- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17toys for doing a good job, none of that comes out of thin air... also having interesting spaces that allow for productivity and rest help employees be more productive, these spaces also make employees want to stay at work for longer periods and might prevent them from taking random "sick" days

- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12they've already survived one .com bust.
- GreenPlastik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Hype? Maybe (though I don't think so). Bloat? Definitely not. Google is so minimalist that it codes in ways that wont even pass validation just to cut down on its footprint. Do I think they are over-extending a little? Sure. But as long as you can afford it, over-extending is an excellent way to shake out bad ideas from good ideas. Everyone else is doing the techie version of hollywood sequels. Flashier, shinyer, crappier spinoffs of the same product.. over and over and over.
- jjafuller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Tough call, both sound pretty bad.
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Those monitors are ***** HUGE.
- lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4john608,
If you're a software engineer and your company doesn't have similar policies (not necessarily to the same extent as Google), leave *right away*. There are plenty of job oppurtunities out there that have much better, much more interesting work places. If you're not looking forward to go to work and your mind doesn't feel stimulated when you're there, you should probably get the hell out. - LeftistPersona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Fun read about architectural design in combination with the image and goal of a very new and suddenly (relatively) powerful company.
But as for john608, a lot of people compare Yahoo! and Google like that. Yahoo! has survived a lot and simply put, has experienced failure ( dot-com problems). Google hasn't (yet, if you want to look at it that way). That's why Yahoo! and Google are very similar, but different in a lot of aspects. - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Google only hires people with PhDs. I guess all of you IT people with just your high school diplomas are SOL.
- ragipy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Down already :(
- edge001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3agreed - they have company scooters and segways to get around the inside of the building. it's worth renting "monsters inc." just to see the tour of the building in the DVD extras.
- zephan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Very nice, I'd still prefer to work at Pixar though :D
- jameshales, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is the secret NSA back-room this fun?
- vectorprime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just because the dot.bombs did it, or even did it first, doesn't necessarily make it a bad idea. The bad news about people throwing money at any idea with "internet" in the project proposal is you have a lot of awful ideas getting money, but the good news is you have huge numbers of programmers with the funds to experiment with setting up things like their offices and their corporate structures the way they wanted. So even if many of the products were crap, some of the production methods are well worth exploring further.
- Momoru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The perfect working environment? Are you serious? People sitting on stairways working on laptops, large cafeterias, three people to a cubicle, free gormet meals, astroturf and bikes in a conference room, and dogs in the office? Sounds like an endless series of distractions to me. Fun place to play, maybe not to work.
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You might want to RTFA and note the part about completely gutting the buildings are redoing the interior. :)
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's hard to argue with success, but I think those offices are ugly. I'd rather not work in an environment that resembles a children's play-pen.
- gord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not so sure. It looks like a scaled-up version of a lot of modern european places.
- alchemism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But "children's play-pen" is far more attractive than "fifteen-year-old yellowing cubicles under buzzing flouroscent lights," is it not?
- pianomahnn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3While I don't work for Google, I do work for a company that understands and accepts certain practices to keep their employees happy and engaged. If a company expects amazing results from people the leaders of such a company need to treat their employees in an amazing way.
While numerous companies get rid of benefits as the company grows, I would expect google to maintain a lot of these benefits throughout their growth, as those in charge fully understand just what the end result will be. - nmcglennon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed... anyone else see the movie Toys? This looks like that factory, only with more computers.
- TheTony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps.
However, like the article noted, "Page and Brin were less interested in the aesthetics of the space—for a time they lobbied for Google’s signature lava lamps and toys—than in circulation and flow." - NeedDataFeedMe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3won't need a cattle barn in 2019...they'll be grown in factories like chickens are today.
- DuoPros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2MUST. GET. HIRED. BY. GOOGLE.
- chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i thought it looked kind of ugly, myself.. too many bright colors.. green carpet with red walls?.. eyes burning..
- MikeCortez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don’t know if anyone has seen the movie TOYS with Robin Williams, but google's new HQ definitely looks like the factory in the movie.
- phat59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why didn't the article ever state WHERE this place is?
- birdwatcher3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does this remind a kindergarden to anyone else?
Personaly I don't like the way the area looks; but then again, that's why I will never be able to be a googlionair. - hotrod1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the mirror but anyway their design looks really cool, they should have public tours one day.
- b7j0c, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2article seems dead, but if they are talking about the main google headquarters, this development was originally built by SGI.
- dmoney22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want to work at the Playskool(TM) Factory too!
- alchemism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Google wouldn't hire a Doctor of Computer Science to do desktop support, dumbass. Google's RESEARCHERS have Ph.Ds, not every single one of their (many) employees.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Me: Install a power point on the stairs or I quit
Boss : But you have a desk
Me: That doesn't get me laid. - chronarion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+02x23" to be exact.
- chewbaka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dang some of those furniture is just garish.
It looks like Ikea on speed - bigbb33, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4mmm... this will make for a nice cattle barn when google collapses in 2019
- supahj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No matter how you slice it, its just a trick to get employees to spend more time at work.
- djgump35, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wasn't this posted when it was news three weeks ago?
- tercioleal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, awesome place to work!
- RaggTopp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm sure I'll get modded down for this one, but....... isn't Google starting to look an awful lot like your stereotypical "Big Evil Corporation?" Hopefully they'll play it smart and won't have the company be dissolved because of some insider trading scandal.
They haven't started using Draconian tactics yet..........but then again it took Apple 20 years to start playing the bully role.
Talk about lesser of two evils. We can either have everything be small businesses which will have less corruption, but on the same note less progress; or we can have everything be big business and have lots of corruption, but also have lots of progress.
What do YOU want more? Progress or honesty? It's not an easy decision. - GreyAI, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This partially explains the unfocused efforts of google on everything besides search, none of their other projects have taken off, everything is beta, and if Hotmail were as faulty and unreliable as gmail the M$ flames would have no end. Two years tops before the markets react.
A company with this kind of management cannot survive in the long run. - RaggTopp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Just another thought about google?
Where did all this money come from anyway?
I REALLY hope it wasn't from their IPO. You can't go spending all your IPO money, and then not have your company turn a profit from it's pre-IPO services. That's what causes a dotcom bust.
What does google do for money outside of GoogleAds? I'd really like to know. Anyone know where I can find a copy of their "Business Plan?" - RandoMChancE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I agree. the Googleplex is freakin' sweet, and houses possibly the largest collection of rediculously intelligent people outside of NASA :D
- kolja, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2fascinating: the Google buildings were built by.... SGI. Not Google. And SGI last month filed for chapter 11.
- paradoxic, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Will see if they can sustain their current stock prices in the longrun. I see alot of hype and bloat, but time will tell.
- ATLBeer, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5http://www.duggmirror.com/tech_news/Google_s_new_headquarters_-_the_perfect_working_space/
- john608, on 10/12/2007, -25/+7The more I read about Google the more I start to get that .com bust feeling. Just read the article, and look at the ideas they have for this place. Lava lamps, play rooms - for adults, etc.
