entity...hmmm..
United States of Google
Googlegeria

Googlegypt - djbon2112, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6Where are these cheap multi-drive enclosures you speak of!? I've been looking for a 4-disk for AGES but the cheapest I've ever found was $500 (SATA, RAID5 capable, USB2.0 or Firewire)!
- plizard, on 01/19/2008, -2/+7yeah 250 for a crap one. you still gotta spend over 300 to get a good solid seagate or western digitial
- steelaz, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3You mean upload 3 TB?
- adamkmccarthy, on 01/19/2008, -2/+5they have been doing this for over a year now.
- kp606, on 01/19/2008, -1/+4And as the world of data known to man is opened to the common folk...
I know half this country is still going to be more interested in watching 'The Hills' or 'American Idol'. Pity. - inactive, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3Thanks, I forgot their URL.
- djbon2112, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3Anyone? :(
- localzuk, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2Err... According to the article, it was discussed/previewed last year but hasn't actually been started yet - and it's initial launch date was this month, which has been put back. Can you provide some evidence which counters the article rather than just saying 'they've been doing this for over a year now'?
- Akraz, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2You ***** dumbass. LOL
- fkr3, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2Google's got more cash than most countries... I'm sure "spend over 300" doesn't really phase them. :P
- Mutton, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2THIS IS BARELY LOWER CASE
- localzuk, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1You've hit the nail on the head there YourScarGrandpa - hosting those sort of data volumes costs a lot of money, especially in bandwidth.
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2I thought WD WAS crap.
- djbon2112, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1Better than Maxtor among others.
- Akraz, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1Omg is that a porn site?
- YourScarGrandpa, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1This enables the sharing of large amounts of scientific data without the data provider having the resources to make several TB of data available to everyone 24/7
- inactive, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1Think I could get away with requesting one of these suit cases then 'losing' it?
- krnldmp, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2No, because there is no business in hosting "open-source science data".
- localzuk, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1I think the array is likely slightly better quality than your cheap and cheerful $250 1TB drive. More likely, it uses some higher speed SAS drives (eg. 15,000RPM), otherwise, transfer speeds could be a little slow - and shifting multiple terabytes of data will take a while.
- dmoney22, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1why, google is god, they can just poof up data.
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1Seriously, I'm curious though. Why did you post a comment with nothing but a link to Google? This is boggling my mind.
- Akraz, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1LOl. Yeah maybe if it was made by your mom. Hitachi or hell, even Seagate's 1tb drives are about 300+. Multiple drive enclosures, (Dlink and Linksys NAS come to mind) are about 150+.
Where are you shopping, Goodwill computers? - EXreaction, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ... - $260 WD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ... - $275 Seagate - inactive, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1Scientific data isn't referred to as "open source"
- jf2683, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1This is a good idea because it may lead to faster advancement in research. It is like file sharing for scientist.
- fkr3, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2Right... because they're doing this just to be nice, and not because it's yet another stream of information they want to peek at.
- brentinkc, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1*whoosh*
- zoom1928, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2I don't understand the term loose faith. What is the difference between loose and tight faith? Is that a Southern American slang you're using?
- newprohibition, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1Brilliant!
- rnawky, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1"and shipped to anyone who wants to send they data to Google."
And send they data? Really?
This is why you don't copy paste and you make your own damn descriptions. - krnldmp, on 01/19/2008, -2/+2Well, that would be incredibly helpful if the Internet were not already connected to the databases elsewhere. Let me know what science data you haven't been able to download and analyze/process because it's not on Google.
- NorthKorea, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1right. this is the equivalent of "open source" scientific data.... notice carefully that is says "data sets" this could mean all ranges of unsorted data... with the collector hoping someone more competent than himself can meaningfully interpret his own data...
what would be a beneficial use of this kind of bandwidth would be something like MIT's open-courseware ..... put 100 gradschool-level courses online in audio or video format on a gigabit server... educate the world.........that would be sweeeeeeeet. - bonni07, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1I know, man! I'm supposed to be an anti-corporate Marxist, but now I love Google more and more?!
- e68895f, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1useless ? this gives access to this data to everyone with an Internet connection. it seems you don't understand the concept of Internet....
- mattrmcg, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1I thought it would be easier for them to use torrents or just a huge database, but then I realized that a majority of people in this world wouldn't care :/
But I would... - colonelxc, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1Sometimes... Google scares me.
- proficient, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1This is barely news.
- bonni07, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1It's either Google or Microsoft. I'd vote for Google any day.
