- diggboy101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34um, it was in an mac browser
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Then don't put ***** on there that you want to keep private? Seems obvious to me.
- ChanKaiShi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28I don't care about my privacy, Google sign me up. YOu can read all my email and have full backup of my computer etc as long as you give me all the wonderfull features for free. There is nothing I need to hide but I do need excellent email and file storage solution for free.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28It seems like an internal application for Google employees, based on this:
"Not at a Google computer?" - Diseage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Right now, it definetly looks internal. It's informative, non-sensational, nice article.

read it, notice who else dugg it
calling dupe is no helpful in anyway.
Diggs dupe search could be better, i duped someone with almost the same title and digg didnt even squeak(i didnt realise it till later)
A lot of reasons one persons post makes it to the front and another doesnt.. time of submission, title or description. If they both make it to the front page it is because not enough people saw it the first time.
I really hate to waste valuable comment space complaing about people who complain about dupes but always getting dugg down doesnt seem to phase people. - vibri2001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I thought Gmail was a hoax also since it was announced on April Fool's day. 1GB of storage when the most I was getting from Yahoo and Hotmail was 25MB, I think. But Gmail turned out to be the real deal. I don't think I would use it to store everything but if I could keep certain folders synced I would try it.
- ThirstyFerret, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18no, that uses Gmail to store files. This is something completely different, designed to store, share and co-operatively edit files.
- RBotros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15More infro here: http://blog.outer-court.com/archive/2006-07-10-n48.html
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17So your saying you don't have a GMail account or use their search engine?
I think if there were gross privacy issues, we would have seen them by now in our email. - armbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Link to a mirror of the Platypus page, since it's been taken down.
http://cocaman.ch/_platypus/ - willhoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11after all, there is no place like 127.0.0.1
- krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12why not just put non-sensitive data on gdrive, and save personal/private stuff elsewhere? seems like a neat deal to me. YMMV
- rhrrs2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7DOINK!
- BlueLaser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'd be happy if Google would just let me used my unused Gmail space to store files via their virtual GDrive, especially if they provide some extension that allows me to map the GDrive as a virtual local drive (a la Window's Mapped Network Drives or Mac's Network Shares).
- mikaelc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Streamload (http://www.streamload.com/) gives away 25GB space for free (but their free account is limited to downloading only 100MB per month).
@inverselimit: subversion is great for backup (and of course for versioning), but does anyone provide free subversion repository hosting? - skarab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can someone explain this? Is it possible for a DNS registered domain name to resolve to 127.0.0.1?
(I just love digg! Something new to learn every day!) - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Right now it looks fake to me...
- Sheco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4scarab: the dns doesn't point to localhost, the script redirects to localhost.
- Maasneotek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hate to burst the genral publics conspiracy theories, but Google has been working on this type of thing for a year or two. While i have no explanation for the hotmail addresses, this isn't a new idea for them.
(see : http://glinden.blogspot.com/2006/03/in-world-with-infinite-storage.html)
and
(http://blogs.zdnet.com/Google/?p=3)
and.. i think slashdot had something about that rumor last year....
Don't get me wrong, I have no idea how they will police the content, making sure it is of legal, noncopywrited (or just stuff that YOU own) content, but it looks pretty real. Either way, if it doesn't exist, it SHOULD exist, it would be nice to have more of my files accessible via the net instead having to carry it with me everywhere. (I have like 3 usb flash drives and 4 dvd i have to carry with me).
btw Patrick Chan is a well known java/ajax developer... - Continuum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What do you care if it is a "new low" for Google? If they truly are trying to enter to many markets, their products will fail. If they are good (which not all are, but gMail, Maps, Desktop and Spreadsheets are all quite good in my opinion) then they will succeed.
Don't like it? Don't use it. - sciencebase, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What about Bjarke Viksoe's GMail Drive - www.viksoe.dk/gmail been around since 2004 acts as a shell extension that can be mapped as a virtual drive to access your GMail space.

Somwhow I doubt google is using privatly registered domain names people.
Hoax. - keithzd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7it's not the entire operating system
similar to isych works with .mac, you choose which files to keep in snych with eachother. So maybe you have a work folder on all your computers that you sych up so you can work from home. It isn't going to share your porn files with your work computer, unless that is what you do for work of course - DrumsNWhistles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Based on how Google screws up Gmail and doesn't support anything they offer, there's no way I'd ever trust my files to them. No frickin' way.
- metaphysical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Not at a Google computer?"
clearly this is internal... all this hooplah over nothing. - Sacky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With this GDrive, we could see a whole new P2P system.
I mean the google servers are pretty fast, and if they used mirror GDrive's and made a client act like BT (getting small chunks of the file from different GDrive's all at once) the speed could be enourmous.
Also with the privacy policy would Google be able to report you to the RIAA for downloading? Maybe but it would still be safer than networks like Fastrack.
Some P2P systems are currently being developed for Gmail, so maybe GDrive will be the next step... - harpreetgiani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't seem related, but at least the word is in Google's vocabulary. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/07/platypus-of-internet.html
- dafm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As mentioned by others, the URL http://www.troutboard.com/p redirects to your local IP address. BUT check out this one!
http://www.troutboard.com/c
It's the login page for "Fishing Fun". - ElectroOverlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would guess IBM...Big Blue
- fohat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5This is just the first step for computers evolving into other species. First Google's GDrive becomes a Platypus. I hear SUN is working on a SPARC Workstation To Orangutan conversion that will be the next Platypus Killer. Pretty soon, with the invention of DNA, people will be able to evolve into whatever they want.
Damn you Charles Darwin!
/the above is not based upon fact - t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On the mirror check out the top of the source! :)
- DucoNihilum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I don't think this is true... But if it was, why are you worried about privacy? Are you going to be storing your child porn here? Really, don't store any personal files/ private stuff/ illegal ***** and you will be fine.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You don't trust encryption either? I'd encrypt any files before upload to these things.
- misteral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2JungleDisk is promissing. unfortunately thier Linux version uses 100% cpu when idle, and they're not commenting on when a fix will be available. There are other S3 options as well, including Elephant Drive, and one (again, not totally ready for prime time) that acts as a real hard disk - storing chunks on S3 instead of the whole file at a time (see http://dev.extensibleforge.net/wiki/s3/fuse or http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/thread.jspa?threadID=10271&tstart=0)
- inverselimit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's easy to accomplish the same thing with subversion or even rsync. Without any privacy issues.
- Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Has anyone looked at the comments in that page's source? I found this one most interesting:
Since there's no way that would be possible to provide to the rest of the world, I guess it is safe to assume that this is a Google-employee-only thing to be used within their network, which must be blazingly fast.
Edit: Bah, digg ate my comment. Link here: http://rafb.net/paste/results/vXj5mv76.html - Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I got redirected to localhost as well (127.0.0.1). Odd.
- Maasneotek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blue laser, the program noted above works pretty well, although it only lets you store files in 10mb chunks (10mb is the maximum size of an attachment.)
it works pretty well, but its really a hack- making use of gmail in an unorthodox way not originally intended.
I have it installed though it works pretty well. - talcyone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there is already a really good service like this out there.
It's called Avvenu.
Check it out www.avvenu.com - dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Imagine if this was true.. the storage space Google would need is absolutely phenomenal.
They will most likely backup the data on their servers... and probably twice. So there could essentially be 4 copies of all your files in case something goes wrong. One on your home computer, and 3 on Google's servers. Even if they gave us all 40GB free to start.. that's still 120GB of space per person Google would have to have available. (And unlike Gmail, the users would be more likely to USE all of this space... quickly).
I'm sure the dude who lost his screenplays would appreciate an easy backup system like GDrive.
http://digg.com/security/If_You_Have_Something_Worth_Millions,_Shouldn_t_You_Back_It_Up - bluemeany271828, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1so this is like yahoo briefcase?
the big problem is keeping personal stuff on it. i dont trust it. yet. - Maasneotek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm, thats a good point, indexing would be seen as a plus for most people who would want the storage in the first place but it can work ust as well against them if someone unauthorized was perusing the content.
Then again, this is a pretty new idea (online storage of this scale, for the masses) you have to wonder what types of things google sees as legitimate to store online? - xserver2003, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you can see on the mirror page.. in source on the top there is the email of the page creator - @author Justin Rosenstein (jr@google.com) i m thinking of askin him lol
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and more about troutboard - seems its more google related
http://www.jroller.com/page/knut - Lifestory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There's actually a script called Gmail Drive that allows one to create a virtual drive on your PC. It allows you to drag and drop items on to the drive and retrieve it through your mail remotely.
I'm actually using it now, and it's pretty nifty to save some space on your PC! Here's the link:
http://viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm - Maasneotek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, i have no clue... but i was wondering that too...
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2There's a big difference between commenting "this is a dupe" and "this is a dupe, here's the original/best of the original submissions." Being presented with a better alternative allows me to digg it, bury the dupe and get on with my day.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i googled for patrick chan california and found this
