- demitri, on 06/29/2009, -1/+24Can't wait to get in on Google Voice!
- pika2000, on 06/29/2009, -1/+20Now it would be more awesome if google add:
1. Virtual Fax capability. Somebody can fax to you using your google voice number, and the fax will be transcribed/sent to you via email attachment as a text/pdf document. Ability to fax over IP would be even better.
2. Google voice native app for iPhone/iPod Touch. - brianpeiris, on 06/29/2009, -2/+17Hello, did you know that your phone calls and Internet communications *already* go through a large telecom organization?
If you're still not paranoid enough, I've got a conspiracy theory involving reptilians that you might be interested in. - BigTonyT, on 06/29/2009, -0/+14Personal Cell Number
Company Cell Number
Office Number
Home Office Number
etc....
People that travel on business will love this feature in Google Voice.. I've been using it for about 18 months now (formerly known as GrandCentral), and I give people only my Google Voice number now.. - avalanche123, on 06/29/2009, -2/+14I love google
- Azriel7, on 06/29/2009, -0/+11Here is my list I want added:
*google talk/VOIP - this seems like no brainier and hopefully google is integrating google talk with google voice (instant skype killer).
*Multiple numbers to one account - Sometimes people move and go to a new area code, the current GV number will not do any good since it will be long distance. However if you change your GV number, it defeats the purpose of having a gv number. The best solution would be to keep your original GV number that will still work, but also have a new number added if you move. This should also apply to porting phone numbers, I have a phone number that I have had most of my life that people still call, but I have gotten people used to calling my gv number. I would like to port my number(s) to GV and just have it forward to the new number.
*Note taking - it would be nice if you could call your GV number and hit 4 to take voice notes.
*Record outgoing calls - You can only record incoming calls, we need the option to record outgoing calls as well.
*Transcribe everything option - so far, transcribe only works for voice messages received. It would be nice if we could transcribe recordings we make also.
*Virtual fax machine to receive and transmit faxes - GregJ, on 06/29/2009, -1/+11It does that now. You initiate the call from Google Voice and the caller id of the person you are calling will show your Google Voice number.
- chewbacca77, on 06/29/2009, -1/+11How many email addresses do you have?
- jimbohawkins, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9Plus, who really wants to put out their personal numbers into the public. With Google Voice, you can publish a number and people can call it and you just route them all to voicemail...
- diggwut, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8Google does it again.
- foltaggio, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8I kinda wish they haven't taken away my invites about two years ago, I could really send some out now. (everyone lost their invites)
- darkmyst, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7This is indeed possible already, even though it's not as seemless as it is with Android. Currently when someone sends an SMS to your Google Voice number, Google forwards it to you from one of their Google Voice numbers. This lets you reply to the SMS directly from a normal phone and it'll be routed back to the original person. I've discovered two interesting things: 1) instead of replying via SMS you can call the number google used to forward it and the voice call will also be automatically routed to the person who sent you to the SMS. I originally assumed that these numbers were used for temporary forwarding and at some point the forwarding functionality would expire, but that doesn't seem to be the case. That leads me to 2) The number google assigns your friends when they SMS you appears to be at least semi-permanent. I've been calling my friends using this number instead of their real number for months without any problems. Whether using SMS or making voice calls, when using this number my activites always show up on their end as my Google Voice number.
There are at least 2 big downsides to this method for normal phones. The first is you have to _receive_ an SMS from a person in order to get the special Google number you can then use to contact them at. Because this doesn't seem to be an official feature, there doesn't seem to be any other way to get such a number so you gotta force your friends to SMS you at Google Voice and you can't do anything about numbers that can't SMS. The second downside is that because this is really an exploitation of the way Google Voice does SMS and not an intentional feature, they could change the way the SMS feature works at any time and break this method. It's worked for me since SMS functionality launched on day 1 without problems, though, so it's useful in a hacky way. - makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+7And Android.
- cawpin, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5That's because the midwest actually speaks English.
- cawpin, on 06/29/2009, -2/+7WTF? It's EXACTLY what you're talking about.
- cheddaro, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5How many phone numbers do people have? Why would you have more than 1 phone number these days to begin with?
Really like some of these other features of Google voice though, like being able to record your call mid-call... - akchrs, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5Me too.
Home phone
2 office lines public/private
home cell
office cell - cawpin, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4Fax is one of the things that I hope they do add. another is having multiple numbers, or an 800 number. I'd be willing to pay for the latter.
- deslock, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4You didn't rtfa did you.
Combine all your phone numbers across all carriers into one "central" phone number. No PBX can take my tmobile number, my wife's cell, my work desk number, my work cell... and automatically route it to the right place at the right time.
Want a rule that knows when you are in office at your desk and forward all business callers (but not your friends) to your desk phone? No problem.
What to transfer an in-progress phone call on your personal cell to another phone (a conference room polycom) without interrupting the call? No problem.
Tired of listening to voice mail messages and rather read them via email? No problem. - oldhick, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5I'm already using it... If this old man can get an invite and be using it already, well then it can't be that hard!
- diggapleeeze, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4Work and cell. Sometimes, when meeting someone new, I don't want to give out either one. Now I could give them a GV number and not my actual numbers.
- hmiles619, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Please come out soon. I've been waiting all year for this.
- Cmain, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Some more info on GV Mobile can be found on the author's website: http://www.seankovacs.com/index.php/2009/05/gv-mob ...
There is another app called VoiceCentral which is supposed to be pretty good. - Macskeeball, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3From your comment, I'm not sure if you've heard of Asterisk. I've not used it myself, but it's open-source PBX software for free, and seems to be pretty well known.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -1/+4Hopefully this is the first step towards knocking wireless providers like AT&T and Verizon down a peg and a few years from now we are no longer paying for minutes or SMS, just access to their data networks.
- jfreeman, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Voice to text? I can't wait to see what it does with drunk dials.
- RobotBuddha, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3I can't believe how quietly that went down and for how long. Someone asked me for an invite about a year ago, and at that point I still hadn't noticed that they'd been removed.
- Cmain, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3@digga and @isuisorisuaint:
Both of those can be done to some extent. When someone sends an SMS to your GV number and it is forwarded to your cell, it has a different 406 number every time. The person sending the SMS name is listed before the message(ex. From: 406-723-1234 John Doe: Hello). When you reply to that number it will forward your message through your GV account to the other persons number, showing the message as coming from your GV number and not your cell. As far as calling goes, if you call your GV number from one of the numbers attached to your account, it will allow you to initiate a call. The only downside is that you must have the number you want to call memorized. If you have an iPhone, gvmobile eliminates this and integrates with your contacts. - GreatSunJester, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Even if incoming calls are 'free', they are still incoming from another network. So if your phone plan has a specific amount of minutes per month, are you burning them up with all these unified calls? This could be a major windfall for Nickel & Dime charging companies like Verizon.
- makario, on 09/03/2009, -1/+3I really don't find your sarcasm funny.
- garyploski, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Same here. If I could use the mobile number I've had for nearly 10 years in Google Voice... That would make things interesting.
- Sid0101, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2I signed up for GrandCentral as soon as an article about Google buying GrandCentral made it to Digg. Now I am a happy camper. If any of you guys use Windows Mobile 6 and higher, there are some Dialers and applications that are taking advantage of the Google Voice accounts on our WM Phones (I have Samsung i900).... There is another world to Google Voice that is not even covered in this article nor any other main stream blog. Applications like iDialer an One Touch Solutions are making Google Voice even a more powerful tool. Look it up on XDA.
- waltpsu, on 06/29/2009, -1/+3I have a Google Voice account/number. I've been in since Grand Central. Don't use it at all.
- randal2k, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2I have been using this since it was "Grandcentral". Needless to say, I only have one number, my google voice number. Nobody needs anything else. While i have 2 phones, nobody has those digets.
the text on voicemail, not that great, although one can get the gist of the call. The ability for google to call my cell, homephone or (yes!!) Gizmo number!!! "To forward your Google Voice calls to a Gizmo number, first you need to identify your Gizmo SIP number...",allowing me to use my laptop instead of a phone while on wifi around. Also, I can set recordings for blocked/private/unknown numbers... Like "Your number is coming through as Private. While i respect your privacy, please respect mine. This call will not go to voicemail, it will be dropped.. please call again with an unblocked Caller ID number. thank you. *click*"
It's not for everyone, but i am sure most people will find a good use in it and it's free... what more do you want? it to work with android wifi instead of having a cell provider... k, i agree there. - JohnCrock, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2I have been using my Google Voice account for a few months now and it is pretty cool. I love the transcribed Voicemails and the flexibility of setting any phone with my number is useful.
Wireless carriers are going to put up a fight soon because you can forward any call through Google Voice and so if you add that number to your MyFaves or other calling circle account, calls from anyone come across like they are coming from a single number. - diggapleeeze, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Thanks Cmain, that helps. But can you clarify the iphone integration a bit more?
- pw378, on 06/30/2009, -1/+3Yeah, much better to trust AT&T... Its not like AT&T would help the Government spy on your calls without a warrant or anything </s>
Seriously, Google has been a much stronger advocate for privacy than any company I can recall, ever.
I believe Google would challenge Gov't efforts to get my info more than any other telco out there. - deslock, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Android integration that would know your location and could figure out routing like knowing when you are away from office, in a conference room, in a meeting, etc. etc.
Awesome!!! - Boracho, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1http://lifehacker.com/5201353/google-voice-for-iph ...
- bbliss17, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1I just wish they would release it already. I have heard so much about this and I just want it already.
- diggapleeeze, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1So what happens when you initiate a call from your cell phone? How does your GV number appear on their caller id instead of your cell phone number? I think that's what isuisorisuant is talking about.
Same with SMS. If someone texts your GV number which is then sent to your cell phone, when you text back, what number is it coming from to them? Does it come from your GV number or from your actual cell phone number? - andrejhoward, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1In 15 years these guys will be as hated as microsoft ...
Remember you said this. - RobotBuddha, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2I'm going to be curious to find how accents work out with the voice transcriptions. So far the only person I know who's caused it any trouble has a very thick texan accent. But people with very strong midwestern ones are proving no trouble at all for it.
- my10cent, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1well go sign up for a invite, they are letting you do that now.
- ZutroyZuuts, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1I've had so many cell phone numbers, so many office numbers, so many home numbers.
If anyone were to ask me what my home, office, cell number was, I seriously could not tell them.
I can, however, remember one number that has never changed for the last 3 years and never will. This is my favourite feature of Google Voice, though most of you would think it incidental. - bbliss17, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1It like having one phone number so if you had 10 friends in those faves it changes nothing cuz you are talking to them for free all the time regardless.
Did I miss what you were trying to say? - scarolan, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1I just got my number, looking forward to using it. Google allows the numbers to be transferable, so I'm not too worried about them holding my number captive after I've given it to all my friends and family.
- randal2k, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1GV will be free... about the only difference.
Also, gives people a choice, youmail for some GV for others. :) - randal2k, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Add your google number to your friends and family/like plan, free there... since you can call your GV number to make calls. 2nd, If there are charges for incoming calls, then this might not be what you want. I don't get charged, but then again, i use criket. :)
I know this didn't answer your whole question. sorry for that. - oo7evan, on 06/29/2009, -2/+2lots of these features already exist.
