- inactive, on 04/21/2008, -5/+50don't understand why they still run their video player after the acquisition of youtube?
- cr3ative, on 04/21/2008, -3/+39Yay, useless blogspam!
http://video.google.com - Steinr, on 04/21/2008, -0/+23I believe that google video is supposed to be a search engine for all things video, whereas youtube is to share videos.
- bromac, on 04/21/2008, -0/+15It's common practice for companies to maintain brand identities even when they have two separate entities providing the same service. This way, they keep users loyal to both brands. At some point though they'll slowly start merging the services, but not so fast as they lose users or brand awareness.
- maninalift, on 04/21/2008, -0/+15Google video is sort of a search engine for video - it is fairly limited in the sites it covers and it also contains it's own content. In general it is a more sober place than YouTube, the place to find TechTalks etc. The comments on YouTube have to be the absolute sump of human civilization, a soup made from the bones of the lowest common denominator.
- jggube, on 04/21/2008, -1/+14Google doesn't seem to drop projects -- they just either put it on hold or just don't promote it. LIke MeasureMap -- they just stopped offering new accounts: http://www.measuremap.com/ because Google Analytics does much of the same features.
- smackjack, on 04/21/2008, -0/+8i always kind of preferred Google Video to youtube. It's a great place to find documentaries and not nearly as many stupid people leaving ridiculous comments
- ross., on 04/21/2008, -0/+6And they still won't let me go fullscreen without loading the whole page again!
- WomensUnderwear, on 04/21/2008, -0/+6There are distinctions. Google Video offers higher quality and longer running times than YouTube.
- Thorpe, on 04/21/2008, -0/+6I remember them once stating Google Video will continue to run as its own service - even if YouTube becomes the dominant player. Now, they seem to make it a search engine of other websites, which works quite good.
- stutimandal, on 04/21/2008, -0/+5Google video is n-times better than any other video player around.
1) It allows you to choose double-size, original size, smoothing, non-smoothing options.
2) It allows you to download videos in many cases. And you get an mp4 file.
3) It allows you to bookmark portions in between. For example, in a 1 hr video, if you want to jump to 38:33min, you can set a bookmark.
4) It is a rare video site which allows long videos (1 hr, 2 hr, you name it) to be kept online in one file. Veoh forces you to download their program. Youtube doesn't has such a service. Stage6 got shut down.
It is easy to bash GVideo in front of youtube, but the truth is that GVideo is n-times superior in terms of usability. The reason GVideo didn't fly was because Youtube does not screens copyrighted content actively.
(Hint: This video has been removed due to terms and condition violation.) - PayneX, on 04/21/2008, -2/+7Works quite well.
- PocketWatch, on 04/21/2008, -0/+5Ever heard of Google Answers?
http://answers.google.com - Thorpe, on 04/21/2008, -0/+4YouTube was recently re-designed.
- inactive, on 04/21/2008, -1/+4I still love video.google.com just because of the sort by duration... wish they would add that too youtube (unless i've just never seen it).
example: http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=george+carli ... bam... instant 20+ minute clips.. - Charun, on 04/21/2008, -0/+3"Google Video has given itself a redesign"
It has become both self-aware and self-conscious. - Steinr, on 04/21/2008, -1/+4I believe that google video is supposed to be a search engine for all things video, whereas youtube is to share videos.
- heretik, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2I like GV, It's much easy er to find full documentaries, it gives good recommendations based on what I've watched before, ther's less useless clutter on the page and more relevant information. Plus it searches all the other video sites anyways.
- jggube, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2MUCH needed. I just don't like how Google Video looks and functions, this makes it look much nicer, and contain more information about the video, as well as the paging navigation at the top makes it easier for browsing.
- movd, on 04/21/2008, -1/+3and tons of illegal movies and skate videos!
- MrViklund, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1I don't get it. Didn't they kill Google Video a while ago? It was reported in the news big way.
- WomensUnderwear, on 04/21/2008, -2/+3start up your laptop dude that's your reflection
- RussellDovey, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Just torrent rifftrax. You will thank me, sir.
- ceris, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1OK So it looks nicer but what I would like to see is the ability to watch a full MST3K without the damn thing stopping.. grumble..
- KaivenTor, on 04/21/2008, -1/+2So, that is a fresh new look? Reminds me mostly of how it looked before, I think they just moved stuff around and added a YouTube embed.
- naisanza, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1it's because it is associated with your google account and not to your youtube account. unless they create a feature that integrates the both.
- HealthyElijah, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Did anyone else catch that clicking the share button in Gvideo allows you to email and other stuff but most importantly, allows you to add it to the "My Shared Stuff" page. So now I don't have to make a new blog entry for all that cool stuff I want to make public and I can just add it to the shared stuff page!
I love it! - YodaJones, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1I'm sure that the "featured on AOL" footer has nothing to do with the Microsoft Yahoo deal or the Google Yahoo ad deal making Yahoo more attractive to Time Warner.
- Witchbaby, on 04/21/2008, -1/+2hahaha. i was being sarcastic and stumbled upon a goldmine!
- inactive, on 04/21/2008, -1/+2The problem is that Google Video has taken off the view counts on all their videos.... it's such a horrible site.
They should really just allow hours of video to be uploaded to YouTube, and then get rid of Google Video. I really can't understand why they don't allow longer videos on YouTube. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Lol, what an awful shameless plug.
- HealthyElijah, on 04/21/2008, -1/+2I think the quality has recently been upped on Youtube.
- valentino42, on 04/21/2008, -0/+0...or pay the few bucks to download some rifftrax legally. It's not even like they are expensive. Support Mike Nelson!
- PabloMac, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1Thanks! I'll send that link to three people, then they will send it to three people...
- airj1012, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1Why? Google owns YouTube, whats the point of google video?
- Morality, on 04/21/2008, -3/+3So youtube is like digg.
- Thrilltone, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1Hate it. Too small.
It used to be almost as large as http://thrilltone.com
(don't like fullscreen either) - seandfeeney, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1Can anyone tell me why they still mess with googlevideo? Seems like a waste of time, effort and resources.
But, who am I to talk they did just have one of the biggest single day jumps in the stock market. - Witchbaby, on 04/21/2008, -4/+3Until they allow filthy porn, I'm no fan of Youtube.
- alexkball, on 04/21/2008, -1/+0This is like buying a new convertible to replace your gremlin, but then deciding to keep the gremlin around, then spending money fixing up the car you had originally meant to get rid of.
- mfingers, on 04/21/2008, -1/+0I don't understand the need for google video when there is already youtube from google? can't they just focus on one? that will bring more inovation to youtube I believe.
- Zandarrr, on 04/21/2008, -3/+1It's about time. Google video was a real eye sore and navigating it was pain.
"don't understand why they still run their video player after the acquisition of youtube?"
Agreed. - notrub225, on 04/21/2008, -2/+0uh pornotube
- inactive, on 04/21/2008, -4/+1redesigned ≠ beefed up
- Acronym, on 04/21/2008, -3/+0is it still blocked in china? or was that youtube
- SomeImagination, on 04/21/2008, -4/+1Google should just transfer all the videos over to Youtube and redirect all video.google.com requests to youtube.com
- inactive, on 04/21/2008, -8/+4Why don't they just beef up youtube?
- simplistics06, on 04/21/2008, -8/+2it still looks like gay
- GIACOMOSAN, on 04/21/2008, -8/+1Quoting a great woman in our american history: 'That's hot'
