- psevium, on 11/28/2007, -1/+40"The service will reportedly include a limited amount of free storage..." knowing them and how they killed the email storage averages, their basic plan will start at 1TB and go up gradually.
- andrewcsayer, on 11/28/2007, -2/+37Google preps world domination. Actually, on second thought, wouldn't mind seeing Google being running for President.
- apsivam, on 11/28/2007, -0/+30it would be great if the service is rsync 'able
- piesforyou, on 11/28/2007, -2/+27For the 6.3 billion people in the world that don't live in the US, there will be a big point.
- badassninja, on 11/28/2007, -2/+25Yeah, now if we just had Japan's internet connections (100mbps) we would be set. Comcast is just not going to cut it. Most of my files will be staying on my drive. Plus once the RIAA hires the right hooker to give a blow job to the right guy in the US government, the RIAA will have full view of everyone's files anyways. And then what's the point?
- techpr, on 11/28/2007, -0/+23In other news: Comcast preps to ban Google storage service traffic.
- chris9902, on 11/28/2007, -0/+20I trust me more than I trust Google.
- skeetshot, on 11/28/2007, -2/+21I don't know if I trust google with my porn stash...
- sekhui, on 11/28/2007, -1/+17so unlimited is less than 1tb? ;p
- kettlehead, on 11/28/2007, -0/+14bjtitus went to the comcast school of mathematics.
- Teckla, on 11/28/2007, -0/+10Just keep your private/sensitive data in TrueCrypt -- http://www.truecrypt.org/
Then just store the TrueCrypt file on the Google (or Amazon, or MS) service. - Spamkeg, on 11/28/2007, -1/+10gspot
- sandygmaharaj, on 11/28/2007, -3/+12Dugg because of GLP theorem.
GLP theorem states that a story would get dugg if it belongs to either Google, Linux or Pr0n. - inactive, on 11/28/2007, -1/+8gdrive...
gstorage...
gdisk...
hmm wonder which one google will pick lol. - ntwrkguy, on 11/28/2007, -1/+7am i the only one who already uses google for storage, as in saving files in my drafts folder that i may need in the future?
- jxfallout, on 11/28/2007, -0/+5I would, seeing as how I've used Google Image Search for a lot of my porn-related content.
- Smalldude76, on 11/28/2007, -1/+6replace porn with "Paul, Ron".
- SkullyBocks, on 11/28/2007, -0/+5You can already use Gmail as online storage...Just use Gspace Firefox Addon. It works great.
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -0/+5I wonder if they keep the files to them, or if they add their SUPER INTELLIGENT ADWORDS system too. :/
I am using gmail, but I wouldn't give them every bit of my personal life. :P I cancled my facebook the other day. Hm, so much more time for USEFUL things... :) - jasepower, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4There is already software called GSpot: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
- GreenAlien, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4TrueCrypt is excellent. But when using it with online backups every time you change a file in the TrueCrypt "drive" you'd have to reupload the whole drive every time. Not really practical.
I'd only consider online backup if it has a practical "trust noone" setup. That means every file is encrypted individually using private/public crypto, and I'm the only one with the key to decrypt. If the online backup service offers the ability to view files via a web browser or offer to email you your key if you lose it, then the backup service can access all of your files, and worst, will turn it over on a whim if legally required to.
If Google's service is pretty open like Amazon's backup service is then the first software/service solution to only store the private key on my own computer gets my attention. It's my responsibility to backup the local key file onto a CD or something, and if I lose that then I lose all my online backups with no exceptions - that's the only real safe way to do online backups. - DefaultGen, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4Lets just keep adding things until we can spell out a sexually suggestive acronym.
- Rev0lver, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4You know, I can't figure out what that face is supposed to look like for the life of me. Constipation is the closest thing I can think of.
- Darkhacker, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4When they say online storage, do they mean for personal use only, or do they mean like a server where I can share the link with my friends? I'm in the US where we get raped in our wallets for very little bandwidth and online storage just isn't practical yet for large files. I use Google's Gmail, Calendar, and Documents services, but I keep all my heavy files on my hard drive. I'd only waste my time uploading huge files to such a service if I wanted to share them with my friends. For personal use only, I can manage and backup my own data and carry it around on a flash drive if I need portability.
- schneidafunk, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3why use google's online storage? http://www.adrive.com has 50gb of online storage for free.
- StephenCIreland, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2the google grid is here, epic 2015 !!!
- AdHaR, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Nope.
- aliguana, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Google already runs the world. May as well make it official.
- worthone, on 11/28/2007, -1/+3How about Apple?
- rheaume, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Prep faster damnit
- sekhui, on 11/28/2007, -1/+3source? honestly, i'd like to read the story.
- DirtySnachez, on 11/28/2007, -3/+5Skynet will be elated with this news.
- otakushark, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Probably fine, so long as you encrypt your files for privacy and safety before you upload them, and not rely on it as your sole backup method.
- JediPrime, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Right, because the US is the only country in the world with out 100mbps internet connections...
- armada8800, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2You can already use your Gmail account for storage space. 5 GB's is alot of space. Plus its free :-)
- robroydude, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1Thanx for the heads up, checking it out now.
- mstoneburner, on 11/28/2007, -1/+2gmail drive
- robroydude, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1If there was gdrive it would probably be free too, but as stated in previous comments you'll want to encrypt your files (maybe Google would offer this service also). Plus upload speed on most isp's makes it not quite as handy for lager files.
- thegreypilgrim, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1Surely you'd have to include Digg in there...
- DefaultGen, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1Well this article includes 2 out of 3.
- robroydude, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?p=14813
- FelixdaaHack, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1TrueCrypt is excellent....as long as you don't encrypt a corrupt file (which is really easy to do with a large porn or mp3 stash) because if you do all or most of your encrypted data goes byebye (learned the hard way)
- robroydude, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1ohhhh, that would be an awesome idea.
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -2/+2opps wrong story lol
- sandygmaharaj, on 11/28/2007, -0/+0Yup....so GALP it is.
- cowboy86, on 11/28/2007, -1/+1Damn quit bitchin
- lordsteve, on 11/28/2007, -1/+1Google/Apple '08?
- gbak39, on 12/04/2007, -0/+0a. Though I think that this is a great idea for the online storage industry, I do not think Google should dip its fingers in every new online service out there. I’m afraid that the “Google Empire” will be brought down if it begins to spread itself too thin with its resent offering to fund R&D for energy sources other than coal. I am sure they know what they are doing but many large companies have fallen due to overexpansion and could see Google falling into the same trap.
- vinnyvenus, on 11/28/2007, -2/+2They should offer 10 times free storage of what Microsoft is offering.
