My esophagus just blew up! - stalefries, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4What happens when Facebook decides to shut down or (much more likely) all of your friends decide to move AwesomeNewSocialSite. If they both participate in data portability, you can easily move everything over to the new site.
- DarkStalker, on 01/08/2008, -4/+8I've never heard anyone ever say they joined Facebook because FB pinky-swore to keep all my data private. It's always "hey, that ninja/pirate stuff's crazy, isn't it?!?"
- rnreekez, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3That's probably because most of the people you know moved from Myspace to Facebook. Why do you think people were so pissed off when they opened up Facebook to non-students?
- Canute, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Doesn't Google use an Ubuntu based distro internally?
- DarkStalker, on 01/08/2008, -6/+8I bet that they'll find a way to be incompatible with Linux in some way, ironically.
- theillest1, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Who the what?!
- myFriendDerrik, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the laugh. :)
- riah, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1web services are platform agnostic. ....?
- stalefries, on 01/08/2008, -1/+2you mean, so you can waste more time? :D
- coolbru, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1Are there any social networking sites that are not dull and irritating?
- asurroca, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Important internet celeb says "it'll never happen" + Facebook says "O RLY?" = everybody wins
- marshallk, on 01/08/2008, -2/+3That is very true. There's a serious backlash on the part of early FB users.
- marshallk, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1well, there's a pretty clear connection between them
- MScrip, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1I'll just add my friends on the new site as I find them. I went from Myspace to Facebook... and I had to find all my friends again. Or, my friends found me on Facebook. It didn't prevent me from joining Facebook, however.
Facebook and Myspace are the 2 leading sites right now... and I've got friends on both of them. When "AwesomeNewSocialSite" comes around, and becomes popular, I will move to it. But I don't see Orkut, Virb or Bebo taking over any time soon. Sure, it would be nice to move my friends list... but it's not gonna stop me from moving if I can't. - TheWindBlows, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Ubuntu is Debian based so it can also be counted as Debian based.
either way you know they are doing gentoo like things to it as they are major servers. - rjmoriarty, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1OpenID is one important facet of DataPortability.org
- cJw314, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1...and then I want other people to do the same thing and call me a terrorist because I of what I listen to, come to my house, arrest me and my family, and 'make me disappear'. -.-
- gezdaring, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0I wonder if the flap last week was the idea all along, cooked up between plaxo and Dataportability.org.
- rq60, on 01/08/2008, -2/+2wasn't there a digg article on the front page the other day titled something like "Why facebook won't join the open data movement."
looks like they were wrong. - perkelation, on 01/08/2008, -4/+4I want access to all my data. Right now, from Last.fm .... so I can archive it and do statistical analysis... (Make charts etc). Maybe also aggregate all my web activity onto a historical calendar... so I can see what I did each day. =D
- stalefries, on 01/08/2008, -1/+1You mean they ripped off infinity, and combining it with some letters? I thought of that a couple years ago, and I never complained.
- gazoombo, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0http://friendfeed.com ?
- rjmoriarty, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0I doubt it's that clever, but it is certainly the reason Google and Facebook have made this ove.
- gm33, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0Not true. Almost all the people who signed up for Facebook in its early inception did so because of the exclusiveness and the privacy features that was/is so easy to navigate and use. It is still easy to secure your data and privacy. (I cannot speak, however, on what Facebook plans to do with your data in the future).
- gm33, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0Do you want a cookie or a medal? buried.
- AndrewBaron, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0Hm, -4 diggs on the comment so far. Note to self: Keep Star Wars references private.
- drewolanoff, on 06/10/2008, -3/+2great group of minds on this one.
- chemdiva, on 01/08/2008, -1/+0as a non-computer-geek kind of geek, i only first heard about the idea of user-centric identity management about two weeks ago - but i instantly fell in love - if data portability takes hold - maybe it would push identity management forward too? Or maybe i live in my own special little utopia...
- MScrip, on 01/08/2008, -5/+4I guess I don't see what "data portability" is all about. I personally don't have much "data" on Facebook that I would need to "move" to another service. I only use Facebook for messaging my friends, and easy photo sharing between said friends. I don't use Facebook as a data warehouse. To me, Facebook is a messaging client and photo site.
No matter what new services Facebook adds... I still use it for those original tasks. Site like Facebook and Myspace are ways to communicate with my friends. It's my address book. I hardly have anyone's email address anymore... it's easier to find someone on Facebook and click "add friend" and send a message that way. - MerrBrans, on 01/08/2008, -1/+0Reminds me a lot of the early discussion over web services and APIs -- "if we can solve the issues over privacy and compatibility..." well *we* haven't solved all of them; too many layers. But the bigger message is that FB and Goog are not going to let anyone else set policy, I'm guessing.
- danielabarbosa, on 01/08/2008, -4/+1Great news in getting some major support from the companies that hold most of your online data to agree to look at dataportability standard. see dataportability.org for more information
- icegoddess13, on 01/08/2008, -4/+1I've been going through and deleting all evidence that I've been on Facebook bit-by-bit. This is just more incentive for me to do so.
- BusinessGolf, on 01/08/2008, -4/+1I am still looking up the definition of 'dystopian'. GMAFB, this announcement will not effect the majority of businesses.
- kayjay, on 01/08/2008, -3/+0isnt this something like OpenID ?
- AndrewBaron, on 01/08/2008, -4/+0The battle station is heavily shielded and carries a firepower greater than half the star fleet. It's defenses are designed around a direct, large-scale assault. A small one-man fighter should be able to penetrate the outer defense. Until this battle station is fully operational, we are vulnerable.
- alberto24, on 01/08/2008, -5/+1yet another silicon valley a-list play:
http://www.centernetworks.com/dataportability-goog ... - spreadfunkyness, on 01/08/2008, -4/+0let's hope for the best
- Genuine, on 01/08/2008, -6/+2Wonder what everyone will react to this given the Scoble flap from last week?
- BenTrem, on 01/08/2008, -7/+3Having big entities in working groups is not always an un-alloyed good. Just look at the controversy in W3C HTMLWG. But I'm happy Brad's the google rep ... the person who designed LJ (from the ground up!) hasta have a sense of community dynamics.
- slip3d, on 01/08/2008, -4/+0well so much for having our data private ...
I wonder if there will be an op out options - gezdaring, on 01/08/2008, -9/+4I think non-geeks who use FB and don't fully understand web community dynamics will freak. I think one of the main reasons FB took off is the promise of data privacy.
- praveenmarkandu, on 01/08/2008, -6/+1kinda ripped off the fedora logo there....slightly
- entrophize, on 01/08/2008, -8/+3How the hell is this considered 'news'?
SOME of us are actually older than 15. - VaporBro, on 01/08/2008, -9/+4Boobs are, by far, the greatest things...ever
- freebird640, on 01/08/2008, -6/+0facebook killed my dog
- bdette, on 01/08/2008, -6/+0I just read an article about how facebook is going to be more popular.
