I do research in this area myself but Google, although not part of the GALE program, has built some huge (on the order of billions of words) language models for English and Arabic.

Didn't know Windows did that, makes sense though.

Pretty much concur with what everyone has already said. This is a really excellent translation program, and the same method seems to be used for all the other language translations marked BETA. Wikipedia.cn translated decently from chinese (better than babelfish, at least), and the few phrases of english-to-chinese did ok, given my limited mandarin vocabulary. Some languages work better than others, it seems.

I'm sure this is an amazing program, and I have no doubt it is one of if not the best out there, but just FYI.

Speaking three different languages (Arabic, English, French), I've come across that problem many times.
This is a pretty neat tool, and I've been waiting for something like this for a while, but in the end it won't do justice to a real human translator..

All the ones including BETA next to them (including Arabic) I would suppose are part of the program. I can't read Arabic, but I can read Japanese and the translations are still a bit awkward. For instance "Can you tell me how to get to Shinjuku station?" creates a less than polite phrase of asking for directions. Translation isn't easy, but I hope Google can put more work into this technology.

Sure, I can translate a sentence into arabic and cut and paste that into an email or something where I need translation. But what about if I am looking to actually talk to someone? Granted, I probably wouldn't be googling phrases while wandering the souks of Dubai, but, it'd still be handy to maybe print out a phrase sheet that I could actually read to an Arab.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very interesting, and to everyone saying that it isn't work as well as it should - you have to realize that every language isn't built on latin roots, so their isn't a direct equivalent to every word in the latin word base. Latin based languages all have similar words - so you can more readily translate french to spanish, or italian to english than you can with english to arabic or english to hindi.
Interestingly enough, enter in "Blinded by the Truth" (I was referring to the media) ..it comes out as "fanatic" ..this is just an example of how the system works - it tries to find direct equivalents and when it can't it probably gets synonms and translates it. - unitedstatians, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How to curse in Arabic. - n8ter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I study the old school style of Arabic (Fus-Ha) and it looks pretty good to me. I'm not quite sure if it combines some colloquial Arabic into the mix and it's kinda hard to tell without the proper vowelling and so far I've only found one improper conjugation but all i know is that my homework just got alot easier. No more looking up the root word in the dictionary.
