- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Tomorrow??? That's today!
- liquidizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16You can give it a long list of websites to search, and have those results used exclusively or prioritised over the rest of Google's index. You can integrate the search engine easily (including changes to look and feel) within your own site. You can allow others to work with you on editing the list of sites used. You can specify keywords that are used to fine tune search results. It's much more sophisticated than the old 'search your site' widget Google offered (and still offers).
- b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14aargh, digg users do not take kindly to comment spam...
it's even worse if you somehow try and make it seem relevant to the article... - haxr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13so now i can have:
bittorrent google
porn google - scotsman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Hasn't the ability to search a particular website been around for ages? I've def used it before. How does this differ?
- happyyellowbug, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10 WHAT!? Is this really true? I can't wait!
- liquidizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Do people not know how to read the article and extensive comments explaining the difference?
- tzmguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4%searchstring% -.ru
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it does - however this lets you roll more than one site into the search.
For instance, you could roll wikipedia, and wiktionary into a search. Then when you want the meaning of a word, you can just go to your wiki search and presto!
It's more powerful than it seams.
I work for a large website, that spans a few subdomains, with this, we can roll search into one box, and not hammer our servers :) - underrun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@alen3k
You should change your keyboard layout I think. - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes it is today.
Here is the direct link: http://google.com/coop/cse/ - Prelude76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3read the F*'ning article before posting useless comments.
Its a lot different than site:site.com searching. You can make your own custom search engine across whatever domains you and your contributors specify, and if you embed it into your site, google even shares AdSense revenue with you. - sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now that they have included Custom Search for web-search, I wish they would include Custom Search for Google Books. To provide the ability for a user to only search a pre-selected list of books.
Would definitely improve my research, using the books I frequently search, that have no index (or with a very poor index). - fofr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now that it is out I have started a "wiki" only search engine, for finding facts fast and information that goes into more depth that wikipedia naturally does:
It's here: http://google.com/coop/cse?cx=006775555251158006122%3Anxp0gaipa40
And is open for volunteers to contribute to. - Pushkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3VERY cool google....
Works very well to limit searches to my site and to other RELEVANT sites - much better than the site:mysite - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Goodbye rolio.com and friends!
- olegk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5what's so great about that?
It was possible to do searches on specific sites since forever. For instance,
wii site:digg.com - darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@HMTKSteve
Ever tried looking at other comments before saying the same thing someone else did? I mean, come on. It's not nearly as hard as reading the actual article (something I have no doubt, based on your obvious attention to detail, that you do for every article you comment on). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...I mean rollyo.com
- Prelude76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2looks like SOMEONE is trying to get rich quick with AdSense. ;)
keep discussion to the topic instead of trying to draw attention to your site. - bs3arch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, I am discussing the topic. It took about 20 minutes to implement the search tech and embed it into the results page.
Now the index is at about 25 blogs I've manually entered, and I'm hoping to have about 1,000 in the index by the end of the day.
Hoping it will make an interesting case study :) - bs3arch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because it's not in the custom index, you have to join the Google Co-op to add it :)
Can't just allow the entire Google Index to be served. - psilanthropist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1also a fond farewell to torrentz.com. Now i can add all the torrent sites i want instead of just what they picked.
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh yeah? What about a Linux ATI search engine?
http://google.com/coop/cse?cx=002399777627873139089%3A7cbimqymzse - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, bye bye rollyo.
I imagine it will act the same way, allowing you to add more than one site to search through. If that's the case, it will be very different than using site:* query. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just want my searches to NOT include *.ru
Is that too much to ask? - neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check the examples under 'Excavator': http://www.google.com/coop/cse/examples/
http://www.winexcavator.com/SearchResults.aspx?q=IE7+problems - bertsisterwanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Look at Bert Search
http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=013075697214312439323%3Auxod0pkt_jm - tainedhero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I wonder who the first idiot to make a custom google search engine for linux will be?
For those of you who think that would be a GREAT idea.
http://www.google.com/linux - chadell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google is upping the ante against http://www.swicki.eurekster.com, the social search engine.
- jakv5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One just for skiers:
Gskier.com - jamesdwi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can find my solaris/opensolaris related search here http://unixconsult.org/solaris it has over 60 sites included in the search results.
- Renshep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I would really like for something like this to be killer, is the ability to combine other search tools. Such as the ability to combine a 'google images' with a 'flickr tags' search. Or the ability to set up a personal search that searches password protected sites to which you have access.
- jcs_goog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here are two Disney-focused search engines that use Google CSE. Good stuff..
http://www.searchdisney.com/
http://www.thedisneyportal.com/tdp/portal.asp - Prelude76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1an interesiting 'case study' while your adsense ticker starts ticking? ;)
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What google really needs is to be able to mark off certain websites from displaying in the results.
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice way to add a search engine to your site. If only I could figure out why the hell my site doesn't show up in the search even when I type the name of it in...
- didicole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sounds web 2.0. Google provides the technology, and the webmaster or blogger actually submit and create content for the search engine to craw and search. In this way, it gets users to evaluate website content on the first place. It a good way to creat vertical search later..
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@dark,
You got me looking... Unless I have that person on ignore, I do not see my comment duplicated... - IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did add it. It still doesn't show up...
I'm never going to have a career as an SEO guy - sharonbetts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a great method to enable educational searches through google for elementary students.
- gsmithEIDW, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Would it not be just a whole lot easier for everybody if the standard ordinary google search could accept more than one "site:" filter?
- fixpert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Google is jumping on the Capote wagon -- it's hip right now to do things twice. I mean, I liked this idea when it was called "Rollyo" and had Dan Cederholm doing the visual design, but whatever, I guess there was that movie called Capote and then 6 months later they were like "hey, let's make that movie again and call it 'Infamous'".
Only thing that sucks is we'll have to look at Google's crap visual design. - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I thought Google already did this if you use something like "site:www.digg.com" followed by your search words???
- jobless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Whats new in this? This functiolnality has been around for a while in the form of LIVE macros. Am I missing something?
- calvey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I added one to my website after seeing this article ... pretty damn easy, took all of 15 minutes.
I'm going to post a link. I wouldn't consider this spamming, really, because I doubt anyone is going to be interested in the content of my website (homebrewing recipes).
So, if you care to see it in action, I put it in the footer section of my webpage ::: http://www.brew365.com - bs3arch, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Blog Search Engine is now powered by Google Custom Search : http://www.blogsearchengine.com
Insanely easy to implement and I'm building a very nice index of quality blogs for the 10,000 searches per day at BSE. - nato4, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2... guys google has already announced it
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2006/10/eureka-your-own-search-engine-has.html
6 hours ago. admittedly this was posted 7 hours 8 minutes ago, so he was in by 1 hour and 8 minutes. - alloneword, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Do people not know how to use:
