- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, do not get filderset G with Adblock on Firefox. Google ads are the reason why digg exists. Do you think that the owners of this site have the money to pay for high end servers and hosting? They aren't intrusive! Morons like you are going to cause more stupid obtrusive ads.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd buy my domains from Google, as long as they take PayPal.
- Potato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah seriously. Don't be an *****, the ads are not intrusive and sometimes they do offer cool things. Click em and help out digg.

Tries to figure out how this would fall into Google's plan of dominating the Internets... - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Thats what I'm wondering. Would they be giving away really domains or just .google.com addresses. Either way it would be fairly cool as google adds are less invasive than most. How often do you notice the ones on digg?"
If they were just giving away .google.com addresses, there would be no reason to be an ICANN registrar. Giving away a $5 domain name for every single free site and hoping to make that back through Adsense does not make sense (pardon the pun).
It is possible that they pull a Geocities, offer free hosting with a google.com domain that uses Adsense, and then offer hosting plans/domain registration. - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Perhaps they are just making sure no one else takes any of the different varieties of Google domains?"
Huh? That doesn't make sense. What are you meaning? - nerdsmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't they already offer a whole ton of webspace through Blogger? I don't think they would leave the Blogger brand behind in favor of providing general webspace...
- findhostcoupons, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1I am just wondering hot it is posssible to purchase domains from Google!
- xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps they are just making sure no one else takes any of the different varieties of Google domains?

How come? Blogger isn't even really mentioned on Google.com, and its a blogging service, not a webhosting service. They are two entirely different things.
Its like saying that Yahoo shouldn't own Geocities because they also own Flickr. - Webteeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What if Google is planning to open a free hosting service that offers a free domain name? I could see Google placing their Google ads on the websites. Would this be economically feasible?
- Potato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They could do a charge for the domain name and give away free simple hosting. Doteasy does that, and it seems to work well for them.
- danlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think they got it just because they 'cann' ;)
- Andi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since their latest patent explains they'll be looking at domain settings (length of registration etc), I'd say they'd be using this to aid domain lookups, and not to offer domain registration.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1jedi, its exactly what I thought.
Google does stuff like this all the time, its just that people notice it later, and think that Google is about to make some kind of move. They aren't, they are just gearing up for down the road. Its just how Google does things. - jedi55555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I submitted this information months aog
http://digg.com/technology/Google_Eyes_Domain_Registration_Market - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Indeed-very, very old.
- syneo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is really old old news. Google has been a registrar for months or more. Some poeple think that they will not enter the domain name registration business but they will only use their privileges as registrars for improving their search engine (they gained access to interesting data sources).
- jgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They could offer people who use blogger real domain names for a fee
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or maybe it's just so they don't have to find someone else to register with everytime they come up with something else... google.com, blogger.com, gmail.com....
- bobetr, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0wouldn't bother me they tend to get things right.
- eMpi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Think about it. Google is probably the most watched over company at the moment. They probably do a LOT of things to keep peoples eyes off what they´re REALLY doing. Im not sure there is a plan to do anything at all. Google also knows that they must not become a new Microsoft (monopoly) or they will loose all their goodwil...
- StephnDolenc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0don't submit old news as if it's new; people that didn't hear about it months ago don't deserve to hear about it... (sarcasm)
noclip did it right - SybotCB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are google ads on Digg? Get Filterset G with Adblock on Firefox.
- billshackle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope they start offering webspace. With google it will be a lot of space too - I mean they give Two Gigs + with Gmail. It will kill of Geocities and Angelfire and the like
- jbmicastorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google is great, and they often do things in a new and innovative way. But I do have my reservations on how expansive they are becoming in the internet world. We will just have to wait and see.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, are you positive this actually is recent, or something that happened awhile ago and people are just now noticing?
I say that because there's a lot of stuff that Google has bought into/done, but hasn't brought to the public yet and its been several years. - sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats what I'm wondering. Would they be giving away really domains or just .google.com addresses. Either way it would be fairly cool as google adds are less invasive than most. How often do you notice the ones on digg?
- sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or maybe they will give them away like everything else.
Not sure how they would make money on that one, but I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way. - zonemen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very old.
- autok2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fake
- colinodell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0old news. happened a long long time ago. i guess it could still be interesting...
- gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah; it's old news... and yeah, I'd imagine their intent in becoming a domain registrar would have something to with selling domains. On the upside, I'd forgotten all about this so I suppose it served to rekindle my anticipation to see google finally show their hand.
