- hehdot, on 10/10/2007, -6/+41Who the hell uses Orkut anyway.
- jaredvolkl, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24This has HUGE implications. I'll be waiting, Google.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21looks like Google wants to faceplant facebook
- AntBing, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20You should have paid more attention in English class.
- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Just like Facebook couldn't defeat MySpace 2 years ago, right?
- Mononuclear, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16about 75% of Brazil's population
- willemmulder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12your autosummarize-articles-and-post-to-digg-script doesn't work yet the full 100%...
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I wish Google had a /good/ social network.
But then again, I guess Facebook and digg are all I need now, especially since the upgrade. - bradbelan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12I like it when Google uses their weight to push for things being open to keep the likes of Microsoft and Facebook from locking people in too much.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Oh, ye of little faith
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I have an account. I just think it needs better integration with Google's other services and a better branding.
- psilanthropist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6what ?
- Barbega, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I know im leaving facebook once this happens... but please no sodding vampires google!
- macewan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I wondering how the Google Share bookmarklet may fit in if at all.
- PinkoComrade, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Who spilt the beans?
- jpopesku, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Interesting date choice: I guess they want us to "remember, remember the 5th of November..."
- willemmulder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6but it can.
- vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -1/+5More people than Facebook (Its one of Brazils and Indias most popular websites - thats a LOT of people).
- Dohko_Xar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Implementing all of Google's services into one social network is unbelievably powerful!
- bitspace, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I have an orkut account, have for years, but I don't currently use it. However, google has the good marketing sense to turn it into something people will want to use. The point of this article is that they're not going to just rely on orkut to compete with facebook, but use it as a piece of the bigger product, underlying which is google's already overwhelming data infrastructure.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dude, you know you got it right when your startup becomes an 'issue' to Google Inc.
FTA: "Yesterday a select group of fifteen or so industry luminaries attended a highly confidential meeting at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View to discuss the company’s upcoming plans to address the “Facebook issue.”" - Sushubh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2recent update to orkut actually implemented some facebook like features. they are worried definitely. especially with microsoft providing them advertisements till 2011 i believe.
- Sushubh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3as per alexa it was more popular than even google.co.in
- stephdau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I thought Brazil was their largest market, but India does beat them population-wise.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Oh no you di-in't
- Quiplash, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2To be more specific, Brazilian teenagers.
- cave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It's not that it's dead, it's that it was taken over by the Brazilians.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Integrating their services is would what be good. The social aspects are boring for two reasons - it's all been done and Google doesn't have anywhere near enough users outside of search to make the data interesting.
- KungFuJesus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2wtf is a data basis
do you mean a database? - Sushubh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1no privacy means i am sticking with facebook. though i had reconsider if facebook messes itself up with more advertising.
- willemmulder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I invented that word for the purpose... (didn't know if it existed anyway) I ment they don't have to start from zero, but already have a huge amount of users. That's a great advantage. How would you call it? (just curious)
- PDG1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yes... I plan on going google
as long as google offers the better dealio
I'm not going to stick with something just because of the user base
doesn't mean I'll throw my facebook account out... right now I use Facebook more than Myspace... but I still have a myspace account and a hi5 account and millions of other accounts I probably don't use or remember.
In the end I'm still going to use it - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -1/+2Orkut is bigger than Facebook in terms of users (maybe not so in the US, but there are other countries on Earth). So, actually, they do.
- Sushubh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2rumors say that they refused the rumored offer.
- Sushubh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1facebook is getting more popular in india... :) most of my friends have moved to facebook from orkut.
- emot1con, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I was working for the biggest web analytics company when Google bought Urchin (now Google analytics). That was a scary day for us.
- PDG1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1well... you do know that one of their policies is to "not be evil"... right?
- canthraxp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2That image is slightly disturbing.
- hitwill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I honestly don't see what power there is in google's services. Orkut is nowhere near as useful in terms of features as facebook. And nowhere near as big, either. Perhaps opening up gmail's features as an api could let it be inco-orporated into facebook.
Other than that, anyone see other implications? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Yeah...THAT'S what they are doing! Riiiiight.
- Poi159, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Man the Indians are going look forward to this. Facebook is like popular in North America and Europe. Ortkut is big in India. All my Indian students use it here.
- ps3udov3ctor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I read in a Digg story once that said orkut was big in Brazil.
- jessechan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Competition is good, but what happens when there is a data breach in Google or Facebook? http://fishtrain.com/2007/08/25/what-is-a-social-g ...
- bovox, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3You cannot defeat Facebook or MySpace by "out-geeking" them. No one other than other geeks care about how superior your social network is on a technical level. What they care about is the "coolness" of your application--and coolness is determined by your set of friends. MySpace thrived through word-of-mouth in the club scene. Facebook thrived through the dorm rooms of college campuses. The only way a Google social network can thrive is through the same way. If I were to advise Google on their social network, I would tell them to start by targetting the 18-25 year old "cool" demographic, not the pocket-protector wearing demographic.
- FreakyT, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3I don't see why you all are modding xruntime down; he makes a valid point. I mean, do any of you actually use (or even plan to use) Orkut (Google's social networking site)?
- Debabrataa, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Looking forward for the next big thing !
- dennisplucinik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Why do you all suck at commenting. Orkut happens to be huge in other countries like India which is actually huge. Have you noticed that since Facebook opened up, there are a lot of new members from the middle east and India?
- Quiplash, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Leveraged off iGoogle and... ORKUT?!?
ROTFLMAO!
As far as I'm concerned Orkut is dead and buried... good luck with that one, Google Inc. - m4ni4c, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0taking over one step at a time ...
