- MattJF317, on 11/02/2007, -0/+47I thought they would go with AT&T's crappy service. That way, instead of hitting "Call" after dialing, you could hit the more fitting "I'm Feeling Lucky" button.
- look4alec, on 11/02/2007, -1/+26I hope it's gphone for verizon... verizon are such nazis with their gear... no sim cards, no unlocked phones, you must buy the software and hardware through them or you will not be using it. The application firmware Brew 2.0(making sure it goes with the phone and you purchased it) is nearly unbreakable from what I understand, and verizon will not allow any software that will be expandable, and you WILL be paying for the software, even if it is free for verizon. Even if it is just a WAP-based online app.
- EndersGame, on 11/02/2007, -0/+18I hope so too but it doesn't make sense. Verizon likes to keep their phones locked down tighter than a nun's pussy, so they can nickel and dime you for services you could get for free if the phone wasn't crippled. I don't see Verizon giving that position up and I also don't see Google participating in any scams, so I'm guessing these talks will lead to nothing.
- whatthefu, on 11/02/2007, -5/+14Verizon's better than AT&T, though.
- Richandler, on 11/01/2007, -4/+13Verizon is like the most horrible cellphone company. Why Google? Why!?
- kazzyD, on 11/01/2007, -1/+8It's not just with Verizon but also with Sprint:
http://www.techconsumer.com/2007/10/30/even-more-g ... - scottwal, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5I really hope that this is only a supplementary service, and not any indication that this is a possible outlet for the much rumored Google Phone. Also, I very strongly hope that this partnership does not slow down Google's interest in the upcoming 700 MHz auction.
If I could think of one company that I would NOT want controlling the Google Phone or the 700MHz spectrum, it would be Verizon - their network infrastructure is enviable, however their devices are about a year behind the times, and their closed architecture is the exact opposite of the direction that wireless companies should go in the interest of progress. - Naegling, on 11/01/2007, -3/+8Of all the evil US carriers ( that's all of them ) VZW is the MOST evil... Google with surely turn to the Dark Side with such influence...
- colincornaby, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5In other words, Verizon realized what big idiots they were when they were 1st choice of Apple for the iPhone, and they turned it down. For the record, I switched from Verizon to ATT. I have more bars on my phone, cheaper service than I would have on Verizon, and I don't have to pay out of my ass whenever I want any content for my phone. Oh yeah, and I can actually take pictures from my phone to my computer without having to pay for that either (or having to flash).
- Dumbledorito, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5I'm a T-Mobile customer, m'self, and haven't had any real problems with them. Verizon and AT&T, however, show up as villains in several news stories with alarming regularity. I'm not sure Google should be getting into bed with these yahoos. I fear we may see that "Don't Be Evil" slogan getting brushed aside...
- Disodium, on 11/01/2007, -2/+6Please say it aint so Google. Verizon is the worst network where i live, i dont even get reception in my house
- Jerk, on 11/01/2007, -1/+5Must be to make up for that blunder where they rejected the iPhone. Talk about a bonehead move.
- wto605, on 11/01/2007, -1/+5Verizon is owned by Vodaphone... ask anyone in the UK about their feeling on Vodaphone and you'll see where Verizon gets it
- HerrEisenheim, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3What a crappy move. Lack of good phones, locked phones, phones with disabled features, no coverage anywhere outside the US, and 5GB cap on downloads for their "unlimited" service.
Epic fail. Real competition to the iPhone comes in the form of unlocked, open, worldwide GSM/UMTS/HSDPA phones. Not locked, proprietary Verizon *****. - binaryloop, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3If they decide to go with T-mobile then I'd consider getting a "gphone". But, if they go with Verizon.... they can shove their phone right up their ass. I won't touch it.... and would in fact GO OUT OF MY WAY to avoid it. Verizon blows goats.
- Comatose51, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3Sure, maybe Castro isn't such a bad guy compared to Stalin.
- Comatose51, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3Virgin Mobile is pretty non-Evil too, even though they run on Sprint's network. At least there's no contracts with Virgin. You can go month to month if you like or just pay for X number of minutes.
- DiggOrNotToDigg, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3Why not open up the phone for everyone??
- wto605, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3The lack of SIM cards is a limitation of the technology (look up CDMA vs GSM)... I agree Verizon is horrible with their firmware... and they've even found ways to mess up smartphones with all their stupid applications you can't remove. I think google would want a better network that Verizon's... yah it's got good coverage... but their EvDO rev A roll-out still hasn't happened while Sprint has already covered most of their area and is setting it's sights of completely replacing it's network with a new data service "soon" (however, seeing as they're currently looking at WiMAX we'll be waiting a couple decades)
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3Yeah...because Google is all about love and not money.
Think the ***** about it for a second! Do you raelly think that Google doesn't KNOW about Verizon? You do. And they don't? Nope. OF COURSE they do. Yet they chose to talk to them anyway. - lonnieh, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2nobody is ever going to buy a phone that is easy to use. lets make it so you'll need to push 5 buttons to start the calculator and a minimum of 10 buttons just to get to the body of a text message. oh, and just to be fair, lets make ALL of our phones suck this bad, regardless of which phone you may have purchased.
i am seething now. ***** you verizon. i hate you. - EndersGame, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Bingo you are clueless. To illustrate my point Google has a free 411 service, if it was up to Verizon they would charge you two bucks just for dialing 411. Google wants open spectrums and Verizon doesn't even want you to be able to use your bluetooth with other phones. I could go on and on but the two companies are heading in very different directions. And whether Google is evil or not they will certainly want to maintain the illusion that they do no evil. Google won't budge on that and I don't see Verizon leaving the dark side anytime soon.
- Dumbledorito, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2And Ford used to make decent cars, Rome was the center of the greatest empire the world had ever known, and Coke used to be sweetened with real sugar.
Sorry, what was your point again? - kenvsryu, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2I hope it has UMA so that we can just use wifi to connect.
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1They have VERY little control over anything but search and ads.
- MrZeebo, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Lack of good phones - That's subjective. I actually have always liked Verizon's phone selection. At any rate, different people have different tastes.
Locked phones - That's part of being CDMA. I agree it stinks, but the same is true with other CDMA providers.
Phones with disabled features - I know used to happen a lot in the past, especially with Bluetooth features, but I'm not aware of that being very pervasive nowadays. I don't know of any features (including Bluetooth profiles such as FTP) that are disabled on my two current Verizon phones.
No coverage outside US - I recently traveled to Aruba and had great coverage. So your claim that there is "no" coverage is false.
5GB cap on downloads -- Agreed, shouldn't say unlimited. - xgambetx, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2i hate verizon...verizon is a ***** company
- Konrad9, on 11/01/2007, -4/+5Yay Verizon!
Where I can only get help in the store if I am not a person, I have to be a number.
Manager flat out refused to help me if I didn't sign in.
ONLY CUSTOMER IN THE STORE. Wouldn't help me. - MrZeebo, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Odd... with both of the Verizon phones in my household right now (LG VX8600 and Motorola KRZR, it's incredibly easy and straightforward to copy pictures to my PC using a Bluetooth connection. No workarounds or hacks needed. Maybe you had an older or lower-end phone?
- nvisi0n, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2Well I DO happen to have a sim card in my WCDMA phone. Learn the technology before you spot off like you know what your talking about.
- confusednazgul, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1I was hoping to get the gPhone on T-Mobile. =(
- SnuKs, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1I hate Verizon, but they have the best service in my area so I guess im stuck. If the gPhone drops for VZW without VZW having ANY say with the OS or what can be on it, then things wont be so bad with VZW after all.
- Firehed, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Just another reason that I was so happy to leave Verizon for AT&T when the iPhone hit. I don't care for either of them (they ARE cell phone companies, after all), but AT&T has been leaps and bounds above Verizon - not that it means much.
- iduggden, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Google has moved rapidly in the past year to extend its reach beyond text-based, pay-per-click Web search ads into a variety of new markets, including online video, television, radio and print advertising.
Google has also expanded into enterprise software, which has traditionally been Microsoft Corp's domain. - protogenxl, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1That's great an all but Verizon less talky more FIOS roll-outs
- uselessexpert, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1WHY VERIZON??!! Can't stand them! They are ridicoulously priced and "The Network" is just as good as the rest of the other carriers.
If Google thought their image was being tarnished, just wait and see if this becomes "official". It's all downhill from there.
They are slowly moving to the dark side. - iduggden, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1So far talks between the Web search leader and Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc, revolve around technology and potential business models such as advertising-sponsored services.
- Ksg89, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Word has it that the OS on the phone is going to be open, so whats the problem?
- zazzy, on 11/02/2007, -1/+2HAHAHAH
VERIZON is practically giving Google the biggest hummer of its life after they completely dropped the ball with Apple's talks.
Google's just talking to verizon out of spite. You know apple and google are actually working on a handset/OS together to destroy the world with on the 700mhz spectrum.
Puhleeease. - Nerys, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1Verizon exclusive and its a DEAD product. Verizon is the worst when it comes to locking down there handsets. On sprint they have a chance better network more open better plan pricing for users to actually take advantage of phone features. ITS GOT to be EVDO compatible though ! as long as its open evdo and has a memory card and decent internal memory and not insanely expensive (IE iphone) its got a chance to be something amazing.
- ben162005, on 11/01/2007, -2/+2agreed, hate the sim card. and love verizon and if they send a "google phone" or software our way i would love that.
- graviplana, on 11/02/2007, -3/+3Oh *****! NOOOOO!! They really must be evil. :[
- lukeydukey, on 11/01/2007, -5/+4Quit whining about no sim card. When you invest that much into a CDMA infrastructure, that is hands down the best network in the U.S, of course you're gonna lock it down. Hence why you don't see GSM sims in a CDMA network.
As for Google, good for them, just hope Verizon doesn't make the same mistake they did when they refused the iPhone. - rezinator, on 11/01/2007, -3/+2wait, aren't both Verizon and sprint on the CDMA network?
- HerrEisenheim, on 11/01/2007, -1/+0Everyone hates AT&T, despite the fact that AT&t invited the computer, the internet, C, and UNIX.
- jrseney, on 11/01/2007, -2/+1Well done with the adds digg :-D Verizons got a nice full flash add right up there for you guys: http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/5517/ggdiggpv0. ...
Btw - From someone (me) who has been in the retail wireless phone business for over 4 years: WTF Google. - peregrine, on 11/01/2007, -4/+2Guys, lets all agree. if (gphoneRumors==true){gphone=pure good;}else{gphone=Iphone.verizon();}
Im just excited about open phone, with a REAL backer. Google can do it. A phone thats good but not a blackberry and a phone thats good thats not a apple product man I'm excited. - KillerStone, on 11/01/2007, -2/+0My two year contract is up around mid 2008. The planets must have aligned and the gods must be smiling. Karma is gunna bite me in the ass soon.
- Tomson74, on 11/01/2007, -3/+0I hope they do go with verizon, its better then Sprint& ATT. I mean also, don't be surprised if Verizon buys Altell.
Sotres suck, but same goes for all providers stores. Oh and Konrad, Altell does the same thing. Not saying its right. All companies preach about Customer Service, but never deliver. On a side note, I am starting to think Digg is becoming a bitch session. -
