- eq2s, on 06/14/2009, -5/+65The name was inspired by the Firefly television series in which a Wave is an electronic communication.
Google should use its vast wealth to fund more Firefly episodes in addition to making cool communication software. - adremali, on 06/14/2009, -1/+23This is very impressive.
- invokez, on 06/14/2009, -1/+19"Q:i wud like to know wht more features r going to b added up into Wave and mostly imp is when can it b made access to evryone "
seriously? wtf is this youtube? - benbrooks101, on 06/14/2009, -2/+14Why use twitter for an interview?
The 140 char limit leads to ridiculously useless answers and sometimes even questions. - Pushkin, on 06/14/2009, -3/+15Where is the digg up twice button?
- drewhoo, on 06/14/2009, -1/+13Why waste a comment when you can type define:whinging into google and have an answer in 5 seconds?
- DickBreath, on 06/14/2009, -0/+11Someone could have said the same thing about email, usenet, or the whole of the Internet a few decades ago. Or about the web a few years ago. Yet it transformed the world. You don't see any real world use because you lack vision. When static web pages first appeared, only a few would have imagined dynamic Web 2.0 ajax web sites that would transform the way people communicate and interact.
Watch the wave demo. The point is extreme real time shared editing of data. With plug-in's that data could be anything. They demoed a couple games, but imagine other possibilities. Imagine a plug in to enable real-time shared editing of a vector drawing. Or a 3D model. Shared calendars and contact lists. Shared browser bookmarks. Shared project data and charts. Imagine integrating Google Docs and Spreadsheets with Wave. Imagine some kind of next-generation source code control system where your changes show up in my development tool in real time -- perhaps atomically when you do a commit. (Remember Wave allows backing up and playback of the entire wave.)
Trying to explain to someone what Wave is, is like trying to tell someone in 1977 what a spreadsheet is. You can explain what you could do with a spreadsheet, but it was difficult to explain what it essentially is. It enables a whole lot of things. - ultrafez, on 06/14/2009, -0/+9http://tinyurl.com/d6zhwc
- Myztry, on 06/14/2009, -0/+7It's part of the language of the English people.
English is a fascinating language. You should learn it. - bloodhound01, on 06/14/2009, -0/+6Cloud Computing is the future of computers, all your necessary apps will all be web-based no more need to install stuff onto your harddrive, no worrying about updates because they will all be server side instead of client side, access to all your information, files, pictures, music, video, etc from anywhere in the entire world from your cellphone or computer. Hard-drives will become somewhat obselete.
Google is a huge advocate of this and they are slowly working their way to make this a reality. Wave is just another step in that direction.
SIDENOTE: ICQ had real-time typing back in like... 1997 or whatever so thats not even anything new. - vectoor, on 06/14/2009, -0/+6The comment by arizonagroove above is a bit of a spoiler. If you haven't seen serenity, do not press show...
- hmemcpy, on 06/14/2009, -0/+5They need to do way instain mother> who kill thier babbys. becuse these babby cant frigth back?
- unusualbob, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3Only took a few minutes to find the login page: https://www.google.com/a/wavesandbox.com/LoginActi ...
Unfortunately the accounts are Wave specific so my google account didn't work :( - randoof, on 06/14/2009, -2/+5no, whinging is something English people do. Same as whining really, but pronounced with "winjing".
- TDDebug, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3No you ***** off.
- SquareWheel, on 06/15/2009, -0/+3Jeez, why am I so afraid to click tinyurl links?
- PsychoBrat, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3It's somebody who doesn't understand the purpose of limiting tweets to 140 characters.
- mrBitch, on 06/15/2009, -0/+3Oooh, predictions! Let me try this one out :
Google Wave will be bigger than Gmail, and the tech press will headline articles like these :
1. Google Tidal Wave washes over Gmail.
2. Google Waves "hello" to iPhone.
3. Microsoft releases new Wave killer : "Microsoft Bong".
4. Microsoft renames "Bong" to "Live Ripple". - theaceoffire, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3I want the "Group Slideshow creator" thing... Large number of people working together to create a photo album.
Also, I want that "playback" feature... it would make forwarding messages easier for the recipient to understand. - anom1234, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3Something tells me people will come up with a lot of inventive ways to use Google wave that go beyond the "chat room" stuff we see now.
Personally I'm already envisioning ways I might use it to keep online notes and things like that. - MtheoryX, on 06/14/2009, -1/+3"Has Google ran out of innovative ideas alredy"
Or maybe your limited vision is the problem? Perhaps Google, and everyone else excited about Wave, see something you cannot? - PsychoBrat, on 06/14/2009, -1/+3Get enough people involved, and some will figure out how to ask a good question concisely.
- DeanMix1234, on 06/15/2009, -1/+3I still don't find the value with this..Just looks like they are trying to copy what Trillian folks have already done..and they have done a better job...http://www.trillianastra.com/learn/tour-interop.ht ...
Google..if you don't have anything better to do...why don't you just conentrate on your caching machine??? You do realize the Bing WILL eventually catch up...MS folks are true hard core fighters..they do not give up..That's why I like them.. - 7aji, on 06/15/2009, -0/+2I'm sure they do, just look at what they've done with you.
- mrBitch, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1You, your buddy, and the horse you rode in on ...
- mrBitch, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1RE: " .. Trying to explain to someone what Wave is, is like trying to tell someone in 1977 what a spreadsheet is. You can explain what you could do with a spreadsheet, but it was difficult to explain what it essentially is... "
Agreed, and well said.
@ Johnbinarystar, RE: " .. Beyond goofing off and acting like 12 year olds in chat, I don't see any real world use for this."
That sounds eerily familiar :
" .. Nor does he refrain from shooting off his mouth – often to his own detriment.
One of the most notable of many notable Dvorak quotes appeared in 1984 when he blurted, “The Macintosh uses an experimental pointing device called a 'mouse.' There is no evidence that people want to use these things.”
http://news.digitaltrends.com/feature/116/10-most- ... - mrBitch, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1Sidenote: ICQ did not have real-time typing in a web browser.
Also note: Google Wave will not only work on all (standards compliant) web browsers, but it will work regardless of you using a netbook running Linux, or a PC running Windows, or a Mac running OSX, or any smart phone that runs a web browser that is standards compliant... - ace429k, on 06/14/2009, -1/+2doesn't look like ppl agree
- DeanMix1234, on 06/14/2009, -3/+4Realistically speaking..I am not sure what value adding all these apps togather is brining..really? I am unable to think of a scenario or scenarios that would make me use all the features togather on a regular basis...Has Google ran out of innovative ideas alredy..and started packaging individual products in bundle and Waving it out..Cummon guys...
- MtheoryX, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1Oh, I'm definitely speaking for myself, and I am quite enthusiastic.
Your reading negative opinions online does not at all imply that there aren't a lot of excited people out there.
It just shows that no matter the subject, there will be people that have a negative opinion... think of it as "rule 34" of douchbagginess. - inactive, on 06/14/2009, -3/+4"i wud like to know wht more features r going to b"
Really? Twitter-ese? Give me a break. - mrBitch, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1RE: " ... MS folks are true hard core fighters..they do not give up..That's why I like them.."
You're cute when you're angry. - akatsuki, on 06/14/2009, -1/+2One example:
Imagine keeping one app where you could track your blog comments, digg comments, mail, chat, forum comments...
In fact, you could just run a blog or twitter style site right out of Wave. If they add some FOAF functionality, it could essentially replace facebook and twitter with a decentralized P2P style network, which would be pretty awesome in itself.
Basically it should make the web a lot more conversational in nature. Versus a current model where you have people making comments but then not following up since they lose track.
Nothing it is doing is remarkable in itself (well some of the AJAX is), but it is rather the combination of technologies that is the great idea. - 7aji, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1It looks like a better version of my iGoogle page. Only the Google stuff though. Can't wait to use it :)
- NOD32user, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1ahh how about for free?
http://www.willtech.com.au/delivers/GoogleWave - tvtinh, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1I got one from Google and another 20 invites to share. It is not 8 invites but 20, I am a lucky man. If you want to get one. Please drop by at http://en.blogviet.info and leave your comment, email and URL. Hope you can win, the first one has just been announced 5 minutes ago.
- esc27, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Cloud computing is awesome. Just ask all those Kodak Website users who just lost their pictures when the TOS/TOU for that site changed...
- NOD32user, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1Yes, you are missing something.
- mrBitch, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1@ SquareWheel, if you're afraid of tinyurl links, then let me assist you with this one :
http://bit.ly/lmgtfy-whinging - bgkarma, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1It's really a shame this great show was on Fox at all, and yes, got the typical Fox treatment as so many shows received before it. On HBO or Showtime, maybe we would've seen better "results" and a larger fanbase, none of which, anyway, take away from the actual quality of the work.
I am not trying to kiss anyone's ass here, but I do believe Whedon reaches levels of genius in storytelling, and does so often. I challenge anyone who says differently that maybe they're not REALLY watching. Not really watching is what creates Under-Hype. - TheMadPoet, on 08/23/2009, -0/+1You still don't get it, do you? Bing will catch up! That's what MS does! It's *all* MS does! You can't stop them! Bing will wait for you! It will reach down Google's throat and tear her *****' heart out!
- JohnSCothill, on 09/30/2009, -0/+1Get your Google Wave from eBay! http://digg.com/business_finance/Get_Your_Google_W ... :-D
- NamesTwister, on 06/14/2009, -2/+2Where is the digg to infinity button?
- basickly, on 06/15/2009, -0/+0Was I wrong?
No, I wasn't wrong.
So... - ghinwachannel, on 06/15/2009, -1/+1waww...very nice!!! questions and answers.
- ace429k, on 06/14/2009, -2/+2I'll dig to that.
- Johnbinarystar, on 06/14/2009, -5/+4Beyond goofing off and acting like 12 year olds in chat, I don't see any real world use for this.
- DeanMix1234, on 06/15/2009, -2/+1I got that..and you can do something like that and MORE with Trillian Astra for example.. http://www.trillianastra.com/learn/tour-interop.ht ...
I do agree with you that "Nothing it is doing is remarkable in itself (well some of the AJAX is)," but again...Trillian does a much better job.. - DeanMix1234, on 06/15/2009, -2/+1speak for yourself when you say everyone else..I've seen tonnes of comments by people on the web who thinks otherwise..Maybe you are just over enthusiastic...
- BruceLynch, on 06/14/2009, -3/+2Google Wave will establish an improved environment for Communication. Not important to us as users now. It is important to developers who provide Communication services.
