- sourceholder, on 10/19/2008, -6/+57The sidebar MUST go.
- RichPowers, on 10/19/2008, -5/+54The new iGoogle is a piece of *****. I liked the old layout because it was simple and uncluttered.
- Heywoodj, on 10/19/2008, -6/+49Vocal minority? Every poll (Including ars) I saw last night showed the changes to be disliked by a good margin.
If I don't have an option to get rid of or at least move that left hand side bar Netvibes will get my eyes tomorrow.
Why call it igoogle when you can come in and arbitrarily change the way "i" had it set up. and you did it with no warning making me think I had screwed something up (until I got a cup of coffee in me) that was just a little evil I think. - notquitegone, on 10/20/2008, -1/+16I remember when the change took place.
I was at work.
I went to refresh my browser and...
Bring back old iGoogle, please. - daveisfera, on 10/19/2008, -4/+19I personally hate the new start page and I'm probably gonna switch to another site or just to the plain old Google.
- orion846, on 10/20/2008, -4/+16use http://www.google.ie/ig?hl=en as your homepage instead of .com - it's ireland so it's all english anyway, and it doesn't have the new ***** layout with the side tab
- actionscripted, on 10/20/2008, -1/+12I'd be curious to know which browser it is you're using that can't handle JavaScript that works in both IE and Firefox.
- bjornski, on 10/20/2008, -0/+11I like the old one too.
I had my modules set up exactly as I wan ted them, then they add this extra "tab" ***** to the left panel, taking room away from......my modules!
Idiots. I at least want an option to turn off those ***** tabs on the left side. - inactive, on 10/20/2008, -4/+14Because the only people who bother to vote are those that don't like it. Online polls are worthless.
- macgarp, on 10/20/2008, -3/+12I don't like the Gmail redesign. At first it looks the same, but it doesn't automatically create a hyperlink for web addresses in an email. I have to click on Gmail on the top part of the tab to get back to the old Gmail. boooo!
- PatoLucas, on 10/20/2008, -1/+10I don't mind the changes, I just want that sidebar gone
- slyzxx, on 10/20/2008, -0/+8I had my page perfect the way i wanted it and loved it now its all screwed up i don`t even feel right.
- tavisjohn, on 10/20/2008, -0/+8Or you can use .ca (Closer to home) or .co.uk
- Supergaxx, on 10/20/2008, -1/+8Its........its alright....
we can cope together, we are all here for you. - andregriffin, on 10/20/2008, -1/+8Yeah? Try opening a link from an email in Gmail. Completely useless.
- YancyFryJr, on 10/20/2008, -9/+15I, uh, like it? Is that wrong?
- inactive, on 10/20/2008, -0/+6omg - it worked - you're a genius -
THANK YOU !!! - carguy84, on 10/20/2008, -1/+6Where exactly is Google monetizing iGoogle? I see no ads what so ever from Google - and no I'm not using adblock or anything.
I expect this kind of reporting from tech crunch, not ars. - RobotBuddha, on 10/20/2008, -2/+7Already is one, pimpmyigoogle.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/20/2008, -2/+7Everybody remembers where they were when they found out iGoogle had changed. It's like JFK all over again.
- CaptOblivious, on 10/20/2008, -1/+6I really hate the sidebar, Hey Google devs, try it with a 19 in widescreen monitor in portrait mode.
I wouldn't mind the gadgets opening fullscreen in a new browser tab assuming they actually WORK that way (DUH).
By the way,
I switched to google.ca & got my regular iGoogle page back (for now at least).
I suspect that I will end up just using something else for my homepage if they insist on screwing with MY iGoogle setup.
By the way devs, I don't know anyone that uses the MS sidebars either, Classic folders are the way to go. - rayfiend, on 10/20/2008, -1/+5I've had it for a while, too. Part of the testing group or whatever it's called.
Almost everyone in the early testers hated it . I don't hate it; but, I'd like to be able to move my gadgets, and I cannot do that now. I have to delete them, than get them again to put them on another page.
Also, if my screen we smaller, I thing I might not like the sidebar thing (never been a fan of any sidebar, actually)
There's not opt out. - inactive, on 10/20/2008, -0/+4Sorry the internet is for complaining and whining only.
- oneredeye, on 10/20/2008, -2/+6If you don't like the changes, just switch to google.ca or google.co.uk they remain unchanged... for now.
- God, on 10/20/2008, -1/+4lol what
- wallclimber, on 10/19/2008, -4/+7I just logged-in to my iGoogle home page. Haven't used it in months, but wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Maybe I live in an area where the changes haven't been rolled out to yet, but I see nothing out of the ordinary.
Just as a side note, I've seen the portal pages other people use. MSN, AOL, Yahoo!, etc., and they are generally crammed with junk, visually noisy, and certainly have plenty of ads visible. - DreKor, on 10/20/2008, -4/+7Is this a feature that was just released? I've been using this since summer. I agree that it took some getting used to, but it's really pretty convenient to have expandable content from all those tiny widgets.
- shrinivas23, on 10/20/2008, -2/+5no
its really a good one - inactive, on 10/20/2008, -1/+4write a greasemonkey script for it?
- woodrail, on 10/20/2008, -3/+6My sister and I would like it put back the old way. That's 2 votes. Can we do one of those DIGG "vote up/down if you like it" things?
- desiv, on 10/20/2008, -0/+3I'm not a fan of the new design. But I use this on lots of displays, including my internet tablet, so in some cases, screen bandwidth is an issue. But I can live with it, and I realize it has a lot of benefit for people with larger screens, which is the majority.
I would prefer if they gave me the choice of where to place the sidebar menu.
I just prefer flexibility. - RobotBuddha, on 10/20/2008, -2/+5I'd considered moving everything to netvibes too. Pimpmyigoogle fixed all the problems I had with igoogle though.
- thedez, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3Home pages change. It's best not to get too attached to them.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/20/2008, -3/+5Comment Abuse: If you are like me and hate the new layout, but don't mind changing your startpage use an alternate Google country site to get the old layout.
I use Ireland's: http://www.google.ie/ig - bjornski, on 10/20/2008, -2/+4Yeah, that sucks ass. And any tagging you want to do besides "delete" is pretty much useless from the widget.
Google is ***** up. - kgbear, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2I hate the changes. Everything is squashed to the right and unreadable now, with a large white stripe of unusable real estate running down the left hand side. Google isn't listening to the 11,000+ users that have responded and would appreciate an option. I switched to netvibes.com.
- bjornski, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3Or being able to SHUT IT OFF.
- Jektal, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3"expandable content" from my widgets is what I get when I click on a link and go to their page.
I don't want to use the web inside of iGoogle's branding. I've already got search in the browser's toolbar, and I've got bookmarks. - frsrblch, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3I keep hearing about this new iGoogle, and I keep checking to see if it's changed at all for me, but I keep seeing the same iGoogle that has always been there: a plain Google search bar, with a Gmail and Weather box. The temperature is in Fahrenheit, but I can deal with that.
Whatever this new iGoogle is, hasn't attacked google.ca yet. - inactive, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3I looked at it and thought hmm, someone might like this but i I think I'll just change it back. After a minute or so of panicked clicking I discovered I couldnt get rid of it.
Surely we can have our cake and eat it, whats wrong with giving us a goddamn choice?
That way they can monitor how many people change it back, to make design decisions based on user feedback as opposed to what google knows best and dismissing naysayers as a "vocal minority".
Hmm vocal minority, as opposed to nixons silent majoirty? - Noctem, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3Whoa, sweet - Thanks for the tip :)
- histoplasmosis, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2This sidebar that can't be moved is more annoying than "The Might Blue Apple" that can't be moved. WTF was wrong with it being at the top?
- 9bpm9, on 10/20/2008, -3/+5I know, wtf happened to my igoogle? I had it as my home page because it was nice to have all of my crap quickly, but this just makes me want to change it back to the original firefox google homepage.
- djbon2112, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2They haven't changed it on the partnerpages yet, and they better ***** not or I'm not renewing my subscription!
- BicBall, on 10/20/2008, -2/+4I hate the sidebar for the typical waste of space reason. Before this change I had an Grease Monkey script that removed the header (Google logo + search box) at the top to maximize space. I checked userscripts.org for a new script and sure enough there is a new one that not only removes the header but the new side bar.
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/31715
There is a button to toggle them back on if you need them. I found that the redesign made some text and spacing smaller; all of my boxes take up less space now. Being on a lower resolution monitor I'm not even happier with my home page. - wedderburn, on 10/20/2008, -1/+2i rather like it. didn't see it because i'm normally on a .com.au but swapped to the .com looks nice with the rounded edges and the gmail widget is nice, i can delete spam without opening gmail anymore :)
- MAGZine, on 10/20/2008, -1/+2What resolution do you run? I can shrink the window beyond 800 x 600 in Chrome, and it'll still render without horizontal limitations.
Did you know you can push that scroll wheel down, and smooth scroll left/right?
Google really should have left the option, but I still don't see any problem. - CaptOblivious, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1It's a 19 in wide screen, so it's 900 wide by 1440 tall in portrait mode.
I do a great deal of page layout work so yes that's the best setup for me so far.
If I'm doing the math right that's about 15%? of my screen width used by a useless sidebar. Sorry I over estimated, it was a guess.
Vorow, I'll be happy to have a new monitor, shout me & Ill get back to you with the address to send the check to! righttttt.....
And even then, no matter what you say less will never be more.
MAGZine
Oooo yea, I want to scroll left/right for every line I read, instead of just scrolling down as I go.
Than makes even less sense than having the page render with 15% smaller fonts (which It MUST be doing if you are shrinking it) Some of us wear glasses.
I don't know why this posted at the bottom instead of as a reply the first time. - CaptOblivious, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1It's a 19 in wide screen turned portrait thanks,
And no matter what you say less will never be more.
Oooo yea, I want to scroll left/right for every line I read, instead of just scrolling down as I go.
Than makes even less sense. - enantiodromia, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1well, if the person who dugg me down is the same a-hole from dogpile i had to deal with back in the day, i'm sorry, but no, you were not as important to us as our other colocation customers, such as Yahoo and Google, and yes, you were right to think we didn't handle your issues as seriously as we did the others.
better? -
