- aphexcoil, on 05/15/2009, -8/+162"This is bad news for Google's efforts to build up Apps, and to a lesser extent, Gmail, as critical business tools. It also undermines the entire category of hosted applications. If the mighty Google can stumble, then who can be trusted?"
Sensationalize much? Google had a glitch and a few apps were out for an hour or two. What about the other 8,758 hours in the year where it is running without a glitch? Just like the Swine Flu was going to kill us all, a two hour outage with Google means their e-mail can no longer be used as a "critical business tool."
Give me a ***** break. If someone can't check their e-mail and *HAS* to communicate now, they can pick up the phone.
I can't stand major news organizations anymore. They just appeal to the least common denominator. - simplycast, on 05/14/2009, -0/+119everyone has one of those days.......even Google

- cambob76, on 05/15/2009, -2/+42Thank you for not writing "GOOGLE FAIL" for a title. I love you.
- falser, on 05/15/2009, -1/+40The Google indexer found the end of the internet, and had to start over.
- Llanowar, on 05/15/2009, -0/+27I don't consider it any special news either. But there are tons of websites that go down way more often than Google does.
While no server can promise 100% uptime, Google certainly does have a high percentage of uptime. - eldridgea, on 05/15/2009, -1/+27I did to!
I mean I checked all sorts of stuff.
My email, my RSS reader, my Docs editor, my homepage, YouTube - nothing worked!
Then I realized . . . - inactive, on 05/15/2009, -5/+30neither is Google. Certainly not for any smart business.

That is all. - SitPoMk, on 05/15/2009, -1/+25Look who's talking, Twitter ...
- megaton, on 05/15/2009, -1/+21You're kidding, right?
The fact that this is completely unprecedented at Google aside, most websites struggle desperately to maintain four-nine availability, and usually land around three-nine. Google was on its way toward SIX-nine availability, which is unheard of in the industry.
To brush it off like, "Meh, same *****, different day," is plainly absurd. That's a wholly ignorant thing to say about something you obviously know nothing about. - NathanielJ, on 05/15/2009, -1/+19Have you taken your meds today?
- steelclash84, on 05/15/2009, -2/+20No IT service can gaurantee 100% up time. I'd like to see another enterprising IT unit sustain a better up-time than Google.
These moron bloggers that sensational headlines to get ad revenue sicken me with comments they make when they have no experience running business level networks. - josepablos, on 05/15/2009, -1/+18the end of days
- Wuss, on 05/14/2009, -0/+15You fail to realize that a lot of Twitter content is generated by users who rely on Google either directly or indirectly through other sources to generate their Twitter "content" that you see when you try and search on Twitter.
"@Everyone: Google is down, Searching on Twitter for the answer I Need"
"@back: Would love to help, but Google is down" - inactive, on 05/15/2009, -1/+16Did anyone else diconnect and reconnect their router/modem?
- ayeroxor, on 05/15/2009, -1/+16don't know why petersonca's getting buried. Google doesn't have any SLA's and their services practically all say beta, so get off your high horses, people. Google promises nothing. If you expect more than what they promise, you're a fool.
- DavidinBoston, on 05/15/2009, -1/+15I know. I am so frigging sick of this "FAIL" b.s.
Ooh, look how cool we are because we wrote FAIL or PWNED.
Please just stop. - megaton, on 05/15/2009, -1/+14...and more frequently.
- sexybobo, on 05/15/2009, -2/+13Not to mention that every other provider goes down at one time or another.
- ayeroxor, on 05/15/2009, -1/+12No joke, I tried 800-goog-411 about 5 times (during the outage, but I didn't know at the time) and the voice kept stuttering. I kept thinking I got a bad line, and would call back to try to get a better one, but I finally gave up and called 800-free-411 and dealt with their ads :-/
Whatever happened was about as google-wide as you can get! - nick700, on 05/15/2009, -3/+13...lets get emotional about this.
- netneutrality, on 05/15/2009, -3/+13*gone down
- Qumahlin, on 05/15/2009, -1/+11You mean if your solely looking to search for people broadcasting ads or other useless information about their lives?
- sexybobo, on 05/15/2009, -0/+10name one application hosting provider that doesn't have outages.
- inactive, on 05/15/2009, -0/+9As long as computers are around, this will happen.
- wpyh, on 05/15/2009, -2/+11Google had swine flu.

- laserdog, on 05/15/2009, -1/+10It was news for me because it was the first time I used yahoo to google something in ten years.
- FoxMcCloud1, on 05/15/2009, -4/+13Time for a new wife who loves to suck ***** me thinks.
- moses141, on 05/15/2009, -2/+10It's sad to see that journalists have gotten so lazy that they rely on some random asshats on Twitter as their primary source...
- freefalll, on 05/15/2009, -1/+9"Googlefail"? Really?? What an eloquent term, truly Twitter worthy.
It appears Twitter exponentially increases all this far fetched sensationalist crap. Twitter says so, IT MUST BE TRUE! - megaton, on 05/15/2009, -1/+9This level and scope of ***** has never happened at Google before. That makes it entirely unprecedented.
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/this-is-you ... - sexybobo, on 05/15/2009, -0/+8goog411 is a lot cheaper then a data plan on a cell phone.
- vindimy, on 05/15/2009, -5/+12care to back up your google downtime statistics with some references/hard data? sorry, i know you can't. so stop talking out of your ass.
- m6arate, on 05/15/2009, -2/+9what's yahoo?
- RatatRatR, on 05/15/2009, -1/+8You're goddamn right.
- girlsforscience, on 05/15/2009, -1/+8Actually, I've found them to be far more reliable than 'any other given website'. This outage was troublesome in its pervasiveness, however. I think it's news because I effectively couldn't work today. My job is partly dependent on searches and being to access particular work sites that have Google components built in. I think many people found that they couldn't access their communications, use an online app they needed, access alternative sites because they were Google dependent, and so forth. There's a lot of business on the Internet going on every day. Come on, it's a major communications tool. I can't really be that impressed that your nonplussed.
- kanimara, on 05/15/2009, -1/+7It's news because we live in a world where people just like to talk for the sake of talking (Twitter). Anything happening at any given moment can spawn assumptions, conspiracy theories, frustration, and joy.
- xdarkfluxx, on 05/15/2009, -0/+6@petersonca
Google hosts plenty of businesses' emails and files. Notably Google Inc, District of Colombia Government, and many educational institutions.

@vindimy
Apparently you don't read either. Google Apps only has a 99.9% up time in their SLA for Google Apps Premiere. And i'm pretty sure the standard edition of Google Apps doesn't have any explicitly stated up time guarantees. - inactive, on 05/15/2009, -14/+20Why is this news? It is not like this hasn't happened before. Google goes down just as often any any given website.
- u8eR, on 05/15/2009, -2/+7What I'm trying to figure out is how the ***** you're so stupid you haven't realized yet that I had nothing to do with the spelling of that title.
